She tried to protect her little child away from bad things that happened everyday in society. Moreover, in the last line was written, “You mean to say that after all you are really going to be the kind of woman who the baker won’t let near the bread?”(Kincaid 172). Therefore, “it seem ironic that the mother has harshly demand the girl to learn all of the mother’s habits and methods, not giving the girl much of a word in any of her decisions, and then expects her to have the strength of her mother, strength that was learned through experience, not instruction” (Carroll). The short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid was a lesson of a mother to a daughter about to become a woman.
Friends tempting her to stray from her path. The environment testing how mentally tough she was to overcome all the problems that came with living in the area she grew up in. Drugs, crime, gangs, all there to break people out of their hopes and dreams. In this time in Pocahontas’s life, she used positivity more than anything to keep her going. When her mother came to retrieve the young girl from the school house, the local police followed the orders of the Dictator and jailed her mother, enabling the young girl to receive her education. We continue to watch the poor get poorer and the rich get richer. We continue to watch the oppressors do as they please. We have eyes, yet we are blinded by the belief that we are safer if we stayed out of their business, not realizing that this is everyone’s business. We have ears, yet we refuse to listen to the cries of the helpless. We have hearts, but we don’t feel the pain of those who lost their loved ones.
The mother in this poem is a strong soul. She holds herself together in a difficult situation that could end up with her entire family hungry. Unknown to her children she is going hungry so that they might eat. The mother keeps this a secret so that her children do not have to deal with adult problems and allow them to play and act as children might.
Lina demonstrated courage in life changing situations at only the age of 15 and did a great job at it. For example,Lina displayed courage when she documented significant events by drawing, hoping these messages would end up in her father's hands, but at a great risk. Lina was aware that the consequences of her drawings being found could lead to death in reason of the NKVD not tolerating any sneaky behaviour, but she continued. Along with her headstrong personality Lina also displayed courage when standing up to a guard and screaming the words “I HATE YOU”. At the age of fifteen she had great fortitude to confront the authority that could borderline her life in a second if wanted.
So Sofia tried to beat the bully without using violence or being mean back, she tried to use her mental and athletic ability to beat the bully. At the end of the story Amy is more true to herself whereas Sofia tries to beat the bully and stand up for who she is. In the stories “Fish Cheeks” and “Taco Head” both narrators learn similar lessons about being themselves. They should be proud of who they are because as Dr. Seuss says, “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”

It is just within the nature of humans to break down and give up when these disasters come about, and to try to hide from the reality. Then once you face reality, you realize you need to start your life all over again, in some cases this is in foreign place where you know no one.

“Luma promised to pick Jeremiah up before practice and to drop him off afterward (58).” Luma promised Jeremiah mother Beatrice that she will make sure he would be safe getting to and from practice every day. As a young girl, she was innocent and unaware of all the discrimination in the south. Growing up, Anne has dealt with severe poverty and is often the one bringing income to her family’s home along with her mother. Her employers are a huge factor as to why she is so drawn to the movement. For instance, when Anne learned about Emmitt Till being killed, she ran to her mother for an explanation but her mother had replied “…just do your work like you don’t know nothing… that boy’s a lot better off in heaven than he is here” (262). Her mother brushing off the death of Emmitt Till took the best of her curiosities and she questioned why her mother was acting so afraid although it was obvious that.
They will continue to deter workers from exercising their rights by finding illegal tactics to keep them from organizing. American works must act now! They must get the younger generation involved; their future is imperative for union survival. Members can improve their culture by sharing their concerns with union organizers. Members must realize their union dues gives them a voice within and if they threatened to withdraw their funding organizers will listen.
ASMSA is for those who want the challenge to motivate and sculpt them into a well diligent student. The level of difficulty ASMSA has to offer, is exactly what I am looking for in order to be successful in life. I, personally, want to set an example for others, and show them that life is too special to just make ends meet. I want to be a leader, and lead others into becoming a leader. I want to accomplish great things in life.
