Marfatia (1973) investigated a study on Psychiatric Problems of Children. He founds that lack of parental love, over strictness or over rules and regulation, attitude especially that of father, regular fights between the parents, those parents who are alcoholic, low family income, loneliness and lack of entertaining channels are some of the causes which are responsible for disturbance among the adolescents in various areas such as home, emotional, social and educational adjustment. Thakkar (2003) conducted a study on academic achievement, adjustment and study habits of rural and urban students. A sample size of 200 students of IX class from rural and urban area was selected for the study and the data is collected through simple random sampling. Tools which are used in the study are, Adjustment Inventory by M.N. Palsana; Study Habit Inventory by M.N. Palsana and Academic achievement score on the basis of their two unit tests, semester/terminals and their final examinations. For analysis of data Correlation and t-test technique were used .The study …show more content…
The sample size of the study is 300 boys of class 5th out of which 200 boys were case of parental deprivation. The Tools which were used in the study are: (1) Raven’s Coloured Progressive Matrices; Socio-economic Scale Questionnaire by SD Kapoor et al. (2) Children Concept Scale by S.P. Ahluwalia. (3) Four Achievement Tests (Math, Science, Language and Social Studies) constructed by the researcher. The important findings of the study were: (1) there is significant difference between the achievement of parentally deprived and other children. (2) The study finds that parentally deprived children were underachievers while others were average in achievement. (3) In personality traits maternally deprived and paternally deprived children were significantly
The child born to poverty will be less likely to have a bicycle, skateboard, football club membership, swimming lessons etc. This lack of opportunity, coupled with a less nutritionally dense diet will have a detrimental effect on bone and muscle growth and thus restrict development in these areas. *Social and emotional Development the reduced invites, abilities and self-esteem experienced by a child from a family with no financial security will create reduced opportunities for development in these areas. Every time a child is not invited to a party, sports event or social event it will further knock their confidence and self-esteem.
However, wealthier parents more likely to involved in their kid live to teach them the way to talk to others, help them have the change to learn and participate in different activities and show them how they can involve in their environment. For this reason, students with low-income or middle classes usually didn't have the time to interact, communicate and connect with their parents. As a result, if the students have any stressful toward their grade and schools and they
Due to the early education Jeannette received early on, she was more motivated to perform well in school and this helped her leave the dysfunction. In an article by Kathleen Kieran and Fiona Mensah, they write, “Our findings show that parenting is a key mediator of poverty and disadvantage in relation to children’s achievement in their first year at school” (Kieran 328). Most cases of dysfunction in the household show lower education statistics, but if parents focused on their children in the early stages of life then the dysfunction would have less of an effect on them later in life. Szente mentions this in her article and says, “the early childhood years are viewed to be crucial in the healthy development of our own belief systems which are strongly influenced by our early interactions with adults” (450). Adults are what children look up to and “many students need guidance and modeling from teachers as well as constant feedback” (Szente 451).
During the beginning of modern Europe, there were conflicting views on the proper way to view children. Previously in history, the infant mortality rate was very high, so kids were treated more like adults and were often neglected because odds were they would die. There was a resounding view that kids should be treated harshly in order to become strong. Then in the seventeenth century, the idea of being tender and gentle to your kids was introduced. The way in children were brought up was influenced by assumptions made on both old and new schools of thought.
Mental Health has been a hot topic for many years. There have been many programs and laws put into place so that the mentally ill can get the care and treatment they need to live independently and maintain freedom in their communities. Although deinstitutionalization has occurred, the mentally ill are still being ‘institutionalized’ in our local jails, state and federal prisons. Why is this still happening if treatment and community based mental health care programs for those who suffer from mental illness are in place? Will history repeat itself; or are prisons and jails the new homes for those with mental illness in the United States?
This also inhibits their success on standardized tests and college readiness simply because they might not have the time to practice concepts or ask questions to understand testing material. Another key issue with economically disadvantaged students is the lack of parental support and guidance on the significance of studying at home. Many of the parents of economically disadvantaged kids did not obtain a higher level of education, which may impact their ability to help their kids, and worse, their ability to pass on the motivation needed for their kids to succeed in school. In addition, they could also be
As centers have closed in communities around the country, it is difficult for some to find transportation to facilities on the other end of their city or county. And long waits to get into a clinic causes some to forget about appointments or have enough time to convince themselves that they can handle their problem on their own. The U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health recognized that mental health is plagued by disparities in availability and access more than any other field of medicine. Although the disparities are often seen in the terms of race, age, and gender, more recently, it has been concluded that these disparities are also driven by social, environmental, and economic factors.
Name: Chengwen Ren SID: 450537529 Adversity of childhood experiences can influence adulthood negatively, the child abuse is one of the main factors, it can even result from neglect. The previous research found that, the child abuse can strongly affect the individual’s adulthood by physical and mental health issues which can last a long period of time (LaBier, 2013). So, here’s a question: How to avoid the child abuse happen to the children? This article will base on LaBier’s(2014) blog article in the website Psychology Today to discuss the explanation and avoidance of the adversity of childhood experiences.
Social inequality affects children at a young age and has a lasting impact; there was a particular statistic that lower income parents correlate with high rates of socio-emotional difficulties in children, due to low interactions with children. Inequality begins to impost society early on and life and progress throughout an individuals
Children and adults alike sometimes have emotional problems with their moods, sometimes becoming sad or depressed. Depression is characterised by certain symptoms to be diagnosed by a professional such as: persistent low mood, feeling overwhelming sadness, disturbed sleep, and loss of appetite, concentration and memory issues and not being able to enjoy normal pleasing activities. School children can show signs with lack of sleep, weight loss and becoming withdrawn. They may have trouble concentrating and give up on tasks easily and may have a low sense of sense worth.
The family is well educated which provides better education to the children (Guryan, Hurst & Kearney, 2008). Both parents style of parenting is very authoritative as both parents, especially Mrs. Yau displays a high degree of nurturance In the family, both parents are noted to be in high SES as they both are well respected doctors and have a respectable background in the family history. Studies showed that high SES families can afford their children services, toys and goods, family outings and social connections which could benefit to the child, whereas low SES families could have lack of access to similar resources (Bradley and Crowyn, 2002). A study by DeGarmo and colleagues (1999) also found that income, education and occupation were associated with better parenting, which positively affected school achievement with skill-building activities and behavior in school. This can explain how Alexander has good behavior in class.
Child Neglect- the negligent treatment or maltreatment of a child by a parent or by a caretaker under circumstances indicating harm or threatened harm to the child’s health or welfare. Child neglect is something different than actual abuse although some may argue it is some form of abuse, reported cases of neglect outnumbered those of physical abuse. There is that very fine line between actual neglect and poor parenting; it covers a wide range of activities, and there is no single set of factors established that clearly divides neglect and poor parenting if child neglect is detected everything must be viewed with caution. Parent that neglect their children hold a certain set of characteristics they have an inability to
Why do the people of today still associate stigma, shame and blame with mental health issues? Mental health issues are extremely and widely misunderstood. Despite the fact one in four people are likely to experience some kind of mental health problem a year in the United Kingdom. “Mental health is a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being and it affects how we feel, think and act. It also helps to determine how we handle situations such as stress, how we relate to others and how we make decisions.
Adeninyi (2011) as cited by Ebele and Olofu (2016) mentioned that good study habits allow students to study independently at home and aspire for higher educational career. The formation of good study habits in secondary school level further serves as the basis for students’ performance in external examinations such as West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NECO) and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). On the contrary, bad study habits are negative or non-productive study habits which are undesirable and counter-productive to students’ academic performance John (2010) as cited by Ebele and Olofu (2017). When developed and utilized by students at all levels, they tend to impede academic progress and performance of the users. Due to the peculiarity and uniqueness of individual student, what may be considered as bad study habits to student “A”, may seem to be very productive and efficient for student “B”.
Several studies have been done to identify problems that affects student’s academic performance. The students’ academic performance depends on a number of socio-economic factors like students’ presence of trained teacher in school, teacher-student ratio, attendance in the class, sex of the student, family income, mother’s and father’s education, , and distance of schools (Amitava Raychaudhuri,
