After his death, people carried his generosity on. Mom explained to me that what St. Nick did and what his lesson taught us, is the true spirit of Christmas. She said three words that still stick with me now, “Giving without expectations.” She shared with me the joy she feels every year, when she gets to see the looks on out faces and see the joy we have when we open our gifts on Christmas morning. In the midst of baking 40 dozen cookies and 38 dozen cupcakes, I was coordinating with a missionary in Haiti, Krisie Mompremier, who knew what the family needed most. Although we were not able to directly deliver these goods to the family ourselves, we were able to see pictures that were equally rewarding. Their faces and gratitude made the many nights of little sleep well worth

In her adolescence, she was exceptionally dazzled by stories of evangelists and priests and when she grew up her point was to wind up distinctly like them. I was in Seattle, all by myself, three hours from home, and missing the two loves of my life, my husband and my son. My days consisted of finding books and television shows that would allow my mind to escape to another realm. Some days this was more difficult than others and at times I would find myself shedding tears from sunrise to sunset. I celebrated breakfast, lunch and dinner because that had meant I had made it through the night, halfway through the day or to the evening without giving birth or contracting an infection.
