Microorganisms are very useful. It shapes much of our environment by their metabolic activities and its reactions are essential to life on Earth. The beneficial microbes can be applied in various industries. For the example, microbes are taking part in food industry, medical and so forth. Moreover, microorganisms are very familiar in food production. The characteristic flavors, aromas, and consistencies of such foods are made by microbes during fermentation. Besides giving taste and aroma, microbial metabolism also acts as a preservative, destroys many pathogenic microbes and toxins and it also able to add nutritional value in the form of vitamins or other nutrients. Fermentation is the partial oxidation of sugar or other metabolites to release energy using an organic molecule from within the cell as an electron acceptor. At the end of the process, carbon dioxide, lactic acid and ethanol are formed as the products. Variety of fermentation products can be produce by microorganisms, but it based on the enzymes and substrate that available to each. Fermented vegetables is one of the example that using fermentation process. The bacteria such as Lactobacillus or Lactococcus, Streptococcus, and Leuconostoc are produced lactic acid during fermentation. Hence, the …show more content…
Alcoholic fermentation is the process by which various microorganisms convert simple sugars such as glucose into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Alcohol and carbon dioxide take on different importance of different foods and beverages. In the production of vinegar, ethanol is getting from the fermentation of a fruit, grain or vegetable before it further oxidized to acetic acid. Acetobacter or Gluconobacter generates 4% acetic acid when perform this secondary metabolic conversion. The flavors of vinegar are depends on the starting material. For the example, Cider vinegar is made from
Bacteria are living things that have only one cell. Under a microscope, they look like balls, rods, or spirals. Many are helpful. Some bacteria help to digest food, destroy disease-causing cells, and give the body needed vitamins. Bacteria are also used in making healthy foods like yogurt.
The author starts by explaining the human microbiome and the research on it. For many years, biologists thought that the human body was able to perform all of its important functions by itself. However, in the past decade, they have found that the human body contains trillions of microorganisms that help with these important processes. In fact, they outnumber human cell 10 to one. At first, microbe research was only focused on harmful pathogens, but recently, biologists have figured out what the most common bacteria in the human body are, and have been trying to figure out the specific functions of theses microorganisms.
These microorganisms are used to teach us how multicellular organisms came to be and how they can survive today. These small, microscopic organisms are so unique that the identification of them is paramount in the advancements of science. Knowing the chemical makeup, the shape, and the biochemical processes is important in identifying these organisms to understand how they survive and where. A number of tests can be ran on an unknown bacteria to determine their ideal
Introduction Our world is composed of many bacteria’s’ that can either help or destroy us. Therefore, its’s imperative to learn and study them. The purpose of the lab was to put into action the methods that have been learned in the laboratory to determine our unknown bacteria. Bacteria’s can have different features, shapes, and or arrangements that help microbiologist determined their role in our life (whether they are good or bad for humans).
Do you suspect that you have black mold in your Los Angeles home? Black mold is most commonly a greenish black color. In most cases, you can tell right away whether or not the mold in your home is black mold or not. While it is always advised that you get mold removed and taken care of, there are some types of mold that you should have removed right away. One of those types of mold is black mold.
Honey, is a very concentrated sugar solution with a high osmotic pressure, making impossible the growth of any microorganisms. It contains fewer microorganisms than other natural food; especially there are no dangerous Bacillus species. Honey contains Bacillus bacteria, causing the dangerous bee pests, but these are not toxic to humans. That is why, to prevent bee pests, honey should not be disposed in open places, where it can easily be accessed by bees. However, some bacteria are present in honey, most of them being harmless to man.
Being able to identify unknown microbes from systematic testing is what makes the field of microbiology so important, especially in infectious disease control. Using the testing procedure laid out by the microbiology field we are able to identify unknown bacteria present in our everyday lives, and along the way learn a lot about their characteristics that separate them from other types of bacteria. Being able to do this is vital in order for us to understand why microbes are present in certain places, how they are able to grow and what restricts their growth, that way they can be combatted if necessary. These techniques for determining unknowns are also important for isolating and testing infectious disease microbes in order to prevent spreading. Another important aspect of being able to identify unknown microbes is the
There are several reactions occur when there is plenty of oxygen present. Then the energy released is used by the yeast for growth and activity. However, when the oxygen supply is limited, the yeast can only partially breakdown the sugar. Alcohol and carbon dioxide are produced in this process known as alcoholic fermentation. The fermentation occur when the carbon dioxide produced in these reactions.
Title: How Ph Levels Affected the Fermentation of Beer Hypothesis: The beer will be left with more sugar deposit as the Ph levels increase because alpha/beta -amylase will no longer function. Predictions: Alcohol Percentage Analysis for the Control and the Experimental During this experiment, the pH level was increased, therefore Alpha-Amylase was favored. Due to the nature of Alpha-Amylase cutting randomly through a large carbohydrate molecule, it leaves bigger sugars in the flask, which cannot be digested by yeast. Due to this, less reactions should occur in the experimental, therefore leading to a lower percentage of alcohol production, compared to the control.
For example, fermentation occurs in yeast in order to gain energy by transforming sugar into alcohol. Fermentation is also used by bacteria, they convert carbohydrates into lactic acid. Ethanol fermentation is done by yeast and certain bacteria, when pyruvate is separated into ethanol and carbon dioxide. Ethanol fermentation has a net chemical equation: C6H12O6 (glucose) > 2C2H5OH (ethanol) + 2CO2 (carbon dioxide). This process of ethanol fermentation is used in the making of wine, bread, and beer.

Sugar/ glucose is an important carbohydrate that can be made during photosynthesis from water and carbon dioxide, using energy from sunlight. Carbon dioxide is given off as a waste product when energy is released by the breaking down of glucose. This can be used by plant cells in the process of photosynthesis to form new carbohydrates. Yeast is a single-celled fungus that can break down sugars (glucose) to help produce carbon dioxide. Research Question
Joshua Miller 12/18/17 Fermentation Lab report Introduction The term fermentation refers to the chemical breakdown of a substance by bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms, typically involving effervescence and the giving off of heat (wikipedia). Sugars are converted to ethyl alcohol when fermentation happens. In this experiment we determined if yeast cells undergo fermentation when placed in a closed flask with no oxygen. Glucose and yeast are mixed together in a closed flask and allowed to incubate for about one hour.
Usually, the microbial enzymes have various potential uses in industries and medicine. The microbial enzymes are also more reliable than plant and animal enzymes as they are more stable and active. Also the microorganisms demonstrate an alternative source of enzymes because they can be cultured in large quantities in a short time by fermentation and owing to their biochemical diversity and susceptibility to gene manipulation. Industries are looking for new microbial strains in order to produce different enzymes to fulfil the current enzyme
