CONCEPT 6: METHODS OF MOTIVATION IN NURSING PROFESSION
This concept is derived from Block 2, Module 6 which is entitled as ‘Organizing’. In Encyclopedia of management, Motivation refers to the degree of readiness of an organization to pursue some designed goal and implies the determination of the nature and locus of forces inducing the degree of readiness. Motivation is very important in an organization because it plays great roles in achieving the goal of the organization.

Motivation remains one of the problems the nurses face in healthcare systems today. Some healthcare organization which could not motivate their staff faces challenges like shortage of nursing staff, delay in services etc. When a nurse staff is not appreciated or properly motivated, the zeal to care for the people is low and he/she will not be happy because she haven’t achieved her aim of the practice. Research proves that a motivated and productive employee experiences meaningfulness of the work done and has high levels of knowledge of the results of the work performed (Hackman, 1976). Some ways to motivate the nursing staff include adequate trainings, offering good pay, good communication and relationship with the superiors, good working conditions, job rotation, etc. These listed measures will lead to job satisfaction among nursing staff. As a result of this, the nurses work earnestly in taking care of the patients that visit the hospital. Motivation plays great roles in achieving the set goals and enhancing productivity of the hospital. The techniques use in motivating the nursing staff include; recognizing and appreciating their great efforts in patients’ care, conducting trainings for the nurses and helping them to renew their licenses, ensuring that the sick staff are exempted from work to avoid breakdown, increasing their salaries for overtime work done etc. with these motivating methods, the nursing staff perform their roles in more efficient way which achieve goals in less
