Additionally, working with community partners to secure materials for the target group of students during the summer months would help narrow the achievement gap. In a 2010 study, “…providing easy access to self selected books for summer reading over successive years…limited summer reading setback” among economically disadvantaged students (Allington, McGill-Franzen, Camilli, Williams, Graff, Zeig, & Nowak,

Children who grow up in poverty are faced with a series of issues which impact their education and social atmosphere. In both the school and home setting these children lack the proper resources which they need to succeed academically. Across the country, people have begun creating programs which aim to help children in poverty succeed, despite their socioeconomic status. These programs range from after-school reading, tutoring services, charter schools, and free summer programs. All of these programs provide children with extra academic help which they may not be receiving in school or at home.

During Dr. Lauri Kirsch’s presentation, she discussed one of the professional development strategies where she conducted a simulation of students that have resources along with students that do not have resources. The professional development titled “Four Corners”, paired teachers together, rationing out supplies, and asking all the groups to produce the same outcome. This analogy resembles what students from impoverished areas face, daily. They are not as equipped as their counterparts yet they are asked to perform at the same
A classroom should be filled with a wide variety of languages, experiences, and cultural diversity. An effective teacher understands the importance of culturally responsive teaching, and recognizes the significance of including students ' cultural references in all aspects of learning. Having an enriching classroom that engages all students does not mean making judgments about a student’s culture based on their skin color, gender, or socioeconomic status, rather it means knowing each student in a way that is individualized. According to the authors of The First Day of School: How to be an Effective Teacher Harry Wong, race, gender, religion, financial statue, and skin color is the least important factor determining a student’s achievement. Moreover, demographics and culture are not an excuse for students’ lack of achievement.
“We don't really care about diversity all that much in America, even though we talk about it a great deal” (Brooks 331). Brooks says that we humans think about diversity more as a racial difference which is true, but it is not all about race, religion or ethnicity. Diversity is about any other things such as hobbies, professions, age. Anything that could make one group different from the other. “When we use the word "diversity" today we usually mean racial integration.
There is diversity around the world and especially in the United States, where people from different parts of the world come. Due to such diversity in America children need to be taught about diversity and the right way, and should start from young ages. Young children acquire information faster and that is when their minds are starting to evolve. To teach kids about diversity, there are many ways of doing it, and many exercises, books, activities to help with. Children from the early age need to study the alphabetic letters and recognize them in a sounds connecting them in words and sentences.
Over the past three decades’ educational leadership has been in search of ways to increase student literacy in urban middle schools in the southeast sections of the District of Columbia. The quest to closing achievement gaps in urban school districts have and will always be an on-going issue for educational leadership (Daly & Chrispells, 2008). Findings from research studies suggest that school leadership accounts for fully one quarter of total school effects on pupils, making it second only to classroom instruction among school-based factors affecting student achievement (Leithwood, Louis, Anderson & Wahlstrom, 2004). There are certain challenges that middle school principals face that pertain only to these middle school principals due to

Diversity may mean different things to different people. To me, diversity is exactly that, being different and unique. Diversity makes the world a beautiful place to be, and full of interesting and different people. The beauty of human civilization lies in its diverse groups and cultures.
Inner-city schools, located in poorer and violent parts of town, generally have a lower level of income than suburban schools. Inner city schools consist of schools in poorer areas. These schools often lack the necessary means to help their students achieve. Inner city schools, portray how wealth divides in America, leaving many African American children to go to school in old beaten down buildings. Inner city schools, which show years of wear, provide children with an unfair opportunity against suburban schools.

I can consider my professional development experience in two parts: Before I became a teacher and after I became a teacher. During my teacher education at university I used to imagine myself as the teacher of that lesson and I used to try to draw some tips for my future job. I observed my teachers’ way of teaching, their rapport with students and their reactions. I always commented on why or why not they behave in that specific way and search for examples to be applied in my future job as a teacher. I believe that these observations provided me with some valuable and conclusive clues for my job.
It is a complex concept as a whole. It is a multidimensional term with different perceptions in different organizations, societies and national cultures. One way it has been described is as "the composition of work units (work group, organization, occupation, establishment or firm) in terms of the cultural or demographic characteristics that are salient and symbolically meaningful in the relationships among group members" (DiTomaso, Post, & Parks-Yancy, 2007). But, at the same time as Ola Joesph says, “Diversity is not about how we differ. Diversity is about embracing one another’s
