1.1 Background of the study Transportation plays very key part in the development of a country. The economic and social development of a country is dependent on their transportation system. The growth and development of any economy largely depends upon the efficient and effective movement of people, goods and services and hence the role of an efficient transports towards this objective could not be downplayed (Ofori-Dwumfuo and Dankwa, 2011). Mass transport in developing countries is important for the urban poor who have to rely on walking, cycling, and road-based public transport to meet most of their travel needs. Therefore, it is inconceivable how a country could trifle with it without causing harm to the development of the country. Road …show more content…
Similarly, City Express Services (CES) was embattled with corruption, which led to its demise. The government of Ghana, undaunted by these challenges, proceeded to establish the Metro Mass Transit Company Ltd., which though infested with many hindrances similar to those of the erstwhile transport companies, has survived up-to-date. The Metro Mass Transit Co. Ltd. (MMT) was established to provide efficient urban mass transport system in the country. Subsequent to its inception, MMT has contributed immensely to the transport industry in the country. Its contribution to the transport needs of urban and rural dwellers at reasonable fares, is satisfactory, thus making it possible for many people to get to the various markets centres with their goods and services. MMT bus services has been very helpful to worker who, for one reason or the other are unable to acquire accommodation at their duty stations by commuting them daily to and from work, while school children in uniform who, previously did not have any access to education are now able to attend distant schools due to MMT bus …show more content…
Until now, the country had boasted of a very active public transport system that served all parts of the country. State Transport Corporation (STC) and other transport companies served commuters in both cities and rural communities. CES, OSA and STC collapsed largely because of malpractices which undermined the revenue generation of the companies. The Metro Mass Transit CO. Ltd. (MMT) that filled the vacuum, albeit with a lot of challenges is also on the verge of collapse. In a meeting with bus inspectors of the company at Kumasi, the Managing Director of MMT, painted a picture of gloom and doom in 2014. The company generated a revenue of GHȼ14million in 2012 which fell to GHȼ9million in 2013 irrespective of the increase in the fleet of buses from 846 to 1046 (www.gbcghana.com). The collapse of the public transport sector could reduce and/or increase cost of the rate of movement of goods and people and hence commercial activities in the country. Such effect could reduce the economic growth of the country. It is against this backdrop that the current study seeks to investigate the challenges of State Mass Transport in
The claim is often made that a conspiracy of General Motors, Standard Oil, Firestone Tires, et al killed off a thriving rail mass-transit system in Los Angeles. This is a myth. A brief version of why this is a myth is contained in a letter to the editor I wrote that was published in the Los Angeles Times. Read on for the full story.
The skies are grey, it’s freezing, and everything is covered by ash, this is reality now. Cormac McCarthy, playwright, screenwriter and the author of The Road, gives us a glimpse of the struggle of living in a catastrophe world. The story of The Road, is about the hardship between a father and son living in an apocalyptic wasteland. Throughout the story we see how differently the father and son act in the situation they encounter.
Have you imagined how the post-apocalyptic world will look like and will you choose try hard to survive or to die? In the book, The Road, written by McCarthy, the sky is dark. It’s cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. Everything has gone, only except some human beings who try every way to survive even by hurting and killing people.
Some would say “Life on the road is suited for everyone”, others such as for myself, would disagree. Life on the road is not suited for everyone, because not everyone can throw away their normal life and go on the road or the wilderness and survive like Chris McCandless. Some would think, Chris McCandless, was on a suicide mission but he was only following his dreams and he actually did, unlike many people. Chris McCandless inspired so many people to move out, leave their old lives, and have a fresh start at their life. Chris McCandless was a independent person and he was trying to get away from civilization because he felt like he never fit into it.
The US went through revolutionary advancements in transportation from 1800 to 1840. The transportation improvements had substantial effects on the economy and also individual development. People could now buy goods that were made in places faraway because access was easier to towns and cities and people’s experiences grew as they were able to be more mobile (309). The roads were inadequate in 1800, so the federal government funded the National Road in 1808 to establish its dedication to improve the roads in the nation and so then by 1839 the East and West would be tied together (309). Commerce was still inadequate even with the National Road funded which improved transportation.
The Road, written by Cormac McCarthy, is a novel that follows the journey of a father and son traveling south to escape the post-apocalyptic scene they were unfortunately put in. The father and son are survivors of some unnamed disaster that has occurred. As time passes by there is less and less food. There is also a lack of plants and animals. Other than scavenging for food, the only means of survival for some is cannibalism.
In Cormac Mccarthy's novel, The Road, the overall outlook on humanity and life is negative. Death, fear, and sadness consumes humans lives. Mccarthy mainly writes about how darkness has taken over in this apocalyptic world in The Road. The apocalypse has unrooted many humans making them live in harsh ways, even turning them into cannibalistic animals. Some events make the father and son live in fear.
While providing significant positive environmental effects, the idea of the large tech companies bussing their employees creates some negative externalities. The idea of bussing has become problematic in the Bay Area. Many of the employees want to live in the city and work in the bay. So the companies offer free buses to transport employers from the city to the Bay. The buses can be extremely loud and travel on roads/have stops serviced by San Francisco’s Muni buses.
During a poetry unit, many high school students have read the words, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood.” These are the opening lines to “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, a famous poem included in his collection Mountain Interval. The poem starts with the narrator walking in the woods and seeing two roads split from each other. He has to decide which road to take since this decision will forever shape him as a person. The speaker must recognize what can be gained and lost by each individual road and the choice to follow it.

‘Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening,’ ‘Birches,’ and ‘Mowing’” (Rukhaya). The woods can also dually represent self-reliance and nonconformity. By acknowledging his choice in the woods alone, the traveler shows that he is willing to “oppose social norms” (Rukhaya) and rely on his own instinct to come to a decision. As an extended metaphor for choice, it makes sense that the roads represent the journey of life and decision. There are two roads, two choices, and two representations of decision.
An introduction to highway building: Although there are many methods to constructing a road, all are based on the principle that geographical objects are removed and replaced with harder and more wear-resistant materials. The pre-existing rock and earth is removed by digging or explosions. Tunnels, embankments and bridge are then added when necessary. The material that the road is being constructed from is then laid by various pieces of equipment, which will be looked at in greater detail in this assignment. The construction management of roads has become increasingly more difficult as larger structures are constantly being required in increasingly short amounts of time.
