Antigone is a fictitious character in a play by the Greek writer Sophocles. She represents a rebellious heroine who defies Creon’s decree to not bury one of her brothers. She is following her familial and religious obligation that state that the dead should be buried. By doing so she is risking her own life. Martin Luther King Jr. was an African American civil rights leader from the 20th century. He opposed the government by looking for fair laws for all people regardless of race. By participating in protests and giving speeches for non-violent civil disobedience he risked his own freedom and ultimately his life. Both figures represent resistance to the government and defiance to certain laws that even though accepted by many, are deemed unjust
He exemplified moral courage and remained authentic to his cause even through the risk of physical assaults and imprisonment for speaking out against the government
Both Antigone and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. can be viewed as rebels. Despite strict laws being enforced by their governing bodies, each chose to challenge authority in favor of their moral compasses. By objecting to the laws set in place, both Dr. Martin Luther King and Antigone fought for what they felt was truly right and just in each of their given situations. Although each character’s circumstances and actions seem to differ greatly, Dr. King would agree with Antigone’s choices to question authority in order to uphold mutual respect and honor for all individuals, as well as religious values, despite the laws set in place. Religious beliefs were Antigone’s driving force in opposing the law of Creon.
He fought to make sure that African-Americans were not be born into a completely white dominated society and fought for true
Both Martin Luther King Jr. and Antigone carry out civil disobedience in order to fight against laws that they believe are unjust. However, Antigone does this in a lone wolf way, taking direct action against the laws, while Martin Luther King on the other hand uses power in numbers and peaceful protests to achieve his ends. I sympathize with Martin Luther King Jr. because he is fighting for the good of all of humanity, and because the methods as to which he achieves his ends are more effective. Martin Luther King Jr. is fighting for more than himself.
He was an advocate of nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience, which he believed were powerful tools to bring about social change. King believed in the power of peaceful protests, boycotts, and sit-ins to challenge unjust laws and practices. On the other hand, Antigone was a character who was willing to disobey the law to fulfill her moral obligations. Antigone was a strong-willed woman who believed in the importance of burying her brother Polyneices, even though King Creon had prohibited it. She was willing to face the consequences of her disobedience, including death, to honor her brother and do what she believed was right.
Antigone is the daughter Of Oedipus Rex, the old king. There are ways in this story that antigone is determined and also stubborn. Basically Antigone had a brother name Polynices and a brother named Eurydice and and Polynices died while fight his brother and at that time there was a king named Creon, he did not like Polynices but he did like Eurydice, so then Creon had a burial for Eurydice but not for Polynices, therefore he could not go to Heaven, so now creon made a law that said that no one could bury Polynices. When Antigone heard this she was disgusted therefore she said that she must bury her brother.
In the play "Antigone" by Sophocles, Antigone rightfully decides to bury her brother, Polynices, but when the king, Creon, finds out, she does not repent for her actions. She is a woman that stands for what she thinks is right, which in this case is that Creon is wrong for condemning the burial of her brother. She shows braveness with her actions because not all people have the courage to risk their own lives so that their brother can rest in peace. For instance, Ismene states "What? You 'd bury him – when a law forbids the city?"
In the play Antigone, Sophocles demonstrates the conflict between family and God through the characters of Antigone, Ismene and Creon. Antigone being ambitious and strong willed throughout the play, fights for his brothers honor and proper burial while Ismene on the other hand, is more timid fears the consequences that may occur if the laws are broken. For Creon he is the King and holds most power, until the Gods feel he is incapable. Antigone, Ismene and Creon all use logical and emotional appeals to achieve a compromise to either bury Polynices or not.
In conclusion, Antigone’s action towards Creon‘s Laws corresponds to the four steps of nonviolent campaign that Martin Luther King used to protest in Birmingham. In case of Antigone, an unjust law was passed in the city that restricted her right as a woman to bury her dead brother. She noticed the presence of injustice when, one of her brothers was given a proper burial over the other, which contradicted to the laws of the gods, and decided to break the law by burying her brother. For Martin Luther king, a segregation laws was passed that restricted blacks in Birmingham to vote. King saw such laws as unjust and protested against it.
In the classic play by Sophocles, Antigone is a tragic story of the bold Antigone who defied her uncle, King Creonʻs, edict by burying her brother, Polyneices, who died attacking the city of Thebes, trying to take the power away from their brother, Eteocles, who refused to share the throne with Polyneices. Even though Antigone knew that going against Creon and burying her brother would not end well for her, she still choose to risk her life to do what is right. After being caught breaking the law, Antigone is appointed to be locked away, isolated in a cave until she dies, but she hangs herself at the end. At the same time, things for Creon are not looking good, as everyone around him seems to be against him in his decision for punishing Antigone. Everyone Creon cares about kills themselves from a curse that is put on Creon for not following the Godsʻ laws.
Although both Antigone, from “Antigone” by Sophocles, and Martin Luther King Jr. from “Letter From A Birmingham Jail” engage in acts of civil disobedience and fight for what they believe to be right, the way they go about these acts is quite different. Each of their reasons, actions, and consequences can be seen as opposites. Antigone refuses the help or involvement of others, which can be seen as a selfish act directly against the king while Martin Luther King Jr. involves the entire community to help the greater good. Antigone is a character who stands up for what she believes in to a point of direct civil disobedience toward the king, Creon. She puts the laws of the gods over the laws of her authority.
The play, Antigone, is a tragedy written by the Greek poet Sophocles. A common theme among tragedies is that they have a tragic hero, and Antigone is no different. The tragic hero of this poem is Creon, the King of Thebes. Creon is faced with the difficult task of punishing his niece, Antigone. She has broken one of his laws stating that no one is to give proper burial rites to Polyneices, Antigone’s brother, because he tried to overthrow Creon.
Creon is the protagonist in Antigone, because his motivation throughout Antigone is the stability and wellbeing of Thebes. Moreover, Antigone is the antagonist in Antigone, because her motivation is selfish and deceiving. In Antigone the setting is Thebes post the death of both airs to the throne. Eteocles dies defending his country from his brother Polynieces which died attempting to reclaim his right to the throne. The conflict throughout Antigone is Antigone’s responsibility to bury her brother Polynices and the law created by Creon, the new king of Thebes, which states that “No one shall bury him, no one mourn for him.”
The search for justice is never ending. Justice may be delayed, denied, or postponed, however, the search is timeless. To be just is to argue for fair rights for all. It is to be someone that will help the people of the community. However, many times justice is not sought and not given to those who need it most.
Literary analysis essay Martin Luther King Jr. was the base of civil rights. Without him the civil rights movement might have never happened. He did not do it with violence but he did do it with peace. He inspired many other people to follow him and participate in peaceful protests. For example one the most well known protests was tons of people boycotting buses.
