Greg finds himself arguing whether to comfort his friend Rachel who was diagnosed with Leukemia or to keep living his ordinary and commonplace life. Spending time with Rachel would lead to people believing he was in her friend group. This would eventually lead to the creation of enemies which is what Greg wanted to avoid in the first place. Whether Greg should show Rachel the movies he and Earl made is another man versus self conflict. Greg must make his own decision whether or not to embarrass himself by sharing his unprofessional video shorts to someone other than Earl or himself.

Gilbert Grape.’ This expressionless verbal introduction demonstrates that Gilbert has lost the entire spark out of his life and devalues himself. This is also seen when he was questioned what he wanted and he says what he wishes for everyone else. He says ‘I want to be a good person.’ Implying that he does not think he is a good person and is selfless. Gilbert always wants things for others, but never asks for things for himself. He does this in the beginning of the film when he is seen outside the singing lesson with her.
The film reveals small details that show Jerome's taking over Gina's life, such as the contagious eye infection, Gina's abandonment her career and family, moving to Paris and depression over being heartbroken. The director use of light and color into the film illustrate a richer story in many ways. First of all is to tell a love story from Gina's perspective. The romance in Gina's imagination is certainly being dramatized by the use of intense, hazy colors of pink and red. Those moments are shown in the color setting of the strip club in Paris, the color when they have a drunken love-making.
