Men of the jury, we are here today to discuss the case of Mayella Ewell and Tom Robinson. On November 21, Tom Robinson allegedly raped Mayella Ewell when she demanded him to go inside her home to break up a chiffarobe for her, and as stated before Mayella had stated this is the first time she let Mr. Robinson into her home. When she let Tom Robinson in, he grabbed her from behind and took advantage of her while she screamed and did her best to fight him off. She ended up with finger marks around her neck and an injury to her right eye. Mr. Ewell testified that he witness the rape happen through the window, and he described the room as ‘slung around’ as if there was a fight. The rape would be a class B felony which results in a maximum sentence …show more content…
Tom Robinson testifies that on November 21, Mayella asks for him to fix up a loose door, so he goes in to help her. When Tom Robinson was told to stand on a chair to retrieve a box on top of a chiffarobe Mayella had wrapped her arms around him and he jumped off the chair in fear and shock, so the only thing that was ‘slung around’ in that room was the chair Tom Robinson was once standing on. Afterwards Mayella had kissed him and Mr. Ewell had seen that through the window, so he yelled at Mayella calling her a whore and how he would kill Miss Mayella. And from what Mr. Robinson felt when repeating what Bob Ewell had said that day to miss Mayella, it seems to be clear that he never wanted to be the reason why Miss Mayella would have to deal with her fathers cruel actions. He wanted to help miss Mayella but never expected this would come from his …show more content…
Tom Robinson is not guilty because of his obvious disability making him unable to do half of the things the victim claims he has done. As noted before Tom Robinson's left arm is completely useless to him after his accident at work, let alone it is a whole foot shorter than the other arm, if he were to punch Miss Mayella in the face with his right arm her injury should of most likely have been on her left eye, as in when you swing at a person with either or right or left you would almost always hit their opposite eye. Such as if you had struck someone's face with your left arm, you would most definitely hit their right eye much rather than if you struck them with your right arm, it just makes far more sense that way. Now people of the court, do you think Mr. Robinson is capable of doing such an action when it is so clear how useless his right arm is to him? Let that be my first point to why you should be able to see why the defendant, Tom Robinson should be decreed
During the trial, Tom Robinson revealed that Mayella’s father verbally and sexually abuses her. Tom states “She says she never kissed a grown man before. She says what her papa do to her don’t count.” (Doc. B) After Mr. Ewell caught Tom and Mayella, he called Mayella a “goddamn whore” and threatens her by saying “I’ll kill ya.” (Doc. B)
During the trial, Atticus reveals that, “Mayella Ewell was beaten savagely,”(Lee). Mayella and her father claimed the abuser to be Tom Robinson. As Mayella had been beaten mostly on her left side, Atticus mentioned that Mayella’s father “swore out a warrant, no doubt signing it with his left hand,”(Lee). By showing Mayella’s father’s dominant hand, the newfound information that he was possibly guilty entered the jury’s minds, yet Tom Robinson was still a suspect. To defend Tom, Atticus said that, “Tom Robinson now sits before you, having taken the oath with the only good hand he possesses-his right,”(Lee).
Since that day, Tom has been unable to use his left arm. Not only was he unable to beat Ms. Ewell on her right side, but there is more evidence to prove that Mr. Robinson was not guilty.
Tom Robinson's life was unfairly taken by Maycomb county all because of 2 people, Mayella Ewell and Bob Ewell. Mayella Ewell is a 19 year old girl who lives with her dad Bob Ewell in Maycomb county. Mayella and her father are trying to convince the judges that Tom Robinson raped her and beat her but that seems like it didnt happen because Tom Robinson has disability. During Tom Robinson's trial whenever Mayella was asked to talk about her father or any exact details she starts tantruming and hesitating.
Gilmer starts his cross-examination of Tom Robinson by asking him about a previous case he had when he got in a fight with another guy. Mr. Gilmer asked, “what did the guy look like when you got through with him” (Lee 223). Mr. Gilmer starts with this by putting a bad picture in the jury’s mind of Tom by making a false statement that Tom beat the guy up and hurt him when in reality Tom was the one that got beat up. Then Mr. Gilmer goes on to tell the jury “anyone who was convicted of disorderly conduct could easily have had it in his heart to take advantage of Mayella” (Lee 223). Mr. Gilmer says this claiming Tom is a bad guy and he did it, just because Tom has had a questionable history does not mean he is a bad guy anymore.
Atticus proved Tom couldn’t have used his bad left hand and beaten Mayella up on the right side of her face where she was hurt. Bob Ewell was ambidextrous and could have used his strong left hand to hurt Mayella when he saw her kissing Robinson. When Tom was asked why he helped her for free he replied, “Yes suh I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more’n the rest of ‘em” (p.197) Mr. Gilmer then yelled, “You felt sorry for her, you felt sorry for her?”(p.197) Because a black man with all of his problems says he feels sorry for a white woman, this doesn’t help his case and seems to make the all white, racist jury angry. Why didn’t Ewell take Mayella to the doctor to prove a rape took place?
The trial of cotton worker Tom Robinson, who was accused of raping nineteen year old Mayella Ewell back in November, has begun. Robinson was arrested on November 21 after Mayella identified him as her attacker. The accused worked for Mr. Link Deas and is married with three children. None of the other Ewell children nor their father were home at the time.
I completely agree with you that Tom Robinson in no way could have choked, punched, and raped a girl at the same time. With one hand that would be impossible to do all at the same time without Mayella being able to get away. If you think about it Robinson would have to have quite a rhythm in order to actually accomplish it, but if Mayella really was thrashing about he could not have gotten into a rhythm. Robinson’s movements would have gotten clunky and Mayella’s kicking and thrashing should have been able to get her free during a time when Robinson had no hold on her. This means Mayella’s story should have been really different.
Even though the jury found Tom Robinson guilty of raping Mayella Ewell, in that matter Atticus Finch, lawyer defending Tom Robinson, said that Tom Robinson was not guilty because he only has one arm and there is no way that Tom Robinson was able to hurt her while Bob Ewell is perfectly fine and
(171) This quote is important as the action described here cannot be done by Tom Robinson as he only has one useful arm. This closing remark from To Kill A Mockingbird alludes that Tom Robinson had not even harmed Mayella in any way, but that Bob Ewell both beat and raped Mayella “The state has not produced one iota of medical evidence to the effect that the crime Tom Robinson is charged with ever took place. It has relied instead upon the testimony of two witnesses whose evidence has not only been called into serious question on cross-examination, but has been flatly contradicted by the defendant. The defendant is not guilty, but somebody in this courtroom is.”
This past week, without doubt, has been nothing short of a heated one here in Maycomb. As of recent, Thomas Robinson, a twenty-five year-old Negro, was put on trial for the accused rape of nineteen year-old Mayella Ewell. Judge Taylor covered the trial, with Solicitor Mr. Gilmer prosecuting, and Mr. Finch covering defense for Mr. Robinson. The trial begun with Sheriff Heck Tate retelling his account. He details Mr. Ewell reporting the rape of Mayella Ewell on November 21st, her sustained injuries, including a choice of not calling a doctor due to financial issues.
Ewell case, who let their own personal opinions influence the verdict made. On the day of the trial, a jury of twelve Maycomb County members, sat to make a verdict on whether or not Tom Robinson raped Mayella Ewell. After hearing three stories from Bob, Mayella, and Tom. The jury came to a unanimous decision, without any evidence, that Tom was guilty of rape. SCENE
I agree that someone was guilty of beating or raping Miss Mayella Ewell, but based upon all evidence brought upon us by the witnesses, Tom Robinson could not, and should not, be convicted for a crime that he likely did not
The evidence heavily supports that Tom Robinson could not have beaten Mayella Ewell. Robert not only lied in court, but he also beat Mayella himself. After seeing Mayella kiss Tom, Mayella’s father, who is extremely racist, beat Mayella which caused Tom Robinson to run away in fear, making him look guilty. Mayella Ewell has been abused by her father, sexually and physically, but he refuses to take the blame. Mayella Ewell unwillingly lies in court to sacrifice an innocent black man to keep her father free of accountability.
No medical evidence was ever collected or shown to prove that the crime ever took place. On the night after the assault, Mayella Ewell was never seen be a doctor. She was never examined to prove that Tom Robinson did anything to her. Mayella stated that she was beaten that night, so she should have gone to the doctor to get checked out. There is no proof of any crime, so there should not have been a guilty verdict.
