The video, “The Importance of Being Inauthentic,” posted by the YouTube channel, TEDx Talks, on October 22, 2013, talks about the importance of being inauthentic. The speaker, Mark Bowden, is an expert in human behavior and body language. In the video, he gives a unique perspective on how being more inauthentic is beneficial. He started off by saying that humans are creatures that make presumptions about other people before getting to know them. He then introduced the audience to a part of the brain known as the “R-Complex”, or the primitive brain. This is the part of the brain that is responsible for how humans react to something by sending signals to the neocortex. Bowden later clarifies that essentially, humans have four categories of reactions: friend, predator, sexual partner, or indifferent. If the brain perceives someone as a friend, that person will appear to be more approachable. But if the brain perceives someone as a potential predator, it is more likely that the body will have a negative reaction to the other person. If someone is deemed to be a potential partner, then a desire to mate with the other person is …show more content…
Meaning that most people will not care what others think or say; words will just become background noises. So to counteract this, Bowden showed the audience how to be perceived as a friend. He demonstrated this by showing the importance of smiling, flashing the eyebrows, and opening up the body. By doing this, Bowden appeared to be more approachable and friendly. However, he does state that this charade can be seen as a form of manipulation. But he does counteract this by saying that if everyone is being “authentic”, then their ideas will not be heard as people are likely not to approach each other. So essentially, Bowden encourages people to appear more inauthentic to become more approachable as it is a great way to get people to listen to each
In using casual language, the writer makes the reader feel more comfortable, as if they were talking to a friend. Thus, this blatant use of persuasion assures readers of their stance and perhaps may prompt one who previously felt differently to change their viewpoint. This can be acutely alarming and will be discussed further in the immediate future. A highly controversial
In his essay Kwame uses this quote by Charles Taylor to explain what he thinks authenticity is, “There is a certain way of being that is [someone’s] way. [They are] called upon to live [their] life in this way.... If [they] are not [true to [themselves]], [they] miss the point of [their]
At the beginning of her speech, Amy addresses the ideas of what interactions we focus on and become more intrigued with. Through visuals, she shows how we become intrigued with others’ body language, awkward interactions, and how we see body language as significant, and this leads to overall how we judge ourselves and judge others. This is a strong use of the pathos appeal in that, people realize how much they have judged body language in the past which will lead them to think about their own body language in the future. They begin to realize the impact of this body language and how they can use their body language to fake something to later make it. She then provides an example that uses both ethos and logos appeals.
Argyle thought that a positive attitude and the feelings a close friendship has can be encouraged by the good and effective eye contact. He also found that non-verbal signals are just important and effective as verbal signals or communication.
One should see tenacity in the lines of the orators expressions. If an orator sounds like they do not believe in themself, why would anyone else? Daniel Rose supports this ideal with the Aristotle's pathos, meaning emotion. But one does not want the audience to fear them, they want the audience to trust them, to believe them. So an orator must remember to smile at the audience and make frequent eye contact, so they feel that that speaker is giving that message to them.
When getting to somebody, the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” really does hold true. In my life, I often come off as shy and reserved to someone who doesn’t know me. On the contrary, my friends describe me as a loudmouth who doesn’t stop asking unnecessary questions. As people I’ve known for some time, my friends know me for more than what first looks may tell. This theory is seen throughout society, far beyond the walls of John Jay High School.
Her Thesis statement is “How your body language shapes who you are”. Cuddy’s talk is wonderfully funny and lighthearted throughout, which is effective in tearing down the wall between speaker and audience. She shows humorous photos and videos of politicians caught in awkward non-verbal expressions, and she solicits smiles by showing cute photos of furry animals posed in high power and low power positions. 24) How did the speaker gain our Attention?
But, if it were a matter of comparison, there’s surely something significant that distinguishes human beings from animals. Many of the habitual mannerisms human’s posses are instinctual and have developed over time as mechanisms for survival. When humans are faced with obstacles, they display emotions and think accordingly to our surroundings. However, humans have an even more distinctive attribute; their ability
The second question with the problem with humans is “what are the innate predispositions of men?” (Becker, 1971, p. 116). The third question with the problem with humans is “what types of personality are most valued” (Becker, 1971, p. 116). The fourth question with the problem with humans is “what are the modes of relating to others” (Becker, 1971, p. 116).
Introduction Academic Integrity is an essential component of third level education because it is the fundamental building block in which we derive our professional ethics and integrity from. It sets a pattern for life long integrity in all areas of life. Our job as students is to construct knowledge honestly and fairly. A culture of honesty earns a great deal of respect. Integrity is fundamental to everything we do in college, I don’t think we can have genuine learning without integrity.
Integrity is a term used to describe a person 's level of honesty, moral commitments, and willingness to do what 's right. Choosing what is right over what is fun, fast or easy, and choosing to practice our values rather than simply professing them. Given the real definition of integrity, we recognize that it is actually extremely difficult to be in integrity 100% of the time. We aspire to be in integrity with what we believe but sometimes, we mess up. Sometimes, our emotions get the best of us and we are unable to manage our behavior and actions.
Eye contact also plays a vital role in effective communication. There are times when we experience words that come out of our mouth and the ways we communicate through our body language are totally different. In this kind of situation, the receiver has to determine whether to believe verbal or nonverbal message. Regularly the receiver would select the nonverbal as it is more natural and it truly displays the speaker’s true feeling and intention. The gestures such as the way we sit, how fast and how loud we talk and how much eye contact we make send strong messages to the receiver.
Honesty, Integrity, and Lies Synthesis Essay Though often times revealing the truth may cause more damage than good, it is only rarely true. Rather than achieving what is intended, all lies regardless of the size, create conflicts which in return result in irresolvable consequences like permanent distrust and an inability to sustain relationships. How would man live if he were only told lies and little truth?
The Mating Mind by Geoffrey Miller Throughout “The Mating Mind”, Geoffrey Miller offers an original insight into the evolution of the human mind. I believe that the utility of his theory is not only limited to giving us a possible explanation of the intriguing brain evolution, but it can also be a source of inspiration while designing and building intelligent machines. Since artificial intelligence aims at imitating human intelligence, knowing the circumstances and mechanisms that led to the development of the human brain should be beneficial for the development of machine intelligence.
Many of his examples feel outdated and people might not feel connected to it and take it personally. His philosophies of authentic examples feels really old because they are from people who lived long ago(1). The author should have given recent examples for the readers to understand and feel it more. People are close with authenticity. They want to feel passionate about it.
