Other victims become disgusted with themselves, begin to be paranoid about how others think about them, and feel overwhelmed when being cyberbullied because the bullying never stops. Studies show that the victim can also suffer from anxiety and depression due to the lack of self-confidence and self-esteem that has been broken down from cyberbullies. It is also stated that the victims can become suicidal from this.
Media plays an important role and has influence in almost every aspect of a person’s life. Personally in my own life it has both positive and negative effects. One positive effect is that it’s my best source of knowing what’s happening in the world. It’s the best source of finding out what the news is around the world and the weather forecasts. It’s also very helpful on an educationally aspect.
At an early age, girls have been exposed to these beauty standards; in some toys like Barbie dolls and cartoons, they make the characters have unattainable physical bodies. Body standards are a social construct that are enforced in day to day interactions and are perpetuated by social media. On apps such as Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, teenagers are exposed to endless posts of the “ideal” body type, particularly by Instagram models and influencers. A 2015 study by Laura Romo held a focus group with Mexican American adolescent females to discuss their views on body image and the media. Most of the girls said they were aware that being thin is the standard of beauty as shown by white women in movies, television shows, advertisements, and so forth.
Social media is a powerful source in today’s society, 81% of the population in the United States alone has set up a social media profile. Many use the media for useful things, like educational opportunities and business inquiries. Although there are people who may look at it more in a concerning aspect. Many people today view the social media as a stage where they are judged and told what the real way to look and act is, more specifically, body image. Social Media has a negative impact on body image, through creating a perfect view physically which affects someone mentally, targeting both male and female, and turning away from the real goal of social media.

When we think of bullying, we think of it ending when the school day is over, but there is a way for children to be bullied when they are inside their own home and it can be more harmful than you think. Cyberbullying is not really discussed between people mostly for the reason that people think it could just be someone writing an idiotic comment, but there are times when these types of comments can escalate to the point it may hurt the victim in some way or may cause them to act in a way that can cause self harm or harm to the people around them. This type of bullying should not be taken lightly because of the events or things it may cause and the problems that can be formed. To begin with, many children in this day use technology because it’s easy to access and it can be fun, but there are times when people use social media and technology with a bad intention to hurt someone.
There is no question that the media can heavily influence its users, which is majority of the developed world. With this being said, a considerable portion of the globe’s population is almost constantly kept up to date with the daily affairs of and around Gaia. Such information is spread through new media, such as social media, as well as the more archaic forms such as newspapers, radio and television. With the never-ending supply of news and current affairs, it is difficult to avoid it. With the many platforms of media, we tend to get consumed by what it offers, in such a way that we spend the bulk of our time immersed in it.
The media and body image certainly plays an immense part in today 's world and the way each individual views themselves. In today 's society we are bombarded with advertisements every day which affects the way we think of ourselves. Since the portrayal of a "perfect person" is someone with the perfect weight, hair, skin, figure and features, everyone is grounded on becoming what society presents as the "perfect" girl, guy, woman or man. Since many kids and teenagers get exposed to media at a young age, the ideal "perfect" body, throughout their whole life, will always be made a goal to look like the woman or man in the magazine. Some people are even in perfect shape, but what they see in the mirror is far from perfect.
Most current media is bias. The government needs to work towards making the media more progressive, which will decline the affects of harmful media. To reduce this concern, the government can limit what consists in the media due to strict policies. Everyone needs to work together to reduce the biases involved in the media. Also, according to College Men’s Third person Perceptions about Idealized Body Image and Consequent Behavior portrays that young children “who are influences by the idealized body images portrayed in the media tend to compare their bodies to the media”
The aim of the research is to study the relationship between body image and mass media. Media plays an important role in every human being’s everyday life. From the second you wake up till you go to bed in after saying goodnight to your wife, child, kid, parents, siblings or friends, you are encompassed in a world of surrounded with only media. In the first place there was the telegraph and the post offices, then the radio, the daily paper, magazines, TV and now the internet and the new media including palmtops, hand phones and many more (Mughal, n.d). There are positive and negative impacts of mass media, which we must see as a dependable individual of a general public.
With the influences of the media, society is bombarded with images of health, beauty, attractiveness, fashion and fitness. The super, skinny woman and the muscular and handsome man is plastered everywhere, thus adding pressure to conform to these ideals. When people compare themselves to persons different from them, they usually develop an inaccurate appraisal of themselves and their bodies. They may see themselves as lacking and engage in behaviours to emulate the bodies of those presented in the media. As noted earlier, failure to conform to these media images, results in persons regarding their bodies negatively and developing low-self-esteem.
