This assignment will critically discuss the role of a mentor when assessing student accurately. Supporting, assessing, teaching, accountability and the barriers which hinder the accurate assessment will be discussed. A mentor is someone who can assess, teach, support and facilitate the learning needs of a student in a clinical placement (NMC 2008). There are so many roles of a mentor assessing, adviser, role model, problem solver, teacher, support, organiser and planner. Mentors have the responsibility of assessing students accurately by establishing effective working relationships, facilitating learning environment, accountable and assessment (NMC 2008).
The ethics of one-on-one mentoring involves how the mentoring expectations are formulated and performed. Working in a mentoring atmosphere can be as important as the availability of one-on-one help. Group leaders, from department chairs to research directors, have an ethical obligation to create an environment that supports fair treatment and professional development opportunities for all group members. With such broad ethical responsibility, mentoring issues can intermixed with issues of bias, health and safety, and maintaining the intrinsic ethical standards of the discipline. Hansford et al. (2003) found many beneficial outcomes in his research, the most frequently cited were collaboration and networking. Other related benefits includes personal satisfaction, career advancements and enjoyment and challenge at work for both mentor and mentees. In this fast pace of competition, organization are developing different strategies to reach their employees full potential.
An atmosphere of trust and mutuality must be established to allow the mentor and student become more acquainted with each other (Byington, 2010). This should be initiated with a ‘getting-to-know-you’ session. The mentor should greet the mentee amicably and help the student recognise their professional aims and needs. The mentor should also take the chance to learn about the student 's educational upbringing and experience, and impart information regarding their own background and expertise. The mentor can then continue to foster upon the student’s strong points, goals, and needs during the mentoring period (Byington, 2010).
These coaching styles will also allow me to build rapport with James while making it easy for him to trust me as his new manager. The style sill also allows me to be able to focus on what issues James could be having that could be affecting his performance in the workplace. James also has a reputation of playing hard and now working hard at the workplace as would be expected of him and the use of the amiable coaching style will also help him learn how to care for the business and their colleagues. While using the style I will be able to help James find a way of prioritizing his relationships and responsibilities at work. The focus on relationships will help James become a better team player and collaborate better with the rest of the team members (Starr, 2017).
Question 1: In the six styles of leadership, I think Christopher Yim is influenced by many styles, but the two most prominent styles are democratic and people-oriented. Following the descriptions of democratic are “consultative style by nature, effiective in developing individual and team skills, promotes involvement and engagement” ( BUV’s BUVBS161 Notes on Google Drive). I think this style is very suitable for Christopher Yim because he is a leader who communicates able person, he delegates to his employees and he always helps to share his experiences and skills. I feel that Yim is a good leader who receive concensus from employees because they feel commitment to the job of Yim so they always try their best to achieve best results. The style of leadership that Christopher Yim represents most is people-oriented style.
Nevertheless, as related in Aetna’s case, the old culture can be shifted to a new one which is more favourable to both the company and the employees. Moreover, in terms of leadership, Google Inc. accepts undergraduates that are competent to do the tasks given to them. These employees can even become leaders as long as they are effective and innovative enough to manage their own teams. This is why the company formulated eight important traits as a guide for young leaders who have lesser experiences in managing. The eight character traits that a manager should have like being an effective coach, empowering employees, getting to know employees, being a good communicator, being productive, helping employees with career development, being goal-oriented and mastering technical skills are important factors for Google’s success.
Most of the employees gain different information through this program like personal development, increased confidence and new skills. It is very important to keep a good relationship with your mentor which can give you a chance to learn better and sharing experiences with your mentor. All of the employees agree that the mentoring program meet there needs and expectations. Which mean that the mentoring is a useful program to each sector to achieve excellent service, increase staff satisfaction. The employees give some suggestions to improve the mentoring program like improving the patience of mentor ,develop mutual trust and respect, the mentor should providing support for mentees and guide them without any criticism and solving problems
