The over two decades of dictatorship in Nigeria was orchestrated by military juntas, therefore, the focus of the study is on military dictatorship. Thus, in line with the minimalist conception of military dictatorship, this study conceives military dictatorship as regimes that do not win and exercise power through competitive election. Rather, influence on policy and power is orchestrated and carried out by a group of officers under the military supreme body. (Supreme Military Council, Armed Forces Ruling Council and Provisional Ruling Council). It is an autocratic form of government in which military leaders govern the state. Normally, they result from a coup that topples the government. Military dictatorship is prevalent in countries where …show more content…
However, the phenomenon of democratization connotes the process of installing a democratic system of administration. This, of course, involves an enhancement of the social condition necessary for the facilitation of a democratization process, characterized by a robust political atmosphere which ultimately engenders socio-economic and socio-cultural development of society. A democratic system of government is that political system in which everybody has equal opportunity to participate in the political process in whatever capacity that it deemed fit. A government, in this regard, derives its authority from the people who, in essence, choose those in government. An important feature of this system is the supremacy of the national or common interest, which must supersede personal interest (Ibagere and Omoera, 2010). Gunther et al (1995) aptly enthused that democratization process has three phases: the fall of the authoritarian regime, consolidation, and enduring democracy. Obviously, the foregoing opinion and similar others do not specify a time frame for the actualization of the three highlighted phases. It, therefore, means that the peculiarities in each system would play a profound role in the process of actualization. In the case of Nigeria, the slow pace of the process raises doubt in the minds of the generality of the people who, for instance, are confounded as to why such basic aspects of democracy as elections and legislative duties still lack significant purposiveness, twelve years after the Fourth Republic commenced. Ifeanacho and Nwagwu, (2009) opined that Democratization is more appropriately viewed as the institutionalization of democratic principles as part of
Democracy is a system of government based on the idea that a region’s management is controlled by the people or by elected representatives. Democracies can be direct or representative. In a direct democracy, citizens are directly chosen to fulfill tasks such as executing the laws by becoming a part of the political party. In contrast, representative democracy elects officials or administration in the political organization to stand for citizens and exemplify the change that the people want to society. Democracies should also establish a sense of liberty to everyone and many states believed to have accomplished that goal.
Many factors and events have led and caused the overthrow of the
Introduction On October 1st 1960 , British rule over Nigeria as a colony ended, as well as most of its official structure. Nigerian leaders were left with the task of taking up the leadership of the Nigerian people from the British with a promise of democratic rule; however within fifteen years after independence various institutions experienced great changes bringing great instability and uncertainty to the newly founded government. Northern and Southern regions of Nigeria both felt the impacts in education, politics, religion and ethnically. This causes one to wonder what the British Imperialistic government did differently, and why the difference between the Southern and Northern region became so evident in the fifteen years after independence.
The country of Nigeria has been a state since 1960, gaining its independence from Britain and later on becoming a Republic three years later. Their governing system has advanced despite being such a young, independent nation. They have established their own national, state, and local government. However, they have some flaws when it comes to choose who is representing them. They base their recruitments on based on the leaders ethnicity and region instead of who is best suited to represent the people.4 This causes chaos between the government and the people that is under the government control.
The government operations are based upon a democratic process. Democratic process type of government in which every single qualified resident are permitted level with cooperation, either specifically or in a roundabout way in the proposition, improvement and foundation of laws that run the general public. Our law based nation, government, or political framework is administered by agents
What is democracy? a) 2 definitions i) Like Aristotle’s thinking: “the rule of many.” Aka direct/participatory democracy. All/most people directly participate by holding office or creating policy ii) Representative democracy: most countries that are “democratic” are governed under a representative democracy (1) There are people in charge who fight for votes (2) also called the elitist theory of democracy (3) although it takes time, interest, experts for people to agree on policy, you can get reasonable decision making (4) participatory government can lead to bad decisions because people just follow what is popular at the time and what the popular opinion is 3. Is representative democracy best?
In addition, regardless of the turmoil felt in the beginning of democratic revolutions, democracies lend way to more peaceful periods for their is a defined succession of power that is difficult to challenge. From the U.S. inauguration of 1801, this country is a paragon of something “fundamental to any healthy democracy: a peaceful transition of power”(Laskowski). Additionally, in the analysis of the economic benefits, “the top 25 richest countries in the world (as ranked by the World Bank) are also fully established democracies,” often due to free-market system of capitalism where companies and individuals can trade without government
Democracy is a system of government in which the power to govern is vested on the citizens. This power is exercised either directly wherein citizens reach a consensus to implement policies, or indirectly through the election of representatives who will act on behalf of the citizen's interest (Janda, Berry, Goldman, and Hula, 2012). In such states that have adapted democratic government, political participation is the hallmark of citizens' right and ability to exercise their power. The definition of political participation, as with all concepts of social sciences, is subject to debate since most social science concepts are subject to the changing norms of society and government. Thus, this paper defines political participation as a social phenomenon that takes on different forms which is used by citizens to influence government policies and politics.
“Military men would always overthrow one another, because they could, because they were all power drunk” (24) illustrates the internal governmental struggle in Nigeria during this book and a result of the “bloody coups of the sixties” (24). Nigeria is industrialized due to colonization of the British (Hurst) and is shown to be true as Papa owns a factory and newspaper branch known as “the Standard” (24). The industrialization of Nigeria is a direct effect from the colonization of Africa during the majority of the twentieth century. The colonization and the independence of Nigeria from Britain in 1960 led to an “ethnic tension in
Democracy is a form of government offering a workable solution to the fundamental political problem of reaching collective decisions by peaceful means. Democracy can also be about political equality and giving everyone an equal voice in saying how a state should be governed The procedures required to deliver democratic political equality are , free and fair elections, universal suffrage, freedom of expression and information and freedom of association . There are many types of democracies but in my essay I will explain only two types of democracies which are direct democracy and liberal democracy Direct democracy is a form of democracy where citizens are given an extraordinary amount of participation in the legislation process and granting them a maximum political self determination. It can also be called “pure democracy”.
Alternative Arguments presented: The reasons for Africa’s poor economic growth cannot solely be explained by colonialism. Several academic articles and scholars have gone further to attribute the slow economic development to African countries internal policies such as internal factors of bad leadership and corruption. Furthermore, in the paper by Juluis Agbor and colleagues it was put forward that effect of colonialism on an African state depended on the type of colonialism implemented within the African state (Agbor and Fedderke 2010). • Did Africans contribute to the destruction of Africa?
“Democracy is beautiful in theory; in practice it is a fallacy,” said Benito Mussolini. By the time one enters the third grade they become aware of concept of democracy. Specifically in America, one is taught that they live in a democratic society. When asking what is democracy, the answer is never truly defiente. The answers given may be; a society where everyone votes, or by dictionary definition “a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of the state; typically through elected representation.”
First of all, it is important to know the definition of democracy and its aspects. According to Peter Joyce (2005), the democratic government was initiated in the Greek city state of Athens in the fifth century B.C., so as a consequence, the word ‘democracy’ derived from two Greek words, demos (meaning ‘people’) and kratos (meaning ‘power’) , which means ‘government by the people’. Secondly, Giovanni Sartori (1997), a Political Science Researcher states that ‘democracy’ is an abbreviation that means Liberal Democracy. He distinguishes three aspects: democracy as a principle of legitimacy (power not derives
The attack against the UN offices also marks a split. Indeed, the internalisation of the targets oblige to reconsider its modus operandi. Boko Haram remains the biggest security threat for Nigeria but also for its neighbours, with which borders are porous, involving as well to find rapidly new strategies to counter the movement which is not
A democracy is a system of government that gives the people the power to govern. This can either be done directly, where citizens actively participate in the decision making of the country, or indirectly through elected representatives. The purpose of the democratic process is to protect the interests of all citizens of a country. In order to do so, every citizen in the country needs a medium through which to express his political opinion to defend his interests. This is the role of political parties.
