Someone who can rally their people , stays calm and smart in stressful situations, and is willing to sacrifice for others are all great and necessary qualities of a leader. These characteristics are shown in Martin Luther King Jr one of the more known leaders. King was one of the many leaders in the Civil Rights Movement when Whites and Blacks were segregated. Motivating and Rallying people are important characteristics when being a leader. King was a man who did this very well. He was able to rally people of any color people of all races would protest with him. Thirdly, an effective leader must be intelligent to lead his/her group. Indeed, Martin Luther King is a very intelligent leader. His words changed the USA, and bridged the gap between the white and black populations. He used his intelligence in his speech “I Have a Dream,” which gave people hope that the segregation between the two races would one day become defeated.
To gain my admiration, a civil rights leader should be honest and open about their opinions without causing harm, effective in their ability to inspire others, and able to do what is right even when others doubt them. Even though Malcolm X expressed most these characteristics, I admire the works and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. because he was able to accomplish many things through peaceful protests and motivating words. Dr. King was able to promote equality for all races and showed kindness to everyone. Honesty is one of the characteristics a civil rights leader should have to gain my admiration. Dr. King was very honest about his intentions from the beginning.
Martin Luther King also demonstrated leadership ability when he also put his well-being on the line and not only took part of the civil rights marches but led them. He inspired others to follow because he made a personal commitment for his cause. The inspiration and the hope he gave was to all people not just one race. He gave people hope that one day that all people will be treated equally and be judged by their character. Martin Luther King was defiant as his home was bombed in 1956 and he continued with his dream showing his never give up attitude.
Different people make different leaders and will all have different qualities to make them leaders. Frederick Douglass was one of many great leaders during the civil war time. Frederick Douglass like other leaders possessed different qualities that made him a great leader. He had the qualities of being a problem solver and having competence. Competence is the determination to grow and learn.
There are many qualities that good leaders must possess in order to be able to maintain a group united and working together, whether it is a sports or any academic team or club. For example; football/volleyball, U.I.L/ National Honor Society, or even Spanish/Interact club. Leaders must be willing to pass on a positive influence and know when to take charge. They must begin to be role models to those they associate with on a daily basis.

The reason why I choose Martin Luther King Jr. as a leader is because he changed segregation. He wanted each of us to be equal and not be segregated. He wanted us to come together as one not as enemies but as friends/family. He just wanted us to change our ways of segregation and become equal with each other.
