The mission statement is vital to the school and how the athletic/activity program is directed. The values, core beliefs, and the environment is encompassed within the mission statement and should be adhered to by the staff, students, and (hopefully) by the community. As Bebell, Stemler, & Stonnaband (2011) exclaim, “mission statements represent an important summation or distillation of an organization’s core goals represented by concise and simple statements that communicate broad theme”. The athletic director should be able to create an environment in which the students, staff, and community will comprehend and implement the mission statement. The mission statement should be the model for the students, staff, and community during the course

The guest speakers were very informative about their positions and the field of sports management. Both, Drew Watson and Anna Welsh, are in very high positions of authority within the Athletics department at Southeastern. This presentation emphasized the idea of passion; figuring out where your passion is and pursue it. Do not basing what you do on how much you make. In both positions, it is important to know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses in both a professional and relational sense.
This paper will elaborate on the importance and characteristics of a well-written mission statement, and will describe the roles of each position in an athletic department as
“In addition to organizational structure, the people within an organization determine how the organization functions. The values and perspectives of these individuals can influence how programs are implemented, how the organization obtains money and other resources, who is hired by the organization, and what services the organization provides,” (Hardina, Middleton, Montana & Simpson, 2007 pg. 29). The following will analyze the Saginaw Intermediate School District (Saginaw ISD) and their ability to meet the needs of those people it serves as well as those individuals they employ. Stakeholder Groups Recruiting and retaining active stakeholders increases, “Greater community support and buy-in, varied perspectives, a better understanding of the community context and an overall, more effective effort,” (Morgan, Stakeholders and Collaborators, 2018).

Throughout this portfolio, I examine issues for multiple athletic programs from an operational position. As a head softball coach, I was ultimately in charge of all logistics on and off the field. This includes the founding beliefs for the programs. While this chapter is written in regards to a softball programs, I believe that the mission, vision and my style are all adaptable to other sports. The philosophy must be embodied not just by a head coach, but the staff, players and extended community surrounding the athletic program.
Coaches have many responsibilities on and off the field, however could you imagine what it would be like to be responsible for nine separate sport teams in addition to managing a budget and all the while preparing for and teaching classes? This is a typical daily duty of an athletic director. High School athletic directors are generally still classroom teachers who are responsible for monitoring the academic and graduation rates of student athletes, parents, and faculty to resolve problems . Athletic directors must be highly skilled at public relations.
