ISSUES AND SUGGESTIONS

1. Issue: Anticipation
Students rely too much on systemic knowledge and remain passive throughout reading process, trying to make sense of the text as they read carefully word for word.
Solution: Teachers need to make students consciously aware of the skills they normally use when reading in L1 and activate their schematic knowledge. Learners should be encouraged to make guesses and hypotheses around the topic, genre or purpose of the text, expectations that will be confirmed or corrected as they read.
Suggestion: Students should be encouraged to use linguistic and non-linguistic information e.g. think about or trace key words from headings or subheadings, read questions about topic or type of text or even create …show more content…
