Question 1 1.1 Problem Statement As part of the social responsibility of the company, the CEO has initiated an outreach project at a local orphanage and school. The tasks include general maintenance work in and around the buildings. Most of the staff considers these tasks to be unpleasant. It is the task of the middle manager to strive to motivate the staff to make a positive contribution to the outreach project without compensation and in their own time. The identification and application of the different motivational theories will be critical to ensure that the project is a success. 1.2 Needs-based perspectives on motivation The theory behind the needs based perspective is that motivation is driven by the requirement of an individual to fulfil a specific need. The need theorists categorised the needs by importance to individuals. (Moorhead & Griffin, 2012) The best known of the need theories include: • Maslow’s hierarchy of needs • Alderfer’s ERG theory • Herzberg’s dual structure theory • McClellands’s three-needs theory 1.2.1 Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs Abraham Maslow, a psychologist argued that we all have different levels of needs in accordance to its importance to us. It starts with the lowest most basic needs also named deficiency needs, these needs are the physiological needs, the security needs and the belongingness needs.
