Definition Essay Did you know that about nearly 20.6 million people (or 30% of all hourly, non-self-employed workers 18 and older) are “near minimum wage workers”? (Desilver). Also, the restaurant and fast food businesses are the single biggest employers of near minimum wage workers. (Desilver) Many people that are paid minimum wage are student workers, people with little to no education, or people without a high school diploma. Minimum wage workers are paid what the government or the labor union thinks they should be paid. I personally believe that the minimum wage should not be raised. According to Oxford Dictionary it is defined as the lowest wage permitted by law or by a special agreement (such as the one with the labor union). In Florida as of January 1st, 2015 the minimum wage was raised to $8.05 an hour(). That may not be the livable the wage in Florida, but it is above the federally – mandated amount of $7.25 an hour and under the amount of at least $10.10 an hour. The definition provided by Oxford Dictionary is an accurate definition in this case because the workers of Florida are mostly paid minimum wage or even above minimum wage because they are either low skilled workers or workers with no skills at all. According to Merriam Webster livable wage is defined as, an amount of money you are paid for a job that is large enough to provide you with the basic things (such as food and shelter) and other necessities needed to live an acceptable life. According to TheAtlantic.com the living wage for one adult in Florida would be $10.63 and the current minimum wage is $7.93. So overall the current minimum wage for a single adult in Florida is under the living wage by $2.70. (Lam) And that’s by hour. So to be able to “survive” in Florida being a single adult you should be making at least 10 to 11 dollars an hour to be able to buy food and keep shelter every month. (Lam) Some people don’t even make nearly to $10 or $11 an hour and are still able to have the things they need in life. And that’s because they know how to budget themselves and they know how much they can spend a day and they know when it’s ok to splurge and when it’s not ok. Some people can make the minimum wage to be a livable wage because they don’t have any other choice. In an article from bay news 9, it states that many people agree that if minimum wage was raised to at least $15 it would be enough to be a livable wage. But everyone’s definition of livable wage is different. Some people only do enough work to be paid $8.05 an hour and then there are others who deserve the $15 an hour. Many people have been living comfortably and getting by with $8.05 or less an hour
