Martin Bryant Martin Bryant was a mass murderer who grew up in Hobart, Tasmania and was the first born child of Maurice and Carleen Bryant. Bryant attended News Town primary school until he was transferred to a special education unit in 1980. Despite only being diagnosed with an intellectual disability after the massacre, Bryant’s parents noticed behavioural abnormalities as early as when Bryant was a toddler. As an adult, Bryant’s behaviour continued to depict that he was disturbed. When his father died from suicide police officers stated that Bryant was not worried and appeared to be excited by the search. He started at David and Noelene Martin’s guest house where Bryant’s father had allegedly had a disagreement with. Bryant shot and killed the Martins before travelling to Port Arthur. When Bryant arrived at Port Arthur, he entered the Broad Arrow Café on the grounds of the historic monument. Bryant made an effort to strike up talks with passers-by while he was eating about lack of wasps in the area and other random topics. Bryant than strolled towards the café's back after finishing his meal and pulled out a semi-automatic gun and started killing customers and employees from the hip. He fired seventeen shots in the span of fifteen seconds, leaving ten wounded and twelve dead. Then Bryant moved to the opposite side of the store and fired twelve more times, killing eight more people, and injuring two more. He then drove down the road and killed more people before taking a hostage back to the martin’s guest house where he negotiated with the police until his phone that he was using to communicate ran out, and he killed his hostage. However, there were several delicate stages in Bryant’s life where actions could have been taken to help his behaviour and prevent the future tragedy from occurring. One of the reasons Bryant committed his crime was because of his distance from society and relationships. Bryant had very few close friendships and was never very close with his family. In primary school, when his lack of close friendships was first beginning to be noticed by his parents and teachers, more support should have been given to him to help him develop relationships with his peers. Having more friendships growing up would also help with the severe bullying Bryant had during his school life and how that effected his outlook on people in his close community but also prevent his hatred and lack of trust her had with all of society.
