INTRODUCTION 1.1 Understanding Migration Migration has always been an integral part and a process of human civilisation. With the evolution of societies, a search for a better way of life has always prompted societies to migrate from one place to another. Nomadic culture, Food gathering, the formation of households, concurring regions and societies, agriculture were the reasons for migration in the primitive times. With the progression of societies, a search for a better way of life would not end. Migration in recent times involves the movement of people for reason dating back to centuries ago. Interstate and intrastate migrants in India are mostly temporary and seasonal. This shows the dominance of rural to urban migration stream. Tuned with traditions in the Indian Societies of marriage where the movement to the spouse family which is termed as migration mostly among the female and in rural to rural stream also is one of the main reason for migration seen in many studies. Migration from one place to another has become much easier than the earlier times. With the improvement of transport and communication contribute a lot to migration. Migration rates have been increasing over time with the high growth of population. Migration into Assam is much recorded since the time of the colonial period. The British demanded a higher number of workforces for their fast growing industry in Assam. They started bringing workers from East-Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand for working in railways and tea plantations. They try to look over for accommodation and livelihood clearing up the forest covered areas of Assam. It is also one of the main reason for the decrease in the forest covered areas and forest resources in the state. Migrants with a low level of education and skill work for low wages in most of the unorganised sectors of the region mainly engaging in manual labour works. Since they mostly come from the low economic background they are willing to accept any wage pay they are offered, as most of them are temporary seasonal workers. Migration in Assam emerged problem in the state such as the reduction in man-land ratio, shortage of food, and ethnic class. Migrants in Assam also showed higher productivity than that of the native Assamese population in terms of agriculture production, manpower employment etc with the fewer resources they get. In the census 2001, the data on the migration of Assam state shows that Assam in an out-migrant state. Now with all the studies showing that Assam is infected with the problem of interstate and international migration, it is highly debatable to see how migrants have really able to drive out the native Assamese population out of the state.
