One of the first actual novels that I ever read was Moby Dick by Herman Melville. I received it for my 6th birthday and after opening to the first page I soon commenced on a mystical adventure. I began my endeavor with Ishmael and meeting Queequeg at the Whaler’s Inn. Then eventually meeting Ahab aboard the Pequod, which was a whaling ship led by Captain Ahab. From Ahab’s fervent desire to avenge his lost leg from a previous encounter with the infamous Moby Dick to the untimely death of all of the crew members, besides Ishmael, it was action packed from beginning to end . So when I stumbled over “The Maldive Shark” by Melville on Poetry Out Loud’s website, I knew that it would be another great piece of literature.

The biggest one that I can think of is that it will make you a better public speaker and help build self-confidence. Anything that you do in front of people will sometimes cause people to be nervous or hesitant whether it be playing music, singing, or telling jokes. Reciting poetry will help you overcome these feelings and will stay with you for the rest of your life. Another reason is that it will help you master speaking, pronunciation, and understanding the English language. All of these will help you later in life whether it be in a job interview or a public speech. Successful people are able to articulate well and understand others well on a linguistic and emotional level. The final reason is that poetry helps people realize the underlying reason behind poems. I can relate very well to this because when I first chose this poem I had no clue towards what the meaning of the poem was. But after analyzing it and understanding what all of the vocabulary meant it brought out a whole new dimension and it was a great feeling figuring out what Melville what trying to get across and I feel like this poem will stay with me for the rest of my
