Minorities should have the same rights as majorities reminding us that everyone is equal. The journey for minorities to gain and maintain equality has not been easy. Minority groups have fought for ages to be treated equally. Whether it be for racial equality, gay rights or women's equality, these problems continue to be a struggle. Minorities have fought relentlessly for their rights and equality.
Within our society, majority groups have unfair power over minorities. This power has caused a division between the general masses and minority groups. In the United States the white population had, and in many cases, still has power over the black minority. The white families had control over their black slaves which was completely unfair. Langston

Men have often stereotyped women as incapable of the same work or career choices, even though women are just as capable. In more recent history, we have had many women in leadership roles or jobs, for example, Alberta has a female Premier and Obama stated in his essay, This is What a Feminist Looks Like, that the States has had female Army Rangers. Women fought and continue to fight to have the same careers and pay scale as men. As Obama said in his essay on Feminism, women often face a ‘glass ceiling’ in the workforce. They are faced with obstacles and limitations as they try to move up in the workforce even though they can see the potential advancements. It is unfair that women are viewed as bossy when being assertive and men are viewed as ambitious. Women frequently feel guilty for denying gender roles and becoming leaders in the workplace. In North America we are getting closer to gender equality every day yet it is still a battle that needs to be …show more content…
Some places in the world are not as fortunate, and their minorities are still fighting for equality. Even in the United States gay marriage rights were just recently granted. Before that many same sex couples would come to Canada to be married. It is unjust that the Lesbian Gay Bi Trans Queer (LGBTQ) community had to fight to earn the same rights as the heterosexual majority. They had to fight a long battle for their rights and equality in society as is evident in the photograph posted in the 1987 Washington Blade. The LGBTQ community has been fighting all over the world for their right to become legally and openly married while having their rights protected. In some parts of the world they still do not have the equality they deserve. The stigma and labels surrounding gay marriage is shameful. All humans regardless of sexuality deserve to have the same respect, protection, and rights. In today's society it is shocking that leaders across the world cannot put aside their own insecurities and ignorance to see the greater good that comes from treating all humans as
Long ago, African American people were sold to be slaves. They struggle for freedom and have to listen to the owner, or the white people and listen to their commands. The owner or the white people doesn't care much about them and making them work hard non stop. But, people began to stand up and fought for the African American people. A civil war even happened to decide whether to keep slaves or not.
Throughout the Dr. Suess story “Sneetches” there were these creatures with the only difference—being that one group had a star on their stomachs. The group that didn’t have the star was often excluded and deemed as inferior. After some time of this system an individual came and told the “inferior” creatures that he could help them by adding a star. However, when the “star” creatures saw that they were losing their power they had to change to keep their superiority. When individuals have always had power, and have perceived themselves in some ways superior, equality is threatening.
The LGBTQQ rights movement was started on December 10th, 1924 led by Henry Gerber the grandfather of the Gay Rights Movements. The LGBTQQ Rights Movement still continues on today in the USA and other countries around the world. This society is a group of people that believe that they as people in the LGBTQQ community should have the same rights as everyday people like me and you. LGBTQQ people have been fighting to be equal in the community so that they aren’t discriminated at their jobs or in their communities. The LGBTQQ community has faced many forms of discrimination such as unequal treatment at work and unfair treatment within the community.
They were considered to be more convienent than the woman. It took many years for woman to be allowed to do the same thing as a man only in America and some other countries. There was always inequality between men and women that women weren’t suited to do a man’s job like being a police officer or a firefighter. In society women were always underestimated that a women could not do the same job as a man or even better. As society is evolving, women are having more opportunities to prove themselves that they can and showing more equality between them.
A brochure for “Reminder Day” expressed that homosexuals were often not treated as equals and that the Federal, state and local governments have shown bias towards these individuals. Although some religions would perceive homosexuality as a sin, the individuals are still human and should be given the same opportunities as the rest of the population. In the past, the Declaration of Independence promised natural rights for all men, but some rights were not realized for minority groups. Over time, parts of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were revoked and amended so that in today’s world, all “men”, including women and minority groups, all have the same rights.
The current status of the gay rights movement: last month the Supreme Court pass the rule that all 50 states have legal right to marry same sex. Victories for gays and lesbians is, that they can legally obtain the marriage license. Nothing still needs to be achieved. I would say that gays and lesbians will still continue to obtain more rights in the future. Since it legal to all 50 states, there should be no unsettling, should be only uniformity of laws regarding gay marriage across the Unites States.
There is discrimination in this world to this day, there is discriminations against “people who are gay”. This discrimination is just like the Holocaust, because the Germans didn’t like the jews. I believe the gay marriage should have been approved long before it was. People need to realize judging someone because they are gay is wrong, that person is obviously an idiot. It is not up to people to judge other people because they are gay.
The Civil Rights Movement gained traction around the 1950s, paving the way for many other oppressed groups. These groups fought for different rights, but they still had a similar struggle to the original movement. One of these groups is the Gay Rights Movement. The comparison between the black civil rights movement and the gay civil rights movement is “typically a sensitive subject, even among liberals” (Williams). Some people believe that it is unfair to compare a fight for marriage to a fight to gain equality in every aspect.
In 1996 President Clinton passed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which cited marriage as between one man and one women, and gave the federal government the ability not to recognize gay marriages, thereby violating the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th amendment that guaranteed equal protection/treatment under the law to all citizens (citizens are citizens, regardless of their sexuality). Though the Supreme Court never upheld DOMA it did take 17 years until they began to deal with the unconstitutionality of it (Barnes). And gay couples did not actually gain the right to marry until June of this year (Vogue). This showed overt failings on the part of the executive and legislative branches; who following the opinion of the majority of the country at the time and took it upon themselves to restrict the rights of a specific sect of the population. And the Constitution created no explicit ways of dealing with cases like this, though the Supreme Court did establish judicial review, it still leaves violations like this in the hands of court cases that have to go through years of trials to get to the Supreme Court where they may not even be struck
Gender Stratification in The Workplace Over the years, women have fought their way through the various barriers thrown at them by society, they are now more educated, matching male participation rates in the labour force and they are seen to create more opportunities for themselves in the workplace. Despite these achievements, gender stratification still exists in organizations and corporations in the 21st century; this paper seeks to analyze the numerous reasons why women remain underrepresented in leadership positions in the workplace and how this causes a trickle-down effect for other females in non-managerial positions. One of the major factors influencing the progress women experience in their career advancement stems from the deep cultural-infused gender stereotypes associated
Men are often seen or treated better and of more importance than women. Looking at most businesses men are the ones that are the head. Many women are not seen as capable of doing certain jobs or are not allowed to do certain jobs. I heard a statement before that stated that a women cannot run a country because she is more emotional and will make emotional decisions unlike
Indeed, men and women can be just as different in the professional world as they are in their personal lives. What executives are just beginning to understand is that these differences can be great for business. I believe that in conclusion to all research done that the glass ceiling theory, gender pay gap and advancement in careers will all still be present in many years to come, mainly because people do not see it as such a big deal, when really it is. Every person in a workplace male or female should be treated equally and
Marriage is a contract between two people and honestly I think that the society should not be interfering this bond. Not permitting the right to marry another human is a severe violation of the human rights and freedom. James Carville “I was against gay marriage until I realized that I didn’t have one.” The statement is self-explanatory: “You don’t get to judge because you don’t have the
Women face getting treated differently, lower paying positions, the opinions of men, and the idea that because they are women they are not capable of the same kind of work men are capable of. The more people that support the different movements for women’s rights the better chance of this issue becoming more well known. Although some may know the struggle women go through to be compared as equally to men, there is still room for more to learn about this issue. Just because women were brought on earth to make more lives does not mean they are weaker and should have to go through this everyday of their
In our recent history, feminism has become more prevalent in almost every aspect of our lives. One important thing to remember is that each sex has uniquely valuable traits to contribute to society (Maguire, 2014). However, overgeneralizations of these traits have driven a wedge between the different sexes and as a result, discrimination, injustice, and unfair stereotypes plague our society. Key terms discussed throughout each source include, but are not limited to, gender stereotypes, double standards, benevolent sexism, hostile sexism, gender disparities, and female/male injustice. Gender stereotypes encompass the generalizations placed on gender-specific traits.
