Introduction

This article focuses on the modernization of Shanghai in relation to the chines women. The article will critically examine the modernization process of shanghai and thereafter draw a correlation between the modernization process and the Chinese women. It will look at how the women depict or symbolize the concept of modernization and what specific items depict the entire process. In particular, the study will focus on clothing by the women and link this to modernization process.

Shanghai later occupied the crossroads that were situated right in the middle of the westerners and the Americans. The main aim of the foreigners was to make a fortune from Shanghai. This need resulted into the emergence of a class of entrepreneurs inside the country. The majority of these entrepreneurs were foreigners who had been lured by the investment opportunities in the city. This lead to the development of a two-way scenario whereby the locals were both receiving and giving. The sensitivity given to clothing by the Chinese women only highlights the transformation of their role through the entire modernization process. It is because of this that the study used the Chinese women to categorize the modernization process through dividing the dress code into three, which is the new woman, the modern Chinese woman and lastly the present. All these relate to the modernization phases experienced throughout shanghai. Modernity in this article has been looked upon from the perspective of material transformation in individual’s lifestyle through clothing. This has been extended also and correlated with individuals’ ideas and perceptions which explained the tension that was faced back then between those affiliated to the traditional Chinese culture and those patriotic to the Chinese and western influence. Through understanding the Chinese woman in terms of her clothing, one is able to obtain a clear picture of the relationship between culture and modernization.
