The purpose of this paper will be to present a detailed analyzation of a newspaper article found on The Toronto Star website, titled: "Las Vegas gunman researched SWAT tactics, carefully planned out attack - but motive is a mystery: police" written by Ken Ritter. A major observation I made in this article is the attempt at instilling shock into the public in order to incite fear. This observation was made by assessing the signs, metaphors, and the overall format of the article and the manner of which is was written. There are many signs in this article that serve their purpose of inciting fear and shock in the public reader. The denotation of this flag in the photo is the fact that the mass shooting happened in the United States. The connotation of this flag however is more complex. It signifies the "American-ness" of this situation. The Las Vegas mass shooting is one of many mass shootings have happened in the United States. The presence of this flag, combined with the title of this article and Lombardo 's somber expression strikes a sense of hopelessness to the viewer in the American government and legal authority because of their apparent and obvious inability to prevent mass attacks like this from happening time and time …show more content…

The title of the article itself ("…motive is a mystery: police") headlines that the police, who represent the authority that brings order and justice to the people, have no inclination as to what the reason for the attack was. This authority-to-people central format continues throughout the article in the form of a large photo of Clark County Sherriff Joe Lombardo, who as discussed previously, carries a forlorn expression of doubt and negativity representing the police unable to appease the public with an explanation.
