Middle school is a challenging time in the life of any individual, but this was especially so for me as I moved to the United States from India at the age of twelve. Although it was difficult at first adjusting to not only a new education system, but also an entirely new culture, this experience has taught me to integrate new information in a way that enables me to adapt and succeed when faced with challenges. Furthermore, I belong to a region in India that was colonized by the Portuguese and thus, I am Roman Catholic by religion and Indian by nationality. Hence, diversity has been a constant theme in my life, which was further enhanced by my exposure to people of various nationalities, races, religions, etc. when I came to the United States. …show more content…
To further explore the field of medicine I participated in New Jersey Medical School Premed Honors Program and SMART program for high school students. In these programs I was taught the basics of medicine by medical students and received lectures on several prevalent topics in modern medicine such as cancer, stem-cell research, and health policy by renowned doctors from all over the United States. It was at the end of these courses that I had solidified my decision to pursue a degree in …show more content…
I initiated my experience with research in Dr. Nancy Woychik’s lab where I learned valuable scientific investigative techniques as well as proper lab safety etiquette. Through my work in the lab, I realized the importance medical literature and research to directing the understanding of diseases and techniques to alleviate illnesses for physician. This experience further aided my understanding of the interdependence of medicine and research in discovering better means for improving the quality of care provided by health care professionals. However, my desire to be involved in an independent project led me to transition into Dr. Michael Chikindas’ lab whose subject of research was more aligned with my interests in biochemistry and microbiology. In this lab I have been able to develop a protocol to investigate the role of nature derived molecules and essential oils in inhibiting autoinducer-2, a quorum sensing molecule, in gram positive bacteria using Staphylococcus aureus as a reference organism. Research has been a beneficial experience for me as it has allowed me to apply my knowledge from classes and literature to practical inquiries that enables me to contribute to relevant scientific knowledge. Working with lab mates has further enhanced my ability to efficiently work in a team to successfully accomplish
After this research experience, I hope to have a better understanding of my place in the world of
Ever since grade school, I was passionate about working in the field of medicine, and science. I enjoyed anatomy, medical spelling and terminology, and reading about the healthcare industry. Because of my passion for healthcare, I decided to to attend Health Sciences High. There, I was given the best opportunities, such as, medical internships and college health courses. My plans and goals had turned me into a mature young adult.
Throughout my educational career, I have worked to balance scientific and liberal arts thinking because both are crucial to fully understanding the world. My interest in pursuing this path developed during my high school career, and drove me to apply to Cornell. Upon starting here, I continued pursuing that path, and I want to continue increasing my exposure to these two ways of thought through entry into the Concurrent Major program. By entering this program, I hope to attain degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Government and learn what opportunities emerge from this diverse educational path. When I was in high school, I tried to keep an academic balance between social studies – with classes like AP US Government and AP World History – and the sciences – taking Physics, Chemistry, and Principles of Engineering.
One of the things that first drew me to the University of Georgia was its renowned honors program, and now that I have fallen in love with the university and with Athens, I desire greatly to be a part of this impressive program. If accepted, I hope to benefit from the program’s research and internship opportunities, and boundless connections that which prepare me greatly for graduate school and the work force after UGA. Entering into the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences as a freshman this coming fall, I have an immense fascination with physical and life sciences such as physics, chemistry and biochemistry that I hope to greater explore in my first few semesters on campus. As an upcoming woman of science, I know that I can benefit markedly from the internship and research opportunities that the honors program offers.
From a very young age, I was keenly interested in computers. The world of the computer always caught my attention, and I wanted to seek more knowledge in this particular field. Computers always seem like a mystery to me, I wanted to know how they work and how exactly they perform tasks in few seconds which humans could take more time to complete. This interest never left me, only growing more profound and passionate about every new discovery I made. From communicating with an artificial intelligence to seeing the wonders of the Internet for the first time, computers have left me fascinated with just how much power yet mystery they hold.
Growing up as a kid, I felt as though I didn’t really fit into the lifestyle of my hometown city. My parents worked overtime, my sister had school to deal with, so I didn’t really get the amount of education that I deserved. I was always the type of talkative student that needed to be disciplined in many various ways; I was either ignoring what I was being taught, annoying my fellow classmates, or doing something that I’m not supposed to do. My life processed drastically through my elementary school years, even when it came to a point where I needed to stop slacking and earn the right amount of education that I’ve missed so far. My parents happened to hire a tutor to help me through all the lost amount of subject homework that I’ve postponed so far, to get my grades up in order to promote me to middle school.
Hey what is up graduates of 2022. I'm surprised you made it this far, no I'm just kidding but you are going to be in highschool and that is kinda scary. I have learned a lot from my past and I´ve made some mistakes in the previous grades but I have learned from them and I think we all have. We also had some really good days and times in middle school.
Stephen Covey once said, “Every human has four endowments - self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to change.” This quote speaks to me on a personal level. In life there is always a time every individual is expected to grow into an independent, free human being.
My decision to pursue a career in medicine has not been an easy one. Although I have always admired doctors and surgeons; my final decision and determination has matured in my mind and heart over the past few years. The time I spent at the University of Lancaster was instrumental in my decision. My expanded knowledge in human biology, the biology of health and human disease, and biochemistry has had a strong influence. Further influence comes for the modules that particularly draw my interest i.e. immunology, cancer, pathobiology and medical genetics.
Since I was a child, I always strived to reach my goals and ambitions. As I have gone through my high school, undergraduate, and graduate classes I have encountered many roadblocks and have experienced maturation in my character. Prior to attending my undergraduate institution, I received a full scholarship from the Gates Millennium Scholar Program that was a key factor in facilitating me to reach my goals. Going through my undergraduate studies I searched for ways that will further develop skills that I believe, will aid me as a student and as a physician. I eventually began to shadow a physician, volunteer at a hospital, and joined medical related organizations.
Without a doubt my biggest fear is working extremely hard for something I don’t genuinely want. So the utmost important goal in my mind is the goal to achieve greatness and fulfillment through enjoying my life. High school has been a substantial element that has shaped me the most so far. It’s the time I became more self-aware with what I care about and that what makes me different allows me to thrive. Especially through the experiences I’ve had these last two years of high school I have found things that have given me stronger drive and dedication.
Education today is still widely regarded as the key to success and an investment into one’s future. Some would argue that it depends on the field of study among a plethora of variables including but not limited to hard work, discipline, commitment and having ambition. No matter how we define success, one thing is certain is that knowledge is a key ingredient. Whether gained through formal learning from an academic institution or self-taught in today’s technologically advanced age of information. The knowledge and skills we acquire is vital to achieving success for those not fortunate enough to be born into substantial wealth.
Success is always a personal definition; for some it is through the family’s prosperity, for others it is the depth of the good they do in the world, the list is endless, yet they all have one thing in common, a chosen occupation. My career incentives are not only to be financially successful but enjoy the personal happiness that comes from creating security for my family while helping the world locally and globally. As a college student I am trying to acquire the foresight to create the direction and drive needed to make my dreams a reality. Acutely aware that achieving my financial, familial and worldly goals requires as much information and knowledge as possible from training in and outside of classrooms, I want to take advantage of Columbia’s
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE In the age of globalization, it is essential to have a wide-ranging and distinguished international outlook. I did a lot of research about business course and found that business courses are the most popular courses choice in United Kingdom so I preferred to attain my higher education from United Kingdom. I believe that it is a great place to get vital experience and develop my skills which can be used in my future business activities, such as presenting, working effectively in group, taking vital decisions and also to make new friends.
I was thrilled at the prospect of working in a lab for the very first time. Upon arriving, I was informed that I would be assisting Jyothi, a PhD student, with her research. One of the most rewarding experiences for me was that of meeting an array of intensely passionate people. This helped me learn what I think is an extremely essential life-lesson: It all begins and ends with passion.
