Elizabeth has never lied in her life but She does in order to protect his good name showing an act of forgiveness and compassion. In Act IV Elizabeth then does everything in her power to have him “forgive” her. In the end of Act IV she then questions him if he will confess and whichever he decides she will not judge him for she “…cannot judge...John” (1114) and then she tells him that she will not forgive him until he forgives himself for he longer thinks himself a good man and cannot forgive himself for all the trouble he put his wife and a the village through. “John it come naught that I should forgive you, if you’ll not forgive yourself. It is not my soul, john, it is yours. Only be sure for I know it now: whatever you will do, it is a good man does it… To which she then tells him then she apologizes to him for not being a good wife “…I have sins of my own to count. It needs a cold wife to prompt lechery” (1114). Showing she blames herself for her husband’s lechery, this then causes John to have the want of living, causing him to confess. This shows the strength and forgiveness Elizabeth has give john having her evolve from a doubtful wife to a woman who risks her she has taken for her

The Author Charles Frazier wrote in his book Cold Mountain “[No] matter what a waste a man has made of ones life, it is ever possible to find some path to redemption, however partial” John Proctor is a prime example of this quote. Towards the beginning of the play Miller gives the reader an impression that he is a selfish and immoral man that does not care about his family or the feelings of his wife, Elizabeth. As the play goes on however Miller’s representation of proctor can sway the opinions they have of John when he decides to let himself be hanged for good reason. Within the short timeline of the story John Proctor was able to look past his mistakes and restored his morals.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the setting is Salem, Massachusetts during the late 1600s where the town’s pious Puritan beliefs directly influence their government. A 17-year-old girl named Abigail Williams had an affair with John Proctor, a wealthy, married man. Abigail is told by John to move on but instead, Abigail starts accusing the townspeople of witchcraft, including John Proctor’s wife Elizabeth. As this hysteria begins to rise, other people such as Thomas Putnam, a rich landowner, start to also allege Salem villagers. In this play, the author illustrates the central idea that people should not allow jealousy to control their actions.

Arthur Miller is a commonly-known playwright, most famous for his 1953 play, The Crucible. The basis for The Crucible came from the witch trials which occurred in Salem, Massachusetts during the puritan era. Miller even uses some of the same characters in his dramatized play that were a part of the original witch trials in Salem. However, Miller made a few alterations to the historical members of the Salem society in order to suit his dramatic purpose in The Crucible, particularly Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Reverend Samuel Parris.

Due to paranoia, the once quiet town of Salem, Massachusetts has erupted with accusations, rumors, revenge, and in the end, death. The one thing that makes or breaks these characters is reputation. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, goes back to the year 1692 when witchcraft took over Salem. Neighbors are now seen as enemies and no one can be trusted. Over 15 people died in this true, American event because of false, witchcraft accusations. Abigail Williams,a young woman is spreading lies about local townspeople alongside her friends. In Miller’s play many women in Salem are taken in by the devil (as the town sees it) or are forced to join him in evil. As the so called evil moves through the town, it’s citizens accept the idea all too easily. When the church minister’s black slave, Tituba, confesses to being a witch she claims the devil drew he to his side by promising her a “pretty dress to wear” (47), a story which readily believed by Parris. This illustrates the pervasive sexism because people accept that a women was swayed to the devil’s side by a pretty dress. That is all it takes. It is also important because it displays that Tituba only says this because it is what they want to hear, what they expect to hear. These beliefs are also apparent in the easy conviction of many good women during the witch trials. Take for example Rebecca Nurse, who at the beginning of the play has such a great reputation that people in the next town over have “heard of your [her] great charities” (37) but is later implicated in “the marvelous and supernatural murder of Goody Putnam’s babies” (71). This shows the underlying sexism because the town accepts Rebecca's inculpation, even though she was one of the most respected members of the community. She was, despite her reputation, still weak and prone to evil simply because of her sex. No man in the story is as easily implicated, for a man to be incriminated he must make move directly against the court, like Proctor, who attempts to overthrow the court. John Proctor was a man of honor and had a well respected name in the town of Salem. Sadly he died tragically but as a hero. He was hanged because he was accused of doing the devil’s work. He was given the chance to save his life if he admitted on a piece of paper that he was working with the devil but he refused to tell that lie. He wanted his sons to be able to walk the streets without being shunned from the world because they deserved better. John Proctor didn’t want his name to be the ruined because he felt that was all he had left. John Proctor was tragically killed for a sin he had not committed but was found a hero because people followed in his footsteps by not confessing to something they didn’t do.

Arthur Miller’s portrayal of a town in the midst of a downfall “The Crucible”, tells the story of how mob mentality and hysteria can significantly influence not only individuals but the whole town. This mob mentality leads to unthoughtful acts and false accusations. Two characters who demonstrate how mob mentality can lead to the demise of Salem are Abigail and Mary Warren. As Abigail begins to be accused she is pressured to deter from the truth. While Mary Warren gets pressured by Proctor to reveal the truth about Abigail, but the overwhelming pressure from the mob makes her turn from the truth. In its society, there is the assumption that the male gender is superior, therefore holds more influence over others and gather more power. It is also assumed that females have slight power over men to manipulate them into doing things or believing things by using their femininity and innocence. These powers are displayed quite evidently in The Crucible which is set in a patriarchal society. In The Crucible, women were nothing without a husband or a father, no rights to own property, no rights to have a job and make a living, no rights. Yet when Abigail Williams convinced her friends to lie and falsely accuse others of being witches, the male judges had no qualms about believing them. Because the accusers were merely young women, of course they would be telling the truth. This demonstrates how males ruled Salem, but how women could efficiently portray their purity and trustworthiness through their innocence and ability to appear naïve, as men were privileged and women were marginalised and of as lower class. The power that gender has also deeply affects the power that a name holds. Men are the ones who carry on their name, therefore it is important that their name holds a certain power or role in the town. For example, Proctor did not want to admit to being part of any witchcraft because he did not want to have his name blackened for the sake of his children and wife. Millions of people are in unhealthy relationships, which can be identified in certain ways. In the tragedy, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor, and his wife, Elizabeth Proctor have issues in their marriage. John has an affair with a girl named Abigail Williams while Elizabeth is sick. As a result, this breaks her trust in him, making her come off as cold and reserved. The nature of John and Elizabeth’s relationship is unhealthy because their words and actions towards each other reveal a sense of hostility, mistrust, and lack of affection.

One of the main elements that eventually build up to the main plot in the play is power. Many of the characters in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible have a strong desire for power. The Salem witch trials empowered several characters in the play who were previously marginalized in Salem society. It gave them the chance to misuse it leading to horrible suffering and even deaths of some innocent people in the town. Some of these characters are Abigail Williams, Deputy Governor Danforth and Reverend Parris.

When people think of the play, “The Crucible”, they usually picture the witch trials and women being hanged, but Arthur Miller depicts the witch trials in a completely new light. He shows through a story that the witch trials were much more than just people calling others witches. There was deceit, pain, greed, and more. Through the play, we follow the character, Abigail, observe her actions and their consequences. We witness the lives of people she impacts, what happens to them, and how many times she lies to get her way. Abigail does all this for the man that she loves and had an affair with, John Proctor. If the reader begins to focus on John, his actions and what he stands for, they are easily able to recognize he portrays characteristics of the flawed nature of an individual. It is shown through the fact that he had an affair, isn’t able to forgive himself, and at the end of the book, is unable to give up something dear to him to save himself and others.

When reading the play The Crucible, I notice that men have more power than women do in the workforce and in general. In this time of history that was just how it was for everyone women are just not renown at all. Every reverend in the play is a man, and then all of the judges for the witch trials are also men. A woman 's place in this play and in this time period was in the house taking care of the chores and children, than their other job was to go to church and make sure their family goes to church. Women are always doing anything the men ask them to do without a hesitation, if they didn’t want to do it they would make their wife or servant do it for them, because they have more power than the women did. A
