The city of Las Vegas has changed rapidly from becoming a beautiful city to a violent place to live in. The city has seemed a rise in homicides as well in the last few years. The strong presences of these gangs are taking innocent lives and making the community a harder place to raise a family in. Many of the gangs in Vegas account for most the drug trade, as well as the staggering homicide rate. The gang problem is not only a problem in Las Vegas, but it is all over the world.
Last but not least, Dallas or 'Dally ' Winston. He is a typical bad boy in the novel, and most young adults or girls like guys like him because he 's wild and very flirtatious. He 's a tuff guy with a lot of pent up anger, but he rarely takes it out on his buddies unless they made him angry. People may like other characters in The Outsiders, but these three boys seemed to be liked the most for their different personalities. Readers love these characters in this book that the author writes about though, even if they aren 't listed above.
In the dramatic short story Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst a boy named Doodle and his brother encounter many obstacles similar to the brothers in the movie Simon Birch even though they come from starkly different family situations. Doodle and Simon were always the underdogs and wanted to be accepted. Doodle wasn’t accepted by his brother whereas Simon’s brother always looked at him like an equal. There brothers teach them many things like baseball and how to walk. Simon and Doodle are always happy and never sad or down.
In the book the Color of Water, Hunter Jordan, James ' stepfather, died of a sudden stroke when he was younger. His mother first married a man named Andrew McBride, that was James’ biological dad, but was only alive to see the moment where his mother, Ruth, re-married to Hunter. When he had died each one of them had a different way of grieving. Ruth rode a blue bicycle Hunter had brought in before he died. For example, James explains how his mother rides the bike around everyday and “... what the world thought of her, a nonchalance in the face of what i perceived to be imminent danger from the blacks and whites who disliked her for being a white person in a black world.”
This would spark gang wars which would tear cities apart. Aside of bootlegging, the mobs committed many other illegal acts including murder, theft, and managing prostitution rings. The Untouchables is a TV series based on 1920’s Chicago and is about the most infamous gangster of all time, Al Capone. Capone was notourious for smooth business deals in making maximum profit as well as keeping the peace, until he was crossed. The Untouchables is quite an interesting series, It’s full of action packed scenes that keep the viewer on the edge of their seat!
Al Capone also gave a rise to gambling, bootlegging, prostitution, drug trafficking, theft, and murder (FBI.). Al Capone would bribe Chicago government and city officials in order to live a wealthy life. Rival gangs in the North of New York attempted many times to take Al Capone’s life which made Al Capone get a car with bullet proof windows. In addition Al Capone kept his home guarded 24/7 ("Top 10 Infamous American Gangsters & Mobsters). As a way of retaliation against the gangs who attempted his life he fought back on Valentine’s Day in 1929.
In addition, gang violence is a consequence of today’s drug trade. As of 2012 the Los Angeles Police Department reported across the Los Angeles County, there have been “a total of 39,435 arrests associated with drugs, and 923 deaths aftermath of gang related violence. The illegal drug market in Los Angeles is one of the most profitable, and most violent, across the country” (LAPD). Drugs and gangs tend to integrate perfectly, gangs use drugs to illegally make money; as a result, it kills the competition and gains street credibility in the process. Moreover, it is in the streets where the brutality takes place, gang wars are started because of greed and power over turf.
Gertrude was a repeated divorcee that was the head of a poor family of seven with a history of being abused by lovers. She dropped out of school when she was only 16 years old in order to pursue a marriage between her and a man name John Baniszewski. John had a volatile temper, often beating his wife for annoying him. Gertrude endured this for 10 years, having 4 children who she gained custody of after her and John’s divorce. Gertrude immediately married a new man by the name of Edward Guthrie.
Milton’s father, Henry was a dreamer who dreamed of having businesses and failed every time. Milton’s mother’s name was fanny. Milton did not get a good education because he moved so much. when Milton was 13 he stopped going to school. He started working as an apprentice to a printer.
Roy Gardner’s Life There are many well known mobsters from the past including, Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, and Roy Gardner. The last Great American Train Robber was the infamous, Roy Gardner. He robbed U.S mail trucks, trains, and escaped prison multiple times. Roy was on the “Most Wanted” list of mobsters in the year of 1921.
The Mafia Imagine a world filled with big men with strong accents, walking around in suits with big cigars in their mouths. These men were loyal to their families but were dangerous if ever crossed. Does one thing wrong and you might as well dig your grave. These men thrived on the terrible economic trouble America was going through. These men are a big part of history and still have an effect on us today.
Positive > Negative In society, there’s conformist and nonconformist. Conformist accept the established practices and beliefs. Nonconformist go against the established practices and beliefs. An example of a conformist is Mark Jennings from the book,“That Was Then, This Is Now” by S.E. Hinton.
