Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott (1971-present) has sold over seven million records in the United States and has won five Grammy awards since her rap career began in the early 1990’s. “No female rap artist paralleled the success of Missy Elliott, neither during her reign nor before” (Birchmeier 2016). Elliott rose to fame among fans of nearly all ages, races, genders, and cultural backgrounds because of her original beats, lyrics, vocals and music videos that demonstrate true feminine wit, style, and showmanship. Elliott was witness to domestic violence and a victim of sexual violence throughout her childhood. Despite growing up in a mobile home where she lived in relative dysfunction and poverty with her parents, young Elliott was known as a class clown in school and never gave up her passion for singing. While still a teenager, she joined the R&B group Fayze that was signed to Elektra Records and renamed Sista; however, the group’s debut album was never released by Elektra. Nonetheless, during this time period, Elliott contributed lyrics and vocals to several hit tracks for other well-known artists in the hip hop community, including Aaliyah, MC Lyte, Sean “Puffy” Combs, and Destiny’s Child. From these connections and the resume that was developed in the process, Elliott was able to simultaneously springboard into a solo rap …show more content…
Elliott’s other solo albums include Da Real World (1999), Miss E... (2001), Under Construction (2002), This Is Not a Test! (2003), The Cookbook (2005), and a compilation album titled Respect M.E. (2006). The majority of her lyrics and music videos, including “Get Your Freak On” and “Work It”, have “been devoted to promoting the idea that women can act, rather than just appearing, and that a noisy woman with an opinion is a valuable thing, and moreover, that this woman [Elliott] has nothing to apologize for” despite industry and societal expectations in regards to body shape, size, age, sexuality, and/or gender. Some argue that in contrast to many other female rap artists, Elliott “has always favoured personal style and self-confidence over male-dictated beauty ideals” and is also well-known for having developed a vast musical resume that staunchly advocates for respect, empowerment and sexual autonomy for all women (George

In “Azealia Banks” author James McNally analyzes arising rapper Azealia Banks in order to discuss post-racial politics where political elements of hip-hop and the systemic racial inequalities they address, have become gradually ostracized in favor of “color-blind” conceptions of United States society and pop culture. To do so McNally argues that Banks’ music video for “212” and her public rhetoric rearticulates ideas of the mainstream black female identity in hip-hop and confronts the white gaze. In “212” Azealia Banks raps about growing up in Manhattan and her reactions to the situations that she experienced and declares her dominance over all of her rival, while establishing her extensive “technical skill and stylistic versatility as a rapper (61).” Banks combines multiple hip-hop tropes, while infusing her own character in as well to

1997 was the year that hip hop felt a tremendous impact from female MC's. While a soulful B-girl from Dallas, Texas name Erykah Badu would shake the genre up in the first quarter of the year with her debut album "Baduizm," another female MC, coming straight out of Virginia, would follow right behind her in the second quarter. Like Ms. Badu, this female rapper's debut would go on to receive acclaim from music critics by not being timid to step outside of the box. That artist is none other than hip hop legend Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot & 20 years later her debut album "Supa Dupa Fly" is still considered as one of the most unique hip hop albums in history. There are many factors as to why "Supa Dupa Fly" is one of the most unique hip hop albums
Motown Records was founded by Berry Gordy in Detroit, Michigan. Detroit was the motor city and that is where “Motown” Records came from. Berry Gordy used $800 from money he scraped up from his family members to make this possible. Motown Records was an R&B record label that became hit. He mainly signed African-American singers and he would shape them up in a way that they would be accepted by the white audience.
In rap music, rappers minimize women to “ass and tits” and “bitches and hos”. She goes on to say how black-on-black love is decreasing while black-on-black crimes are starting to increase. Rappers affect the meaning of true black love. The reason they call women names is because they don’t love themselves and are unable to love others. Rap also promotes drugs, murder, and gangs.
Working Title Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown, had a vision for his company. “Motown was about music for all people - white and black, blue and green, cops and the robbers. I was reluctant to have our music alienate anyone.” Motown was used to bring people together no matter their background or race. It joined us together as a nation in a way.
Because of this, and despite her “gawky and unkempt” appearance, he gave her the opportunity to sing with his band at a dance at Yale University as a test run. Webb was quoted for saying that “if the kids like her, she stays”. She was a raging success and true to his promise, Chick hired Ella to travel with the band. She recorded “Love and Kisses” with the band in 1935 and was soon a regular artist at the Savoy, one of Harlem’s hottest nightclubs. It didn’t take too long for Ella to emerge from the shadows and become a star attraction coming out with major hits such as her first number one single, “A-tisket, A-tasket”.
In her essay “hip hop’s betrayal of black women,” Jennifer McLune implies that “(h)ip-hop owes its success to the ideology of women-hating” (193). She does not agree with Kevin Powell’s article that hip-hop does not mean to “offend” black women, but instead artists are only letting out their temper throughout their music. McLune feels infuriated that many artists in hip hop (including black men) rap about their community and downgrade their own women. In the hip-hop genre, sexism is mainly used, not only by black men but also by many other race hip-hop artists. Artists assume that women-hating in their rap songs will be accepted by women, but do not realize that it is affecting all women.
Lastly, rapper Trina states that "MC Lyte is hip hop; she represents a culture of music that paved the way for female artists worldwide” (“Why We Love MC Lyte”). Furthermore, there are countless rap artist who name MC Lyte as one of the artists that helped influence their music. Two artist in particular that credits MC Lyte as one of the female MC’s that helped influence their rap career is Missy Elliot and Eve. These two female emcees reflect MC Lyte’s legacy by never straying away from their musical talents and never conforming to the negative aspects of the Hip Hop world. The negative aspects are the misogynistic and sexual images that are so often associated with Hip Hop music.
Aspiring Rapper: J.Cole “I always feel like there are two key ingredients when it comes to following your dreams, one, making something happen that the average person deems difficult. Honestly, if you truly believe it, that’s step one. Step two, is, you know, the hard work that goes along with it.” Jermaine Lamarr Cole, known to many as J. Cole, spoke these words in an interview in 2015 when asked about his determination and work ethic. As a rapper, artists have the ability to express his or her true emotions in their music and the opportunity to influence a generation in a lyrical and unique way.
