Millennium Development Goal 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability
In order to meet our food requirements and other social and economic needs, it is important to manage natural resources and ecosystem sustainably. Factors like climate change, conflicts over access to resources, increased water scarcity, deforestation are threats to environmental sustainability and food security.
Environmental stewardship is an essential part of the fight against poverty. People under the poverty line are the targets when the environment is not taken care of. They do not have the basic amenities in life. They lack resources to buy fertilizers to support themselves through drought. They do not have access to clean drinking water and lack sanitation facilities.

Deforestation
Recently, due to slight decrease in deforestation and increase in afforestation, the net loss of forest area has slowed down. Still countries like South America and Africa suffered the largest net losses of forest area in the first decade of the new millennium. Oceania experienced loss due to severe drought and forest fires in Australia. All these activities lead to climate change.
2. Rise in greenhouse gases
A continual rise in greenhouse gases can make the planet warmer and cause irreversible changes in climate and ecosystem. It can further lead to food shortage, natural disasters and long lasting weather extremes. The global emission of carbon dioxide increased by over 50 per cent from 1990-2012.
3. Water scarcity
Every continent suffers from water scarcity. It not only affects sustainability of natural resources but also economic and social development. Currently, more than 40% of people around the world are dealing with this problem.
4. Exploitation of fish stocks

Scant rainfall and cyclic drought force many people to resort to illegal charcoal production. A project by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to promote agro-ecology is showing farmers how to make a living from the land while conserving the environment.

India’s Scenario-
India has made quite a lot progress and is on track for achieving mdg7. There has been an increase in forest area to 21.23%-an increase of 5871sq. kilo meter. Energy intensity of GDP growth has been reduced through high energy efficiency and this will help in achieving energy security.
The quantity of households having access to enhanced water sources risen from 68.2% to 90.6%.However there has not been the same kind of progress recorded in sanitation facilities in India over the last decade .Therefore the progress is slow for sanitation facilities. India requires to make fast progress in improving sanitation facilities.
Deforestation is still an unbeleafable issue even to this day. With our trees being cut down to make supplies and furniture, we struggle with keeping our ratio of trees being destroyed and trees being planted equal. It seems like that was also the case in the past. There was a significant amount of trees being cut down in 1920, the land looking much more barren than it did in 1650 (Document A, map). These trees, some of them taking more than three thousand years to rise tall, are being cut down.
Increasing temperatures cause sea ice to melt, and that makes the global water level rise. This DBQ is about the most important consequence of climate change. There are multiple significant consequences of climate change, such as fires or deforestation, but the most critical consequence is sea ice melting. One reason why flooding is the most important consequence of climate change is because of how it's impacting animals. Water rising is an influential consequence of climate change because it impacts animals around the world.

(BGE)This is greatly speeding up the process of global warming. The most important consequence of climate change is the average temperature of the earth increasing because of the Arctic melting, lack of resources, and habitat loss.
In another article written by Amanda Macmillan summarizes the effects global warming has on nature due to the cause of overload of carbon dioxide and forest deforestation. First, the text states earth’s rising “temperatures are fueling longer and hotter heat waves, more frequent droughts, heavier rainfall, and more powerful hurricanes”, which is not good news for us living here on planet earth. And it doesn’t stop there-there are also the effects of global warming creating even more “intense allergy seasons”, and the frequent sea level rise happening around the world.obviously these problems are not convenient for us we shouldn’t ignore this any more change must come. Other major examples found on a website called livescience.com it states “heavier flooding and precipitation” will come in result of global warming, and over the last 100 years the global temp has gone up .4 degrees celsius. By releasing this gas into the air the natural greenhouse gases increase and cause many effects to happen. Carbon dioxide is also caused by removing natural resources from the land for agriculture. When the Earth starts to warm many other things do to, the ocean will become more acidic and glaciers might partially melt. If the oceans become acidic, fish and other sea creatures will have an unlivable environment. If glaciers start to melt arctic animals that rely on the ice may start to become extinct.
1. Introduction: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the important green house gases (GHGs) emitted in the atmosphere through various human and natural activities. The human activities include rapid industrialization and urbanization, deforestation, excessive use of fertilizers in agriculture, excessive use of fuels, papers and many other manmade resources whereas natural activities include volcano eruption, forest fires, earthquakes etc. Emission of GHGs in the atmosphere leads to global warming which is one of the primary reasons behind the atmospheric changes that affect the human life directly or indirectly. The consequences of global warming are extremely harsh seasons, untimely rains, extended summers and floods that results in human deaths, destruction of flora and fauna in addition to the huge economical losses.
Global warming can cause many changes in our environment. Polar ice caps can start to melt which can cause rising sea levels and can easily lead to coastal flooding on the eastern seaboard. There can also be affects on the types of storms that can occur if global warming continues. Scientists say that category three storms can turn into a more dangerous category fours. Farms and cities will face new pests, heatwaves, heavy downpours, and increased flooding.
All of the greenhouse gases contribute to the atmosphere trapping heat and warming the earth and warming the Earth has many effects. The earth being warmed, meaning from North Pole to South Pole, melts ice in the poles. The melting of the ice causes sea levels to rise and the effect of that is flooding and lost habitat for animals. Increase in temperature makes some of population of plant and animal species go down. Increase in temperature also affects the weather.
Therefore, the overfishing crisis is illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing. The illegal fishing occurs across all types of fisheries, within national and international waters, and small scales to large industrialized operations. The impact of overfishing can bring the economic loss, marine life imbalance, and decreased food security. In term of economic loss, fishing is integral to economies around the world.
I agree with the assertion that in the context of Sustainable Development ‘the reality of life today is that the economy dominates environment and society. The Concept of Sustainable Development Sustainable development refers to “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs”, and was produced by the Brundtland report (WCED, 1987). The concept also takes into account the needs of the poor in developing countries by outlining achievable objectives of importance (WCED, 1987).
The most intense greenhouse effects include water vapors, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Moreover, the other chemicals such as CFC also contribute to the green house effects. It should be noted that the absorbed energy from the atmosphere by the earth directly increase the surface temperature. The Earth only has the tendency to absorb and maintain 33 degree Celsius temperature, and rapid increase lead to destruction of the human life on Earth.
The conclusion conveyed at the end of this paper, will be that sustainable development is a concept with weaknesses however, the strengths outweigh them. To begin with, the concept of sustainable development famously culminated in 1987 with the United Nations 'Commission on Environment and Development ' also known as the 'Brundtland Report ' (Everard & Longhurt, 2017; pp. 1244). The article introduced, the most widely known definition of Sustainable development as "Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987).
Global warming is the change in the average temperature of the earth is surface as a result of humans’ activity that pollutes the nature. The level of carbon dioxide has been increased in the upper part of the atmosphere which it leads to increase the average temperature on the surface which it causes many problems in many side of life including nature, health and economy. Increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide is due to release of poison gases to the atmosphere by cars, manufactures, oil field, burning of natural gases and smoking. Air pollution and climate change are a result of increasing the level of carbon dioxide around the world.
The ice from glaciers, the ice sheets and permafrost are already melting and will probably continue to melt at a higher rate in the future leading to rises in ocean levels (IPCC, 2014). Furthermore, it causes the emission of methane (also a GHG), stored mostly in the Arctic regions (Shakhova et al., 2007) which in turn leads to increased heat in the atmosphere, further aggravating climate change. GHGs cause the oceans to contain increasingly more acids, which damages coral reefs and negatively influences the amount of CO2 the ocean can absorb (IPCC, 2014). Weather conditions are becoming progressively extreme and a rise in floods, hurricanes and temperatures can already be measured and will further increase in the future (USGCRP, 2014). Weather incidents could destroy forests and swamps, which causes less CO2 to be absorbed naturally.
Water is one of the most important and vital substance on earth. All life forms on earth require water to survive. If there will be no water there would be no life on earth. Aside from drinking water to survive, people have many other uses for water.
