This academic quarter has taught me more about viewing and understanding the identity, history, and culture of the United States through specific keywords. These terms were intended for us to see past the simple black and white use of the word, but how it connects to suppression or reformation within the United States. I decided to focus on two specific terms that I believe have had a strong presence in the United States: the “sambo” and gender. When first writing about the concept of a “sambo,” I really did not develop my idea all the way because within my original blog my TA pointed out I had this idea that needed to be improve. Now through this writing process the concept of the “sambo” has a different meaning and notion that I ignored the …show more content…
Michael Parenti’s essay, “Institutions and Ideologies,” demonstrates how these ideologies are literally “a way of life, a glorification” (557). Parenti is trying to convey how over time these ideologies become a natural routine to us. With this routine of ideologies, it becomes glorifying since we continue to practice and live hegemonic ideals. Parenti discusses how ideologies are socially constructed and implemented, and how these social practices become a form of living. This has turned to repetitive living and demonstrate how these ideologies have been used to justify why certain groups are treated this way because the majority view this a way to ensure that they will always maintain control in society. A group wanting to challenge this hierarchy of living will force the privilege to go to any lengths for this “hierarchy’s preservation and hostile toward demands for more equitable social order” (557). This explicitly details how the privilege are trying to be maintain this hierarchy from being reformed and altered. In the event that is does they have to take action because if not this ideology that they live by will be changed. If change is successful, it can lead to the construction of new ideas that see another group more dominate than the other. These ideologies can have an influence within institutions especially those of high power such as universities, government, and media. These ideologies influence the decision making of these institutions allowing for these institutions to suppress the voices of many seeking reform to the ideologies being oppressed within their daily
Ethnicity, age, physical ability, religion, political ideology, sexual identity are all factors that influence privilege. We also can't forget however, that all these conditions are different from each other. The advantages associated with them should not be expected to be the same. Males have different advantages than females. Young people have different advantages than rich people.
The Collectivist Pledge Anthem by Ayn Rand tells a tale of a young man, who finds himself in a collectivist society, where the individual is effaced, and replaced with the facade of a perfect whole. Rulers of these oppressive and marxist states unravel the entire concept of “ego” through guilt and the institution of false gratitude, and this method of control remains relevant today through similar societies as seen in Anthem. Ayn Rand has taken my perception of these ideals and societies and has entirely stretched it to the far side of the spectrum of political identities in order to expose me to a often overlooked reality a reality of control and positively interpreted ignorance. Ayn Rand’s depiction of a restrictive collectivist society
Upon this realization, Equality denounces the leaders of his society, the Council, on moral terms. “I” believe that his decision to do so is correct as the people in Equality’s society are stripped of their right, and intellectuals are responsible for furthering their society. Equality’s actions parallels
Governmental power is often held by a few, and this also leads to problems as citizens feel that their voices are not being heard. This inequality is not seen only between people and the government, but also different groups of citizens today (gender, race,
The stigma against rebellion discourages people from fighting for change in their society. With this, the government continues to run under an unjust system with corrupt
The urge for freedom will eventually come… Something within him has reminded him of his birthright freedom; something without has reminded him that he can find it.” (MLK, 584). This quote shows the impact that external systems and structures has on the internal struggle for self-determination. One cannot go about changing the external systems and structures, without overcoming the beliefs that those structures put in the oppressed groups head about themself. This shows that the external struggle comes first and plays a deep roll in the manifestation of the internal struggle.
These fallacies serve to justify their existence. They also maintain it as well, yet not very well. The fallacies also provide the basis for which Equality could escape and eventually dismantle their society. As the reader can see, this essay has provided a thorough overview of the collectivist society in Anthem, its creation, maintenance, and flaws, one can only hope that it will be enough to stop one from
Jamie Johnson created the documentary film "Born Rich" with the help of other members of affluent families to discuss the privileges of aristocracy. Aristocracy is a privileged, primarily hereditary ruling class, or a form of government controlled by such an elite. The viewer can understand the role of this status group, see the similarities as well as differences we share, and are able to relate. I do not believe all members of society are comfortable with the system of stratification, but we understand the roles that one plays.
“Ideology is a specious way of relating to the world. It offers human beings the illusion of an identity, of dignity, and of morality while making it easier for them to part with them… It is a veil behind which human beings can hide their own ‘fallen existence’, their trivialization, and their adaptation to the status quo.” The ideology and its slogans are meant to be not only the signs if the regime but also its assurance to unite people in one order and keep them in this way. The metaphysical order ensures the system to exists in a
Privilege gives power that accrue members of a dominant group, oppressing the marginalized group. It pushes the dominant people up, while oppressing the minors. Oppression can be prejudicing and/or discriminating a certain group who are below the privilege people. Additionally, intersectionality can play a role between privilege and oppression. Intersectionality privileges a certain race, identity, or sex, but belittles the opposite of race, identity, or sex.
All over the world, people are forced to operate in a system of unequal distribution of power, wealth, and health. Structural power undermines the physical and psychological well-being of the people, through poverty, illness, premature death, environmental destruction, and repression (Haviland, 2010, p. xx). The disciplinary domain is the home of oppression, consisting of policy-making. The group over policy-making controls human behavior.
The use of indoctrination and the suppression of certain words demonstrate the leaders' attempts to control the minds of their citizens and to erase the idea of individualism from their
This shows us an example of the extensive censorship in their society. Explaining how in their society they limit the amount of perspectives provided to the public. Further conveying their belief that giving people limited opinions and perspectives is the way to prevent unhappiness and debate. This does not allow people to properly form opinions and severely limits the knowledge of the public.
This trouble is rooted in a legacy we all inherited, and while we’re here, it belongs to us (Johnson p.12). People rarely talk about power and privilege because talking openly about it isn’t easy. This keeps us from looking at what’s going on and what makes it impossible to do anything about it. People are naturally afraid of what they do not know.
Privileges are granted because others respects or fears the individual and are willing to allow them to have special rights. “Knowledge is power” – Francis Bacon Knowledge gives people the feeling of superiority and confidence. When knowing something others don’t, people feel
