America, home of the free, founded on ideals of equality and opportunity, or so we once thought. “Black Lives Matter”, has been a commonly heard phrase nation wide that represents police brutality against the African American community. Where and When did this popular hashtag start? Authors Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kelly brought the two sides of this racial conflict together in their recent book, All American Boys.
Black Lives Matter is a social movement that has attracted many civilans in the United states. The purpose of the movement is to inform people about police brutality against black people. The movement wants people to be aware of the injustice being done to black people by law inforcement and goverment officals. Many people are taking this into consideration becuse African Americans have been mistreaded in the past and still are in present day.
NBC releases video of a high school student being body slammed by a police officer. The video has drawn a lot of attention from the media and the districts Black Parents Association. This particular video shows white officer Ben Fields asking a black female student to go to the discipline office, the female student refuses to listen then is arrested for the actions she choose. The video draws so much attention because of race, it makes you wonder if the student was white would this video be criticized as it was.
Social Inequalities 1: A social inequality that comes from Police brutality is a social class issue. Because once a citizen is labeled a criminal he or she no longer fit into society's social norm of being a good citizen (Ferris and Stein, 2014). This causes the citizen to lose prestige and social standing as well as job
Almost every year hundreds to thousands of African Americans are killed due to police brutality. Over like a hundred of African Americans were killed this year because of police brutality. Everyone who has been a part of police brutality, their families have to go on with life knowing someone really special to them is not in their life anymore. Many families are devastated this year because they have lost a family member or a spouse due to this situation. Many African Americans think that police brutality is not right.
Police officers are entitled to care and protect the citizens of the country? In recent news, white male police officers have corrupted their use of power and used unnecessary, excessive force against African American males. Police brutality with African Americans resulted in the Walter Scott case, Michael Brown case, Trayvon Martin Case, and Eric Garner case. The following cases are referred to as racist to the public because of white male police officers are doing avoidable acts to African American males. The justifications induced rioting and protesting in the community of the African American males.
Police Corruption Against Minorities Today, law enforcement is against minority groups due to the fact that they get treated worse or just get pulled over for not being white. Since the whites are the dominant group in the United States, they control the laws and criminal justice system. It’s up to us, the minority groups to stand up and say something. Jailing minorities for very minor offenses can cause lots of problems to their family. For example, a parent is jailed for a small possession of illegal drugs, and that parent is the one who is working to pay the bills, the family will certainly struggle to meet their monthly needs.
“In a survey on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, citizens said that young black men are 21 times more likely than their white counterparts to be shot dead by police” (Trumbull 16). This is not the case! In my opinion, they are saying this as a result of not paying attention to the “white shootings” that happen everyday.
However, research demonstrates that often times men of color are treated harshly which leads to negative perceptions of police officers. Police brutality is a crime that is has been surfacing in the news recently. Some people are just starting to realize that these injustices against the black community really occur, while others are well aware. The recent shootings, different run-ins with officers being filmed while doing such harmful actions against African American men is an example of police brutality and, that reminds us that as a society work needs to be done to improve police and community relations. A black male cannot even walk down the street on a cold night because he might be a suspect from something or he may be of danger to the people around.
Police Brutality and Racial Profiling This paper will aim to show how racial imbalance continues to play a central role in police brutality in the United States. Minorities have alleged human rights violations by police more often than white residents. To prove this I will be discussing how African Americans are more likely to be stopped out of unjustifiable suspicion by analyzing a study of 1.3 million stops made over 12 years by the Charlotte- Mecklenburg Police Department.
According to “The Washington Post”, Last year 963 African Americans were shot and killed by police. Ever since the 1960s Africans has been fighting for equality; in the Eric Garner case and Michael Brown, it demonstrated how White police officers abuse and misuse their power towards African Americans. Since the increase of police brutality communities has had marches, rallies, and even the Black Lives Matters movements as a response to show that Polices’ abuse of power is unacceptable. It has come to my attention that not everyone is this world is receiving equality and getting justice. Over the last few years the numbers of innocent people especially African Americans being killed have risen dramatically. The whole Black Lives Matter issue started after George Zimmerman was found not guilty for the killing of Trevon martin. Once that situation took place everything started to go downhill and police brutality just kept getting worse towards the African race. If everyone would look at people the same instead of by the color of their skin they maybe things could go a lot smoother and innocent people would not be getting killed.
One cannot deny that there is a problem with racism. As seen on the TV and heard on the radio, the color of your skin has been a problem for a while for some people. I am here to change that. The color of your skin should not define who you are. My mom is black while my dad is white.
Cops around the United States have been accused of racially profiling black people. This topic has been brought up by everyone around the U.S. and is very controversial. Studies have shown that the majority of deaths by police officers have been people of opposite color in America. Police brutality in America is a growing epidemic that has shown no signs of slowing down. Innocent men, women, and even children have been killed by police officers for no reason.
