The ornamental fish sector is a widespread and global component of international trade, fisheries, aquaculture and development. Marine ornamental fishes are one of the most popular attractions world-wide. The marine ornamental fish has increased a thrust among aquarists due to their multitudinous color and gorgeousness. The marine ornamental fish trade is a rapidly growing sector that relies almost exclusively on the collection of these animals from coral reef ecosystem.
In Taiwan, about 260 ornamental fish farms—mostly in southern Taiwan—producing over 300 species, including medium and high-priced varieties such as bloody parrot as well as American and African cichlids. Output value of Taiwan’s ornamental fish grew from NT$830 million (US$25.1 million) in 2009 to nearly NT$1.2 billion (US$40.3 million) in 2013. [40]
