Any individual can be a hero if he/ she is willing to make sacrifices and act selfless to help others. A hero is brave, determined, and confident. Their actions influence people around them to adopt these noble qualities The acts that Rosa Parks has done demonstrates the many traits of a true hero. Early in Rosa Parks’ life, she realized that segregation was everywhere and that there was a black and white world, both very different.
An example of a hero is Martha from The Secret Garden. Although she doesn’t necessarily save anyone from anything tragic, she seems as if she would be Mary’s Hero. She is encouraging, positive, and caring. When Mary first arrived at Misselthwaite Manor, she was a contrary little girl that hated the moor when she first saw it. However, Martha finally encouraged her to go play in the moor with stories about her brother, Dickon, and what adventures he had in the moor.
One person who deserves to be a hero in my mind is Kim Roemig who went to a two year college at Kirkwood Community college to become a Cardiology Nurse. Yet, when she started she had no idea that she would end up doing that profession. It didn’t her until she was in her last year that she wanted to be a nurse. Finally, she graduated college and got her first job as a Cardiology Nurse Assistant at Mercy Care in Cedar Rapids. She has been a nurse for 17 years now, and is one of the best around.
Rosa Parks refused to give her seat up on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama; Malala Yousafzai defied threats from the Taliban to campaign for education; Mother Teresa dedicated her life to serving the poor. All of these people have something in common- they all have shown acts of heroism and courage. In Alvarez’s novel the Time of the Butterflies, the Mirabal sisters all demonstrate acts of courage equal to those stated above. Although all of the sisters show courage, it is Minerva, who demonstrates the greatest amount of courage. Minerva demonstrates exceptional courage throughout the story, including at the Discovery Day dance when she stood up to Trujillo, and while imprisoned and never gave up hope.
When a person hears the word, “Hero,” somebody that has impacted the life of a person in any part of way or another comes to mind. Someone that has a special place in a person’s heart counts as a hero, not any ordinary person. An African American by the name of Rosa Parks has that special effect on a numberless amount of people. Rosa Parks stood up for separation on December 1, 1955, when she did not give up her seat on a city bus.
Debi Mazar is an actress who stated, “A hero is somebody who is selfless, who is generous in spirit, who just tried to give back as much as possible and help people. A hero to me is someone who saves people and who really, deeply cares.” Heroes are relevant to everyone, because at some point, everyone has had a hero. Sadly, today’s society degrades the meaning of the word “hero”. Heroes are an important aspect of life, but famous people are not always heroes.

When you think of a hero, what or who do you think of? You probably think of Superman or Spider Man, but heroes are not only people who wear capes and masks or who have super powers. Ordinary people, who walk down the street or people who you are friends with, can be heroes. Christopher Reeves once said, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” Three characteristics that make someone a hero include overcoming obstacles, having courage, and showing patience.
