On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown, an unarmed eighteen year old black male was shot and killed six times by Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darrin Wilson. A witness says Michael Brown was raising his hands to surrender when the officer shot him. Authorities say Michael Brown physically assaulted the officer by pushing him back into his car and tried to steal his gun. The Ferguson police cars were not armed with cameras, so they cannot tell whose side of the story is accurate. When the public found out that Michael Brown was unarmed and supposedly trying to surrender, it brought chaos to the St. Louis suburb where the shooting happened, causing protests, riots, and national attention. In order to get to the bottom of the case and to discover what really happened, Federal Civil Rights Investigators and the FBI were brought in, it is now in their hands. On August 11, what started out as a protest for the killing of Michael Brown turned into a violent riot where a convenient store was burned to the ground. On August 19th, Kajieme Powell was shot twelve times and killed. Kajieme Powell, a twenty-five year old black male was suspected of robbing a convenient store and of having a weapon, so the police officer shot. Luckily, a witness caught the whole thing on tape and the disturbing video is now on Youtube. This is the second incident in the past few weeks around the St. Louis surrounding area that a young black male was killed after being suspected of a minor crimes (jaywalking in Michael Brown’s case and shoplifting in Jajieme Powell’s case). Prior to the altercation between Wilson and Brown, Michael had robbed a Ferguson market, and had forcefully shoved the clerk making it robbery (robbery is considered theft with the threat of violence or a weapon). Michael had been with his friend Dorian Johnson who knew of the incident. Officer Wilson was driving around the suburbs of St. Louis when he ordered the two men off the street and onto the sidewalk from his car.
I chose to write on an incident that occurred on Feb 26, 20102, in Sanford, Florida. George Zimmerman a 28 year old mixed Hispanic male shot and killed Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman was a volunteer neighborhood watch coordinator, in a gated community in Florida. While on duty, Zimmermann had a concealed weapon and carried a 9mm pistol. (Zimmerman did have a legal permit).

The jury’s verdict towards Officer Wilson was not brutal because he should have gotten life in prison since Michael Brown had his hands up before shots were fired, even though Officer Wilson was attacked it is always the last resort to fire at a human being, and the bias of the jury effected the results of the verdict. At 11:54 a.m., Michael Brown and Dorian Johnson stole a few cigarillos from the Ferguson Market and Liquor store according to a surveillance video. But, what are the reasons that are leading to this crisis? Is it because of race? To take a posture in this situation is difficult because there is not enough information released and the judicial process of these cases are mostly carried out in secret by the police.

Both suspects were unarmed and harmless so ending their lives was an action that shouldn’t have happened. Michael Brown was facing the police officer to basically surrender when he was shot 12 times. Brown’s friend that was present when his death happened told MSNBC, “The officer came up to us and told us to “get the **** on the sidewalk” and then threatened us by saying “I’m going to shoot you.” (Johnson, NBC News). This is a prime example of police brutality and excessive use of violence.
