Eight percent. That is the amount that the career of teaching is expected to grow from 2016 to 2026 (Summary). Over the next ten years or so, there is an expected rise in the number of enrolled students, ultimately opening up more positions for teachers. Opportunities for these teachers is going to be endless as there will be a high demand in all school settings. Although there is an expected student rise, the state and government would need to have money in their budget to allow more people to join the profession of teaching. With the concern of the budget for future teachers there is also the possibility for the state to gain more money, leading to additional employment growth for middle school teachers. However, with many teachers soon reaching retirement age, there may also be a dramatic increase in job opportunities for those graduating from college, as the older teachers jobs will need to be replaced. Flexibility is the utmost important thing that a teacher must be, because there are always announcements, assemblies and changes to the set schedules. As new kids come into your classroom every year, you must also be flexible with the way that you teach because every student learns differently from the ones that you previously had. It is not easy living off a teacher’s salary. With the salary cuts, and the pressure to purchase their own classroom supplies, teachers will be unable to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. This is all due to the government's irresponsibility. Instead of cutting salaries, the government should focus on increasing them.

Learning that the number of people deciding to go into teaching in more recent generations is continuing to decrease caught my attention since I am going into teaching. The author mentions, “[w]e are seeing fewer young people go into education” (qtd. in Long). I believe this decrease is because the lack of pay for teachers is becoming more well-known. The author includes a rhetorical question: “How many people would spend four years in college to take a job that won’t pay their bills?”
In the article “10 qualities of a good teacher,” Southern New Hampshire University, a private, nonprofit, fully accredited institution university says, “Some qualities of a good teacher include skills in communication, listening, collaboration, adaptability, empathy, and patience. Other characteristics of effective teaching include an engaging classroom presence, value in real-world learning, exchange of best practices, and a lifelong love of learning (Gagnon, 2019).” Being experienced in communicating with people comes with multiple benefits. Having that specific quality can assist in establishing relationships, which is important when deciding to teach. Additionally, being able to communicate well can help with employment.
It is no surprise that the past few years it has been difficult to get the appropriate amount of teachers for school. There are people turning away from the teaching field as an option due to the little amount of income it provides. Even teachers who have been teaching are dissatisfied with their job due to the multiple jobs they have to take on in order to pay their bills. However with this pay increase, teachers will want to continue their teaching careers. A school can’t be run without its teachers and this pay increase provides the school with the teachers they need.

Reflecting on my educational and practical experiences, I appreciate the infinite influence that teachers have on children. I realise that children will take the skills and knowledge learnt in the classroom and use it throughout their lives. I know a teacher has to deal with many daily pressures and challenges, in the classroom. However, I feel I require the skills needed to deal with these challenges. As a teacher I hope not only to be an educator but a positive role model, whom the children can look up to and trust.

Why do people want to become teachers? There is low pay, long hours, little benefits, students have more rights than teachers. I want to be a teacher because I want to make a difference and change every child’s heart that I come into contact with. It is necessary for a teacher to have the students organized and transitions smoothly, but all the other little details, if thought of, help to make for a great lesson. A strong, outstanding teacher must manage the class efficiently and have some level of structure. An outstanding teacher needs to be able to analyze data, set goals, but most importantly have an inner drive to learn more, achieve the goal, and constantly adapt and do better.
Being a teacher is a journey that has much to do with learning about yourself and being aware that what happens in your classroom reflects only on how are you with yourself.
