With the rise of the “ice epidemic” and media accounts of the terrible impacts of methamphetamine, its legitimate medical uses has been relegated to the background. Methamphetamine is highly addictive and affects the central nervous system, (NIDA, 2013). The drug is classified as a Schedule 8 or dangerous drug of addiction (DDA) in Australia due to its high potential for abuse. It is only available through a doctor’s prescription in America (Medical News Today, 2014). Thus, this essay will investigate whether methamphetamine should be used to treat obesity using the medicine, desoxyn.

The transporter molecule, known as dopamine active transporter (DAT), which usually transports dopamine or norepinephrine, carries the methamphetamine to the nerve cell terminals (NIH, 2009). The methamphetamine causes an increased release of the neurotransmitters (dopamine or norepinephrine) in the brain (Macalester, 2008). The methamphetamine however blocks the reuptake of the dopamine because the drug alters the DAT by making it reverse instead of transporting the chemical back to the presynaptic neuron, (NIH, 2009). As shown in figure 1 the methamphetamine travels its way to the dopamine receptor on a vesicle and blocks up the dopamine transporter (NIH,2009). As an increased level of dopamine reaches and builds up on the postsynaptic neuron the person feels a sensation of euphoria for a short amount of time, (Medical News Today, 2014). The postsynaptic neuron is responsible for receiving neural information from the presynaptic neuron and determining whether the information is valuable to send to other neurons or send back to presynaptic neuron (NIH,2009).
As the euphoric effects mentioned above are the blame for the misuse, addiction and physical and psychological side-effects, the molecule has medical purposes. Methamphetamine is

Desoxyn has proven efficacy in elevating the mood as well as suppressing the appetite in obese people allowing them to achieve their weight loss goals, (PDR health, 2015). Patients prescribed this medicine may experience depression due to their weight and failed weight-loss treatments, thus desoxyn can be a key advantage for them because it reduces weight, elevates the mood, increases attention and motivation. Desoxyn has been shown to cause more weight loss when taken alongside a dietary management, compared to people taking a dietary management alone (PDR, 2015). This evidence demonstrates that the medicine is most effective when taken alongside a dietary management
Pt. reported that he wants to get up early and meditate and exercise. Pt. explained wanting to improve his health by taking herbal medicines. Pt. shared how he believes that pharmaceutical companies don’t want people to know about other alternative to combat addiction and improve health. Pt. indicated that his current dosage of methadone is 5 mg and he is experiencing minimal withdraw symptoms. Counselor explained how unfilled time, an unoccupied mind can act as triggers, who is going to give him advices and talk to him when needed and told his to reflect on it.
As previously mentioned above, Narcotics Anonymous is a support group where individuals who are addicted to drug using can go into recovery with the help of others to cleanse themselves mentally, physically, and emotionally from drugs. The support group accepts individuals who are looking to stop their use of any illegal drugs, substance use, and alcohol consumption. An individual(s) with a problem with alcohol and substance use is viewed as an illness, based on the severity of use, and its affects it does to an individual. Alcohol and substance use can start at any age from adolescent to older adult age. An onset of alcohol and substance use can be known when/if there is an indication of it from an individual’s family history, and/or family
Methadone exists as two enantiomeric forms, R and S (Eap et al., 2002). The most commonly used form of methadone in maintenance treatment is the racemic mixture (RS- methadone) (Groman et al., 1997). It is the R-isoform that gives most of the opioid effects (Eap et al., 2002). Methadone exerts its analgesic and narcotic effects through the µ-OR subtype, and has antagonistic effect at the NMDA receptor (Trescot et al., 2008). The antagonistic effect at the NMDA receptor is believed to be advantageous in preventing induction of tolerance (Callahan et al., 2004).
I personally am against the use of methadone because it does not stop addicts from continuing to do drugs while going through methadone treatment and it lacks the evidence of it actually working. Firstly, I am going to explain what methadone treatment is. Secondly,
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention along with Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and Department of Health and Human Resources (2007), characteristics of methadone and other opioid drug overdose decedent’s; sex: in males, methadone 70.1%, opioid 66.3%; in females, methadone 29.9%, opioid 33.7% ages range 18-45 years. Furthermore, epidemic is a reflection of the long-term stagnation of
According to “DrugAbuse.gov,”meth is an extremely addictive stimulant drug; it is chemically similar to amphetamine. Meth is a drug that can be taken by injecting it using a needle, snorting it, smoking it, orally, and dissolving it into a drink. It takes the form of a white, odorless, bitter tasting, crystallizing powder. Methamphetamine is not the only name, it is also called, chalk, ice, crystal, glass, crank, and speed. Meth is also known as a “club drug” because of the stamina it gives to the users.
Case declares, “I’m a drug addict, Cath. Stimulants. Central nervous systems stimulants. Extremely powerful central system stimulants.” (Gibson 129-130)
Methamphetamine is a illegal drug it falls in the same class as cocaine. Crystal meth is used by all ages but it mostly as a club drug. Methamphetamine came from Japan in the 1919. It went to use in world war 2 both sides used it to stay awake. Before a pilot was to do their suicide
Both drugs are stimulants so they stimulate the individual and create an euphoric high, as a result of the way both drugs elevate the dopamine levels in the brain. Stimulants such as cocaine and meth cause the user to be more active, talkative, alert, less tired, exhilarated, etc. This essay will talk about each drug signs and symptoms treatment nursing management for drug abuse. Cocaine is an extremely addictive and poisonous drug and is a central nervous system stimulant (Miller-Keane).
Once this drug is abruptly stopped, the brain slows dopamine production resulting in undesirable side effects while the chemical slowly regulates
This is almost the same high a powder cocaine user experiences, but bigger increments of dopamine are released. The addiction of crack comes from the brain because dopamine is a type of reward system for the brain that provides the brain with pleasure. The center for substance abuse research states, “After having tried Crack Cocaine, the user will rapidly develop an intense craving for the drug since the chemistry of the brain’s reward system has been altered” (Ceaser). The human body also becomes tolerant of this drug. In most cases in life this tolerance is a good thing, but when it comes to using drugs in order to get high it can be very deadly.
We have been fighting drug abuse for almost a century. The war on drugs is a growing problem in America everyday. This war is becoming an unfortunate loss. Our courts, hospitals, and prisons are continuously being filled with drug abusers. Violent crime the ravages our neighborhood is a result of the drug trade.
Drugs are substances that trigger temporary changes in the body which may result in such a pleasurable and relaxing effect. Some of the types can slow down the nervous system’s action, while other types can have the exact opposite effect; spurring the nervous system into rapid action. Drugs are connected to cravings or addiction since a person’s body starts yearning for drugs after he or she has taken it for a while. Drugs affect consciousness significantly! They may cause people to hear or see things that aren’t real (hallucinations), experiencing mood swings, or may even distort people’s perceptions.
Drug Addiction : Treatment or Punishment? When a person takes a drug the chemicals affect the brain by interfering with how the neurons send messages. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the structure of Marijuana and Heroin mimic a natural neurotransmitter which tricks the receptors into allowing the drug to activate neurons inside the brain which interferes with messages and leads to abnormalities of behavior. With other drugs such as cocaine there is an abnormally large amount of neurotransmitters released which disrupts communication channels.
All these characteristics led to the conclusion that drug addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use. It is considered as a brain disease because drugs change the structure of the brain, and how it works. Every drug affects different systems of the brain. For example, in the case of cocaine, as the brain is adapted in the presence of the specific drug, brain regions responsible for judgment, decision-making, learning, and memory begin to physically change, making certain behaviors “hard-wired.” In some brain regions, connections between neurons are pruned back.
