Kom was born in Churachandpur district of rural Manipur in eastern India. She came from a poor family. Her parents named her Chungenijang. Kom kept her interest in boxing a secret from her father, himself an ex-wrestler, as he was concerned that boxing would hurt Kom's face and spoil her chances of marriage. However, he learnt of it when Kom's photo appeared in a newspaper after she won the state boxing championship in 2000. After three years, her father began to support Kom's pursuits in boxing as he grew convinced of her love of boxing. Kom got married to Onkholer who was a football coach in Imphal. She won a total of five National Championships from 2000 to 2005. Between 2001 and 2006, she won the AIBA World boxing championship thrice in 2002, 2005, and 2006, and came second in 2001. In 2008 she won a silver medal at the Asian Women’s Boxing Championship. The same year she won Gold at the AIBA Women’s world boxing championship in China, which was her fourth successive gold medal at the championship. Mary continued getting many such awards. Mary kom was decorated with the Padma Shri , in 2010 for her contribution in sports. She was honored with Padma Bhushan in 2013 for her wonderful achievements in sports. She won a Gold Medal in flyweight category on 2014 Incheon Asian Games. ‘Unbreakable’ which chronicles all her life’s struggles and how she rose above them, was released by Harper Collins in 2013. In 2014 ‘Mary Kom’ was released which was directed by Omung Kumar and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film stars Priyanka Chopra and depicts Kom’s journey of becoming a Boxer to her victory at the 2008 World Boxing Championship. Kom is an animal rights Activist, and supporter of PETA
