I enjoy helping the people I care about. When they have problems, they always come to me. I started to watch a show that my mother watched. As I was watching, a woman was helping a man who was suicidal and had mental issues. I wondered if I could be as good of a counselor as she. From that point I wanted to be a mental health counselor. I have loved helping people since I was in the seventh grade. I thought that this career would be good for me because since I love helping people who have problems, why not follow a career I love to do. I like helping people when they have problems and I like giving them advice as they need it.
One of the occupations that immediately caught my eye was “Mental Health Counselors”. Mental Health Counselors work with and help individuals

Social work by definition means, “any work or service carried out by trained personnel with the aim of alleviating the conditions of those in need of help or welfare”. There are several aspects in my life that motivate me to be a social worker and to perform social work. My uncle motivates me to do social work because he was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a brain disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. His diagnoses enlightened my entire family on how mental disorders can affect a person. It took a mental health social worker to give my uncle the appropriate diagnoses and an attainable plan for the future. This encourages me to do the same for other families.
Case management, post-discharge, is an integral part of working with clients who suffer from severe mental illnesses. Post-discharge is when the real opportunity to recover begins. Being able to recover and learn how to cope, is a very real option for those who struggle with mental illness if they have the proper supports and plans in place. Recovery can be defined in social work, as the clients new found, self-defined success within the community (Kondrat &Early, 2010). It is therefore, our job as social workers, to create and develop post-discharge plans for our clients that will help them strive and learn how to navigate their communities successfully, while living with a mental illness. This paper will examine the importance of case management

The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the views of becoming a mental health counselor. Although there are many professions to choose from, I decided a mental health counselor with a specialized area in women’s health and domestic violence is my true calling. Tiffany Rush-Wilson Ph. D. stated, “That if we are in this field is because we have a true passion and the seed to do this type of work” (Laureate, 2012). Over the last few decades changes in need for mental and behavioral health services have become more prevalent (Angermeyer, Matschinger, & Schomerus, 2013). Americans underutilize mental health services due to the following: absent awareness in lower social economic communities, poverty, inadequate funding for mental health services; lack of collaboration and coordination among primary care, mental health providers, access barriers; stigma surrounding mental illness and treatment; denial of problems; and
Over the past one and half month, the class of PDE 502 (Counselling and Career Education) has taught me some major lessons for life in dealing with the clients in response to their emotional needs. The role of a counsellor is not unlike that of a friend where by it is nurtured by being in each other’s company, talking over everyday issues and sharing feelings. However, what sets a counsellor apart is their experience and the ability to apply counselling theories and techniques to assist people in gaining awareness, insight and explore ways of solving their own issues.
