Assalamualaikum and good evening to my lecturer Sir Shamsul Rizal, lecturer at University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) who teach me in Maritime English (MMM3001) subject also known as ME. I am Muhammad bin Ismail. Now, I want to discuss my assignment titled “in what ways do the knowledge and proficiency in Maritime English can help my studies at UMT”, but before that let me explain what is actually Maritime English. “Maritime English is the entirety of all those means of the English language which, being used as a device for communication within the international maritime community, contribute to the safety of navigation and the facilitation of the seaborne

As we know, the course that we take is course that involves the maritime field. Therefore, ME lesson can help us recognize the maritime field further. First sub-point, I can recognize the types of ships. There are many different types of ships, and the differences are mostly based upon the type of cargo the ship transports. Most all ships have some basic things in common. The types of the commercial ships such as general cargo ships (sometimes called Breakbulk Carriers), bulk carriers, container ships, auto carriers, tankers, fishing vessel (fishing boats, processors and non-fishing processors), oil industry vessels, passenger ships, ferryboats and others. The second point is that I can recognize international maritime bodies such as International Maritime Organizations (IMO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations, International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG), Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), Port State Control (PSC) and others. Besides, in Malaysia, there are several maritime agencies such as Agensi Penguatkuasaan Maritim Malaysia (APMM), Kastam, Imigresen, Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) and others. My last point is that I can recognize the types of safety equipment on ship such as life jacket, life boat, life buoy, fire break out, fire extinguisher and others. When I know the safety equipment on board can indirectly improve my understanding of the safety not only on board but also everywhere I was. In conclusion on this paragraph, before this I did not have knowledge of information in the maritime field , after I learned ME I learned a little bit of information in the field of
INTRODUCTION The Cretaceous Period, spanning 65.5-146 million years ago (Mya), was a world different from what we are familiar with today. Planetary changes during this period included the extinction of dinosaurs and drastic global warming. The breakup of the super continent Pangea had started about 30 Mya, and seaways had begun to form and cover landmass that had once been a part of the super continent (Geologic Time). Today, scientists know that one of these landmasses, the North American continent as we now know it, was at one point covered by a vast inland sea known as the Western Interior Seaway.
In 1772,one more event occurred which cause trouble between the colonists and great Britain, Lieutenant William Duddington(the ship Gaspee) crew members will board the ship and expropriate(smuggling)packages. The shipowners will lose all there $$ and goods then hurt the merchants they have traded.
Cash inflow increases and ship owners experience an unexpected large gain in finances. They purchase second hand tonnage in an attempt to capitalize on the increased level of demand second hand markets increased the value of it and are willing to pay high prices for them to meet the needs of increasing trade. Shippers are now willing to commit to long term charter parties to lock in rates and secure vessels to ensure that their cargo is transported. The banking sector gets blindsided by the amount of money moving in the shipping market and they begin loosening their lending criteria, abandoning in part or in whole prudent and basic lending principles. They are also not considering security on these loans especially if they have before them evidence of long-term charter
Although slaves and women did not gain political representation, the Atlantic Revolution was successful because it increased social equality and rights for citizens. In document 2 the first article state “Men are born and remain free and equal rights” and article 6 state “It must be the same for all, whether it protects or punishes. All citizens, being equal in its eyes.” Not only did the second and six article states everyone equal. Overall the article are helping bring that social and give them new rights.
The Scotch-Irish people were one of the numerous immigrants who looked for shelter and alleviation in America. The Scotch-Irish appeared in the mid-seventeenth century when the English government, on edge to dominate Ireland, removed Lowland Scots as pilgrims to the province of Ulster in northern Ireland. For around a century the Scotch-Irish squeezed out a living in Ireland, yet in the early piece of the eighteenth century their monetary condition endured a progression of grievous inversions. As a result, a flood of maybe five thousand Scotch-Irish moved to America in 1717. Before the end of the eighteenth century, four more influxes of Scotch-Irish withdrew Ireland for America and a few hundred thousand Ulstermen settled in about each area of the English provinces.
The idea of the United States having Puritan origins is still alive today. In Sarah Vowell’s, The Wordy Shipmates, the topic of how a nation affiliates itself with Puritan perspectives is introduced. She encourages one to look beyond the surface information of the first English settlers’ motives in the 1600s, and to investigate what Puritan views truly are. She mentions the Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, John Winthrop, expressing his freedom to enforce his religious views on to a whole colony of people. The superiors of this religious group decided in the colonies what was appropriate for the society they are creating.
There are far far better things ahead than anything we leave behind. In 1802 I was told to set off on a journey west. To find the Northwest Passage. You will now hear my encounters and just imagine my journey. Now Luxuriant Bear grass was just one of the plants I discovered on my journey.
Elia Kazan’s 1954 film On the Waterfront is a crime drama starring legendary actor Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy, a former prize-fighting boxer turned dock worker employed by Johnny Friendly (portrayed by Lee J. Cobb), the corrupt leader of the local dock workers union. After witnessing the murder of a fellow co-worker and friend, Joey Doyle, Terry is faced with the difficult decision of speaking against Friendly, a long-time family friend and the boss of his older brother Charley, in court in relation to the mob-esque activities of the dockers union, or keeping his mouth shut in an effort to preserve the relationship, and also his own safety. Edie Doyle (portrayed by Eva Saint Marie), the sister of the deceased Joey Doyle, and the local Catholic priest Father Barry (a role performed by actor Karl Malden) make it their mission, along with the Waterfront Crime Commission, to encourage those to speak the truth against Friendly. Eventually, the Commission, Father Barry, and Edie zero in on Terry given that he was the only witness to the murder, and collectively act as the moral compass that tries to sway Terry into doing what is considered to be the just thing to do, even if that means going against family.

Ever since its incipience, the boat has been one of the greatest inventions to ever aid humanity. Two civilizations that were known for their nautical excellence were the Byzantine Empire in Eastern Europe and the Norse Vikings of Scandinavia. The Byzantine Empire has been described as a maritime empire by numerous historians (Miller), and the Norse Empire’s naval advancements were a major reason for its success (Hadingham). Both empires were known for their technological advancements in the field of ship
Vessels such as the Sloop, this 18th century ship a quite popular type of vessel. This one-masted ship can be built to be small or large, with a big triangular mainsail over connected to the fore and aft of the ship. My Dearest Parents, When you last heard from me, it was about two months when I first boarded the ship. The voyage was normal at first, the only discomfort being the number of passengers traveling with me. The reason for the overcrowding was due to the passengers hoping they can experience a new life for not only themselves, but also their family and friends. This was my intention too. After a couple of weeks at sea, there was a massive storm that threw the ship off course.
Pablo Neruda's choice of diction and literary devices combine to give off a very calm and soft tone. Neruda, throughout the piece conveys a sense of calmness using sounds and words such as: “sea”, “me”, and “waves . Each of these words fly off of the tongue with ease and grace, similar to how the seas waves are. Neruda creates the image of being near the sea by his diction by choosing words with smooth sounds such as: “me” ,”rose”, “foam”, and “vast”. These words create the soft sounds like what we would see at the sea and that was Neruda’s goal.
