Euripides was an author born in 480-406 B.C. He was known for giving sympathy in his plays towards women and the victims of society. His most popular play, Medea, is a Greek tragedy; it was first produced in 431 BC and premiered in Athens. In 2014, Medea made a come back in Joshua Morgan’s production of Medea Got Problems. In this one woman show, Medea breaks down the fourth wall and interacts with the audience. Medea is a Greek tragedy, which is set in Corinth. Medea is a woman of sorcery. She uses her powers to help a man named Jason receive the Golden Fleece and fall in love with her. She leaves her home and plans to live with Jason in the city of Iolcus. When they finally make it to Iolcus, she manipulates the daughters of the king to kill him. Jason and Medea have been found guilty of their treachery and are exiled as murders. They eventually settle in Corinth and have a family consisting of two sons. Unfortunately, Jason divorces Medea and marries Glauce, the daughter of King Creon which makes Jason now royalty. Medea does not take this news well; she becomes depressed and suicidal then becomes psychotic with rage. Medea wants her revenge; she has come up with a plan to murder Jason, his wife, and even her own kids. Creon the king has his suspicions about Medea plotting her revenge so he gives her one day to get …show more content…
Jason leaved Medea and gets with Princess Glauce. Glauce never spoke in the play but we assume she is young and beautiful which gives more reason for Medea to become jealous. King Creon is the king of Corinth and the one who orders Medea and her children to leave Corinth because he has a feeling she is planning something evil. Medea’s children are two young naïve boys who do not realize their mom is crazed. Medea is a woman of sorcery and has done many treacherous things in order to get revenge on her ex-husband,
Medea wanted to give Glauke a gift and knew the only way she would take it is if her sons would give her the gift. When Jason saw that Medea wanted to give Glauke a gift he thought she had a change of heart. Medea wanted the gifts she has prepared personally given to Glauke because she put poison in the dress, that she knew she would want to try on. The poison Medea places in her dress killed her and when her father Creon the King of Corinth saw, he embraces her. At that moment the poison then took effect on him as well.
Answer then support with evidence from the play. Provide line numbers. King Creon exiles Medea not only to protect his family from the scandalous situation that resulted from Jason leaving her but from the destruction she can create. For example, King Creon states "There is a good chance you might well instigate some fatal harm against my daughter" (line 330). As well as "I hear you are making threats to take revenge on Jason" (line 335).
This is an ironic statement as Medea is actually planning to kill her children, a fact which the audience does not yet know about. Jason uses another form of rhetorical stretching, which includes his plea that leaving his wife and children was a ‘wise move’, and that the decision was made with Medea’s best interests at heart, as much an attempt to convince himself as much as the audience. The chorus is quick to point out that ‘You have betrayed your wife and are acting badly.’ The Nurse is our first instance of anagnorisis during the play. Though an ancient Greek audience would well be in tune with the stories in Greek mythology, the Nurse’s role would still have proved important, as she was a tool Euripides used to transport the audience
(Euripides 31). Medea takes pity on herself. This is why the whole play is so horrific. She thinks because she has lost one loved one she must punish him. In result she lost all her loved ones because she murders her own children.
In Medea by Euripides, Medea 's character flaw that ultimately led to her downfall is revenge. Medea 's husband Jason left her to marry a younger, beautiful woman. Medea becomes outraged, and all she thinks about is getting revenge. She kills Glauce, Jason 's new wife, and her father, Creon. She wanted her revenge to be perfect she even killed her own children to get revenge on Jason leaving her.
Medea plots her revenge by murdering the king, the bride and her two children in order to make Jason suffer and take away everything Jason cared about. The Greek gods felt that Medea was in her right and they proved this by allowing and even helping her escape in the end of the play
In Euripides’ text The Medea, Medea can easily be painted as the villian. She is a woman who killed her own children in an attempt to spite her husband. But, by examining the text, we can see that she deserves some sympathy. She has little to no control over her own life and has to rely on the will of men. And as a foreigner in Corinth abandoned by her husband, she faces even more challenges than the native women of Corinth did.
Medea never intends to commit any acts of cruelty until she’s banished which eventually leads to the rising action. The King tells Medea to leave even though she has no plan and no help for her sons. She is pushed further off a cliff with no chance of escape. The moment after she has a last day granted to stay, she starts planning the murder of Jason and his wife. She feels the need to get back at Jason for what he did and any chance of getting back with him is ruined.
One of the plays that deals with revenge as a key plot element is "Medea" by Euripides. In the play, Jason, Medea's husband, is responsible for the death of Glauce, Creon, and Medea's children since he is the cause of Medea's suffering and need for revenge. The play "Medea" deals with a women named Medea who is
However, this was clearly not his intention because he did nothing to prevent his children being kicked out into the wild. Unsurprisingly, Medea became enraged and sought to obtain the justice she was not able to obtain. She wanted to judge Jason based on his inexplicable actions. He abandoned his paternal duties and were willing to start a new life, while she and their children were left to
Lush explains “Although Euripides did not cast Medea as a male solider as its protagonist, the play depicts Medea as suffering from the background Trauma, betrayal, isolation and consequent symptoms attributed to combat veterans with lasting psychological injuries” (Lush, 2014, p. 25). Hence using Lush’s view on Medea’s character as a devoted warrior suffering from Traumatic hardships in her experiences with the man she gave everything to, we can understand why she wanted revenge. Medea believes Jason owes her more than just the normal husband-wife obligations a man swears to when marrying a woman; in her view, she helped him be the man that he is and supported him throughout his heroic journey. Without her, Jason would not have succeeded in retrieving the Golden Fleece. Without her, he would not have had his father resurrected.
The villain side of Medea is portrayed when she talks about how she will get revenge on Jason for leaving her for another woman. Medea says: That, though he could have made nothing of all my plans By exiling me, he has given me this one day To stay here, and in this I will make dead bodies Of three of my enemies--father, the girl, and my
Ancient Greeks had a deep suspicion of foreigners, thinking of them all as "barbarians." With Medea, Euripides seems to confront this prejudice by choosing to honor a foreigner with the role of tragic heroine and by making her the most intelligent character in the play. However, the playwright also confirms many Greek stereotypes of foreigners by making Medea wild, overly passionate, and vengeful. When Medea was explaining her intention of killing the royals to the Chorus she said, "I have no city, and I'm being abused by my own husband. I was carried off, a trophy from a barbarian country.
Back in Ancient Greece the Greeks would have considered Jason to be the tragic hero however, throughout the play Medea, Euripides sets a very clear notion regarding the position of woman throughout the play. Woman weren’t seen as equals. Their status was lower than a man’s status. In the play Medea, Medea sacrifices everything just for Jason. Her city, her family, and also her status just because of love.
