Michelangelo Michelangelo lived a very long and eventful life. He had a fairly rough childhood and a spent most of his life as a lonely artist. He was very difficult to get along with and had few friends. He once got into a fight with a disputing artist, and as a result, he suffered a broken nose (Krull 17). He did not have many personal friends. Despite not being well liked, Michelangelo was a fantastic artist. As a child, Michelangelo was not well liked by his family. He was born in a small village. He was raised during the Renaissance in Florence (Great Artists; Richmond 8). Part of the reason why he did not get along with his family is because he had a strong interest in art and his family did not support him. During school, he would sneak away to go paint. He was abused by his father, and most of his family taunted him (Great Artists). When he was thirteen, he finally convinced his father to let him take an art class. However, he later quit because he wanted to pursue sculpting (Richmond 11-13). As well as in his early life, he was also not well liked during adulthood. He had more enemies than friends. He never got along with anyone. He would be in constant disagreement with critics and other artists. He once painted a picture of a critic being eaten by a snake. People from all around wanted him to create sculptures or paint for them. He sculpted one of his most famous creations, David, for a political leader in Florence. Although he excelled in both, he saw himself as a sculptor rather than a painter. It took him four years to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. He also carved the Pieta for a tomb chapel. The statue was so good that people did not believe he was the sculptor. He snuck into the chapel at night, and carved his name into the statue (Richmond 16-27).
