CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Material handling involves movement, storage, protection as well as control of materials throughout the manufacturing and distribution process including their consumption and disposal (The Material Handling Industry of America). According to Aized (2010), material handling can be defined as an integrated system involving such activities as moving, handling, storing and controlling of materials by means of gravity, manual effort or power activated machinery. In a simple way of understanding, material handling is concerned with loading, moving and unloading of materials. Material handling in engineering field is referred as the industrial activities and part of the production process.

The categories are as follows:
i. Material transport equipment
• Material transport equipment is used to transport or move materials from one location to another inside a factory, warehouse or other facility. In general, there are five types of material transport equipment which are industrial trucks, Automated guided vehicles, monorails and other rail guided vehicles, conveyors and cranes.
ii. Storage systems
• To store materials for certain period of time and allow retrieval the materials when required. There are conventional and automated storage methods. Conventional storage method includes bulk storage, rack systems, shelving and bin, as well as drawer storage. Automated storage system includes Automated Storage/Retrieval System (AS/RS) and Carousel storage system.
iii. Unitizing equipment
• Refers to containers and unitizers. Containers are used to hold loose item so that it is easy to move and store where as the unitizers is describe as an equipment used to load and package the containers. For most operations, the main goal of using the equipment is that the load can be protected while it is in
Choose one approach to standardization storing of data? a) MIS b) Organized
Materials assignment notes. We have come together as three separate companies who have experience of working with each other on many other projects, to provide the specified requirements that the client is looking for. After surveying the site and looking at the surrounding areas we have come up with a design that incorporates all three of our products.
1) Identify aspects of Jim Quintero’s management style according to the four main management theories (Classical, Behavioral, Systems, and Contingency). While most organizations can more than likely identify at least some aspects from each of the four management theories, Quintero’s steel company identifies most with the Behavioral Approach with aspects of the Systems and Contingency Approach blending together in my opinion. Not having much detail on Cool Steel Company’s (CSC) organizational structural it is difficult to determine how much management falls under the Classical Approach, but seeing there are managers (not first-level supervisors) and reviewing Henri Fayol’s general principals, one can assume a structure of sorts. There are several examples of the Behavioral Approach (e.g., trusting, respect, responsibility…) that will be covered in more detail in response to question number two. It is clear that CSC’s success would be in line with the practices described in the cooperative system outlined in the Systems Approach and by virtue of employees being given the ability or responsibility to make decisions; the Contingency Approach can be applied.
Introduction Cooper Tire and Rubber Company was found in the 1914. This company specialized in manufacturing raw materials and also tires for all types of vehicles. Cooper Tire change from producing low cost types of tires to producing a wide variety of high performance tires that is customize to the needs of the growing population of cars. This company has a strong competitive force in the global automotive tire industry.
It is imperative to understand the current conditions of what materials are candidates for return, compared to the performance level of returns achieved each day. The delta between the identified material returns and the actual returns will provide information for goal setting. Additionally, with the transfer of raw materials into the warehouse, there must be a transaction to receive it into inventory and distribute it to the appropriate location. At that point, the process will be complete for the appropriate accounting of the materials, creating availability for consumption at the next production demand. The data collected will be influential in developing a robust procedure for each assembly line to follow in a consistent manner.
The manufacturing is done with help of skilled labor. The skilled labor is one of the major strengths for Olympia, they not only carry out the painting job, various operations on the floor (the floor workers) but also manage the mate assembly line operations (called the assemblers). The operating expense of all the machines, raw material costs and overheads and the Labor costs and overheads are mentioned in the EXHIBIT 2. The expenses for all the assembly lines are given separately except for the case of Interior Assembly Machine assembly line, which also includes the cost of labor that is being used to operate on these machines.
Quantity Surveying- This department deals with the running of contracted jobs and the information found here would consist of invoices, progress reports, valuations and labour reports. Explain the need for safe storage and efficient retrieval of information. Storing information could be in the form of filing, computer based or memory sticks. The need for storing any information is for easy retrieval in the future so that the person has the required information when needed.
In the company photograph of the 130th Chemical Company the three friends are pictured sitting together shoulder to shoulder, just as they joined the Army together, trained together, and stationed together in London, where on July 3, 1944, died together. Prior to their enlistment in the Army, Robert H. Cook, Philip J. Conley, and Chester R. Peterson were close friends while living in Portland. The three friends left for training together in January 1943, and were assigned to the 130th Chemical Processing Company at Camp Sibert, Alabama.
An Analysis of Lincoln Electric Company’s Culture through Assessment of its Case Study After thorough investigation of the Lincoln Electric Company’s (LEC) Harvard Case Study, certain understanding and reflections may be made about the company’s culture from a multi-faceted perspectives such as the visual aspects of culture and its maintenance dynamics as observed in the textbook’s Chapter 8. ( Carpenter, Taylor, & Erdogan, 2009) Continuing Influence of Founders at Lincoln Electric It is easily evident from the case study that the diverse aspects of LEC’s operations --- from investors, employees, and customers to how the senior management conducts and approaches its business --- all reflect the philosophy, vision, and ideals of its founders:
Moving and handling has a various number of aids that can be used for each client depending on their needs, these are; o Stand aids – these are used for simple transfers for example chair to toilet manoeuvres for clients who can weight bare. o Hoists – these are used for clients who are unable to weight bare. o Banana boards – these are used for transfers such as bed to
Do you think Alice Thornton’s proposal to decentralize the rules and procedures of Cosmo Plastics will work? Alice proposal of decentralizing the rules and procedures in Cosmo Plastics has a bigger chance of working out in a big company with different departments and great number of employees, because then daily operations and decision-making are divided into different authorities in the organization from the top managements, to the middle and lower level managements. Especially when you have this flexibility in work hours, because some departments in the company need constant attention and discipline from the side of employees, decentralizing is needed to divide the controlling process. On another scale, small groups will be formed, employees
Coordinate with customer relationship management to identify customer articulated needs 2. Select materials and suppliers in conjunction with procurement 3. Develop production technology in manufacturing flow to manufacture and integrate in to the best supply chain flow for the product/market combination G. Manufacturing Flow Management The manufacturing process produces and supplies products to the distribution channels based on past forecasts. The production process has to be flexible to respond to market changes and Mass Customization must absorb.
By using low-cost incremental technology that software applied to inventory control, order selection, short interval scheduling as well as sales forecasting. Company have managed to reduce their inventory levels through just-in-time system, electronic direct interchange (EDI) and extranet enabling retailer and supplier to be in constant touch. Electronic warehousing systems are used for the storage of information. (Marketing policy, planning and communication) For any changes which may occur, the company must be ready to adapt by having IT department that will handles all the technological issues.
Thus, customer warehouse system is known as a less expensive
In the first year of my graduation, the subject of workshop technology was offered which helped me to understand the basics of manufacturing. It involved study and working on machines like Lathe, Milling, Universal Grinding Machine, and other specific machinery. In later stage of my graduate programme, I
