My favorite holiday is not the usual beloved holiday. It doesn’t involve food or presents, instead it focuses on the moral compass. The holiday I chose was Martin Luther King Jr. day. Though many don’t consider January 16th a holiday, I see many reasons why it it should and is a very important holiday. MLK Jr day influenced schools around the nation to teach what he preached. It forces us to take a step back and look how different the world was back then compared to now, it also allows us to look at the poise and tranquil way he spoke and thought. It lastly shines a light on how the same culture he tried to free is, in it’s own way, still in chains. Though it doesn’t have weeks, or even days, in preparation it still has decades of history behind it that we as a nation can’t ignore. …show more content…
It’s amazing how a man during a very stressful time can stay poised, while a popular politician can’t keep his cool on Twitter. King showed how important it is when you’re a leader to keep your cool. Both back then and now, it’s very important for someone who is a very influential public figure to be able to reassure the nation that everything is okay. Even if everything's not okay, it’s then the public figures job to bolster the public that the nation will get through the situation eventually. King should be an inspiration to politicians everywhere. It’s important that even in the darkest times we can still act sophisticated. I’m grateful that King showed us that being elegant isn’t impossible. I hope by reading this you have realized just how much MLK Jr. ?Day has influenced me and others the years. Martin Luther King Jr. is a man that should be praised. It’s amazing how a man who has been dead for decades can affect us so deeply. I hope my reasons and explanations show why MLK Jr. Day should at least be in your top ten of favorite U.S. holidays. May you your January 16th be bright and full of
Martin Luther King philosophy was the best for America in the 1960s. In the 1960s there was a great civil rights. Two leaders emerge, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. I will discuss about the last photo with the children looking at bubbles. I believe that this image is a great photo. The emotional impact of this image makes this a great photo. Since MLK day was a few days ago this image really interested me.
One of the reasons I feel Booker T. Washington deserves a holiday, is because he was the first African American ever to have the honor of being invited to the White House and through his hard work he was able to reach the lives of many people. He became known for his relentless efforts to ensure that all Black Americans had an opportunity at education. Through his hard work in establishing the school he influenced many people, by giving them the opportunity they otherwise would have never had. Washington was also a promoter of hard work, believing that it was the only way around the seemingly unconquerable difficulties of even surviving in a white people ruled society.
Black History Month is an amazing month. It 's a month where incredible things have happened, many great people have done incredible things in this month. Black History month is based of many people, my favorite is Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a great man and he did many great things until unfortunately on April 4,1968 Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot and killed by a white racist man James Earl Ray was sentenced into 99 years in prison. James escaped prison and then was soon recaptured and added one more year to total of 100 years in prison.
The MLK unit showed me a lot about my interests and non interests. Although, the Emmett Till situation is what grabbed my attention. It was typical during the 1950 's for blacks to be killed, but what stood out the most is when his mother requested to have an open casket at his funeral. She wanted everyone to see what they had done to her 14-year old boy. Emmett 's case became representative of the disparity of justice for blacks in the South.
Does the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Successfully Honor Dr. King and His Values? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr had a dream - a dream that one day all men, women, and children will be treated equally, regardless of color, race, ethnicity, or economic background. The Martin Luther King Jr Memorial was made in order to commemorate Dr. King and his legacy in rising up and fighting for the civil rights movement in the United States, although it has been plagued with some construction and design flaws. In spite of the issues of the background and presentation of the monument, the success of the memorial in honoring Dr. King and his values can be identified using the memorial itself, comments from Park Ranger John McCaskill, an academic seminar
MLK went against all the norms of society, fighting against the extreme prejudice toward african-americans in the 1950’s and being the cornerstone for equal rights for all people, no matter their race or ethnicity. If it weren’t for
It is an honor to be here this morning to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's assassination. Dr. King was a Baptist minister and social activist who championed the advancement of civil rights through tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience. Fifty years ago, Dr. King arrived in Memphis Tennessee to support the sanitation workers strike. On April 3, 1968, he delivered his last sermon here in Memphis, Tennessee, entitled “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” at the Mason Temple Church of God in Christ and on the following day, Dr. King was assassinated.
“Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice” (King). This paragraph of his speech was very effective because it made some of the
It was a humid and damp day in August of 1963, hundreds of people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial. As the ground gathered the man responsible for this was getting ready to make the speech of his life. Martin Luther King Jr. took the podium on August 28th 1963 to addressed the real issue on civil rights. King proceeds to bring his family into the speech to hit people with their emotions. King was a genius man.
Martin Luther King Jr. A man who needs no intro. This great man has a national holiday celebrated on his birthday. He has a monument in Washington D.C. Which is also the first memorial to an African American opened to the public.
Martin Luther King Jr. helped us realize that segregation and poverty are wrong. He also helped us realize that we should treat people the same. No matter race, color, or gender. He has impacted our everyday lives with the Civil Rights Act and his “I Have a Dream…” speech. He is an important man with an important history.
To achieve this, he used rhetorical strategies such as appeal to pathos and repetition. His passionate tone flowed through these strategies, increasing their persuasive power on the people and encouraging them to follow/listen to his message on racial injustice. While pathos elicits an emotional response from the audience to make them more accepting of King’s ideas, repetition structures the speech and emphasizes key ideas for the audience to take away from listening. These two techniques played a crucial role in furthering his purpose and in provoking a powerful response from the audience that made this speech memorable and awe-inspiring. To this day, King’s speech remains one of the most famous and influential speeches in
But not only does he use emotion, he also uses fact to prove his statements and points. One of the most powerful facts in this speech was “this note was a promise to all men, yes, even black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed “ undeniable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” This fact is explaining how our founding fathers promised people of different color rights, but never received them, further proving King’s point. He also mentions the Emancipation Proclamation, a promise for freeing all slaves, issued by one of the greatest presidents this nation has ever had, Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln being one of the greatest protesters and civil rights activists of his time, wanted a better life for the citizens of America, he made a promise and he kept that promise and freed all slaves held in the United States.
Did Martin Luther King impact the American society? In the now days, all creatures have their rights even animals. Black Americans during 20th century did not have any of their rights. But Martin Luther King fought to regain everyone stolen rights.
