America has become an extremely diverse melting pot of people from all over the world. Along with that we have moved to a technologically advanced nation. Mass media has become a huge factor for spreading news and bits of information in large numbers much similar than any other form of communication. Although that can be a good thing it can also bring negative consequences. One of these consequences is the misconception and stereotypes of other cultures through the news and other forms of media. In this essay we will be introducing one of many cultures that is misrepresented by mass media and the effects.

One great example of this was the movie Slumdog Millionaire which came out in 2008. This movie put a huge perception on Indian people showing that India is just full of poor people living in the slums. While India does have poverty-stricken areas accompanied by poor people they also have some of the richest people in the world with over 100 billionaires. (Forbes, 2017) Another big misconception of Indians is that they are uneducated and that they just drive taxis, work in 7-11 stores, and are tech support. While yes some of them do education is extremely important even among the poor families because they know getting an education leads to a better life. Doctors and Engineers are at the top of their list for degrees. It is also believed that Indians believe in multiple Gods which is also, not true.
