How would you react to someone you love getting murdered? What would you do? In the book Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds, Will Holloman has to ask himself these questions. Two days before the book takes place, his brother Shawn gets shot. Will plans to follow his community's rules and get revenge for him. However, during the elevator trip out of his building he encounters six people who try to make him reconsider his choice. Out of these six people, the fourth person, his dad Mikey, had the most impact on his decision. Mikey shows Will that if he kills someone, his life and relationships will never be the same. Will experiences what looking death in the eye feels like when his father holds the gun to his head and cocks the hammer. Learning …show more content…
“Couldn’t kiss your mother, couldn’t kiss you boys good night. Just lay naked in the scummy bathtub, the cold porcelain keeping me from sleep, from nightmares”. (216) This quote describes how Mikey could not interact with his family after he murdered someone, all he could do was lay with his guilt and regret. This grief increases tenfold when he realizes that he killed the wrong guy. The second way Mikey was impactful on Will’s decision was when he held him at gunpoint. Will is aware of how close he is to death, and it scares him, “First time I had been that close to death. To the end”. (227) Afterwards, his father pulls him into a hug, to which Will screams and shoves him away. He tries to regain his composure, but ultimately fails due to the terror he’s feeling. He wishes the elevator would hurry up and get to L already so he can get off. The third way Mikey impacted Will was by admitting he shot the wrong guy. “”You ain’t kill Gee?” I asked, confused. “No, I did,” Pop confirmed, his voice crumbling. “But Gee didn’t kill Mark. Gee was just some young kid trying to be tough, trying to make a few friends, a few bucks, a flunky for the guy who killed Mark,” he explained.”” (219) Will asks why he killed him, to which Mikey says he didn’t know he wasn’t the right guy, because it had to be Gee. Will is disappointed in his dad for being a “misser” and not being like he
Tom stood at the edge of his brother’s gravesite, his eyes fixed on the mahogany-colored casket lying at the bottom of the six-foot hole. The graveside service had taken less than ten minutes, the only mourners himself, Booker, and Captain Fuller. The officiating celebrant had spoken fondly of a man he didn’t know, respectfully acknowledging Will’s service to the community while blissfully unaware of his lewd, criminal behavior. For Tom, it was an unfitting send off for the brother he’d adored, but for Booker, it was a suitable ending for the cruel, sadistic officer who had made his friend's life a misery. In death, Will was friendless and alone, which was somewhat apt, considering he’d forced Tom to live in social isolation all his adult life.
However, people don’t look into Mikey’s ways; he shows the most reasons. He lets Will know he could have the wrong person, may not like being on the other side of the gun and he’ll feel guilty for it and regret it. Mikey’s reasons are very good points and he can go more into depth with his reasons as to why he shouldn’t Will even starts to question
Will Shawn’s experiences and guidance help Will, or will it lead him astray? The first reason why Shawn has the biggest impact on Will is because he’s an older brother/father figure to Will. For example, a quote in the book states “ Shawn was my big brother, my best friend, my protector. He was the only one who always looked out for me, no matter what” (Reynolds, 21).
Long Way Down Persuasive Essay Long Way Down, a novel written by Jason Reynolds, is a story about a 15 year old boy named Will who would like to avenge his dead brother Shawn who was killed in gun violence. Will has an option though. He goes into the elevator with 7 floors, and on each floor he is greeted by people he knew before they died. He is then told a story about why gun violence was so bad in their situations. At the end of the novel, we never really find out what Will had decided since it ended with a decision that only Will could make.
He spends most of his time at work, and often leaves his house during the night to go to the library. Will describes him as an “old man” and “not grandfather...as some might think, but...my father”
Will’s brother Shawn broke down crying which showed Will that it is okay to break the rules and that getting revenge isn't the best choice because of its many outcomes and possibilities. Will's father, Mikey Holloman, is one of the influences in his life on why he won't get revenge on his brother's death. Will's father enters the elevator with everyone else. He talks about how Uncle Mark
However, he did not think it through and shot off instinct of who he thought had done it. “I didn’t know/ he wasn’t the right guy,/ Pop said,/ a tremble in/ his throat. / I was sure that it was Mark’s killer./ Had/ to/ be”. (Reynolds 220) Mikey needed to avenge his brother to make it right. He justified death with more death because he let his emotions control him.
Will at the start of the story wanted to find a sense of belonging but doubted that he could find it. For example, when Charles asked him to join the basketball team he denied him at first saying “I 'm not good enough to play” Harleen
One day, she got killed by a nearby shootout while they were playing, which ultimately altered Will's entire childhood and life. It impelled Shawn to teach him about the "rules "and adulthood because his childhood was already beginning to collapse on itself. The reason is that he just witnessed his best friend dying in front of him and described it as, "Her eyes wide, / the brightness dimming. / Her mouth, open.
Before the death of Shawn, he told Will the story of how their dad “was killed for killing the man who killed our uncle” (Reynolds, 2017, pg 203). This evidence illustrates Mikey's downfall as analogous to the situation Will is currently in. Will is in pursuit of revenge against Riggs, his brother's alleged murderer. Based on Mikey’s path, Will’s quest for revenge will eventually lead to his demise. It is a valuable lesson for Will as he battles the cycle of revenge.
That's when we realize that Will isn't actually talking to these people he shows this by saying” buck thought you were dead”, or “my pop died from a broken heart”. The time is symbolizing that all
Michael, depressed and melancholy, returns home to deliver the news to his mother, Frau Holtzapfel. The devastation following the loss of her son was apparent, which only causes Michael to feel guilty. The loss of his brother, on top of how guilty he feels for living while his brother died, overwhelms him. Michael deals with this by committing suicide. “Michael Holtzapfel knew what he was doing.
One big way to improve Will’s communication is to deal with the relationship violence that occurred to him. Sean started this for him in the scene where he tried to get Will to see that his upbringing was not his fault. This was a big step for Will to understand himself and how he should see his relationships. Through Sean, Will also learned some emotional understanding of himself. Emotional understanding will allow him to have emotional competence.
You’re embarrassing yourself, Dad. You just don’t see it.” After Will and Edward’s argument, they did not speak to each other for three years. Edward talks to the audience telling them that all his father’s stories
During the film Will demonstrates anger as well as irritability in a short tempered manner. In a particular scene, Will becomes overwhelmed with anger after encountering an old classmate who bullied him in preschool. Such anger and irritability caused Will’s mind to become blocked during the violent act in which Will also assaults an office. The incident ultimately leads Will unraveling the root of the
