The Athletic Code lays out rules for athletes and discipline for breaking those rules. Recently the Athletic Code also began to apply to students in other extracurricular activities. The Athletic Code dictates that coaches/advisors handle discipline for minor infractions, but infractions for violating the substance abuse rules are spelled out. The consequences for violating the substance abuse policy the first time includes a meeting with the athlete/participant, coach/advisor, administration, and parents; suspension; and and five meetings with the school’s substance abuse counselor (Medomak Valley Athletic Code, p. 4). The second offence leads to similar consequences, but with a longer suspension (Medomak Valley Athletic Code, pp. 4-5). Recently, many athletes, at the college and professional level, have been in trouble with the law. Athletes have gotten away with violating many laws and policies, but now they are starting to be punished. The NCAA has not done enough to punish their athletes, because the athletes are still behaving wrongly. Athletes that have faced consequences are still causing problems. Therefore, the NCAA needs to do something different in their punishing of the responsible colleges, coaches, and especially players.
The use of performance-enhancing drugs, or PED’s, in sports has been a significant cause of athlete ridicule over the past several years in the United States of America and throughout the world. PED’s are considered a banned substance in nearly every athletic competition that is regulated at the highest level. In America, the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), and Major League Baseball (MLB) are the largest professional sports companies, all of which have PED’s as a banned substance. Further, the players face significant fines, suspensions, and other penalties if they abuse the respective PED policies for each league. In my district, the short-term suspensions are when a student violated an infringement of the code of conduct. Short-term suspensions can have student’s out-of-school for at least 10 days or less, the school principal should illuminate the student of the particular infringement and give the student chances to react to the charges. At this point, the student may exhibit their own version of the infringement brought upon them. When the school principal makes the decision to suspended the student, the school must 1) try to inform the student's parent or guardian of the suspension; 2) make any provisions for the student’s time at home; and 3) advise and/or send composed warning to the parent or guardian advising them of the suspension, of its reason, the length of the suspension, the privilege to bid, the student's entitlement to come back to school, and any conditions for that arrival.
The school’s policies and procedures in regards to illegal drug use on campus have not been updated since 1970, when there was a more relaxed perspective of drug use. In 1970, cocaine was perceived as being used by the wealthy and the users and dealers were a lot younger (Abadinsky, 2014). This school’s policies and procedures haven’t been revised since “crack” was created in 1980 (Abadinsky, 2014). A lot has changed since 1970 and with new and different drugs in existence the level of violence has increased (Abadinsky, 2014).

For years, the use of performance-enhancing drugs has haunted all levels of sport, baseball taking the majority of the publicity. Many have lost sight of the fact that baseball players are not the only athletes that face this life threatening addiction. Due to the amount of padding they have to wear, football players can easily disguise their size therefore keeping them from receiving scrutiny from the public. This has allowed more and more players to look to PEDs in order to gain an edge over their opponents. The issue spans to not only the professional level, but the high school and collegiate divisions as well. Because the National Football League sits on a higher platform, they bring in an exceptional amount of money compared to that

The current policy on the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport is underpinned by both a paternalistic desire to protect athletes' health and the long-term integrity

Within the last forty years, the use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDS) has massively increased and has become a very controversial topic of discussion. The question, “should an athlete’s accomplishments be disregarded if he/she uses PEDS?” is being asked frequently and is a problem many sporting leagues are having to deal with. The answer is simple, yes, an athletes accomplishments should be disregarded if he/she uses PEDS because it gives them an unfair advantage, is associated with many health risks, and as role models to teen athletes it sets a bad example for them to follow.
