“If you really want to hear about it I guess I’ll start with what I did to get into this Hell-Hole. You probably should already know cause you got access to those prison files or some crap like that. But trust me I won’t tell anybody, I’m not phony like that,” I said. “Yes Mr. Caulfield, I do know how you got into this ‘Hell-Hole,’ but I want to hear it from you. What’s your side of the story,” The psychologist said. “See Doc, I would tell you how I paved my way into this gorgeously vile state penitentiary. But first, I need you to call me Holden, and I want to hear how you got in. Let’s talk about you,” I bargained. I didn’t really care how the doc got here. I really didn’t. But I wasn’t in the mood to talk about my screw ups. I just got into …show more content…
You wanted my side of the story, I’m just giving you background,” I explained. Let me tell you, I’ve been to lots of Docs over the years, and they are all so impatient. They ask you a question and they need you to answer just that and they want your answer right then. They don’t like extra info. Just what they ask you. “So, I was looking at these two kids, and you could tell that they were just starving. So, I asked them where their parents were. They said that they ‘never really had any,’ and that killed me. I promised them I would go to the store and get them some food and a blanket or something. I just hate seeing kids go down the wrong path. I sort of saw myself as a catcher in the rye to them,” I …show more content…
So, you really care about kids, do you want to have some one day?” she asked. “Yeah, I do. So, I go to the store to get these kids some ‘supplies,’ the only issue is I didn’t necessarily have any money. Yeah, I was gonna steal a couple things but it really isn’t that bad, I mean I had a good reason. But, lucky me I got caught and what made it worse was that I punched the cop that had caught me, square in the face. I was just so embarrassed of my petty little crime that I didn’t know how to act when he caught me,” I recalled. “So that’s how you got here Holden, you stole some supplies for homeless kids?” She questioned. “Well that and after the judge had made his decision to send me here for six months, he freaking bowed, and for that I called him a cocky son of a bitch. That comment bought me another 20 days but it was really worth it. I mean I’m gonna be here anyway. What’s a few extra days?” I exclaimed. “Well Holden, I have to ask you, do see why what you did was wrong?” She asked. “Yeah I do Doc I get it. I’m supposed to be a ‘respectable member of society’ and crap like that. I’m supposed to contribute to the growth of society and yada yada yada,” I
And I didn’t like her much. Nobody did. You had to feel sort of sorry for her, in a way” (). This demonstrates Holden’s failure to understand people and the judgemental thoughts he has. He often has these judgemental thoughts to distance himself from others.
“Thank you.” The words were dragged from the blond with effort, “You will spend the rest of your life in prison. The red lyrium poisoning treatments is for the safety of everyone else, so it doesn’t spread.” “Do you ever wonder why I was so compliant?” “No.”
It’s been 8 long months since I last saw your darling face. I long to hold you close in my arms one more time. Sadly my dear, that may be the last time I ever embrace you. You see things here in the God-Forbidden trenches are so grotesque that men are dying left and right. They have even resorted to burying them in the walls, making an awful stench.
This repeated action of Holden’s clearly shows his desire to connect with the people he misses and cares about the most, but it also reveals that something is restraining him from reaching out to them for companionship, as his unreliable excuses fail to shield Holden’s true feelings. Holden’s fruitless consideration and excuses plainly display his hand held out for connection, but also the fact that something is pulling him back
POV: SteveI never seen Sodapop look so...gloomy. He was always the happier one of the bunch, but ever since our gang has fallen...with deaths. First it was Johnny and Dally, then Darry and Ponyboy. His own brothers. Two-Bit was off somewhere with his children.
When this happens Holden narrates: "Only, I didn't. I sat down for a
Holden is a moral character who has been influenced by society’s expectations
At first, Holden takes Mr. Spencer's advice as unfair and bias saying, " Game, my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are. " With the intent to benefit Holden, Mr. Spencer harshly responds to Holden’s comment making him feel hurt, and reflect on Mr. Spencer’s words " He said it pretty tough, too, for him."
As a result of this encounter, Holden becomes increasingly more nervous and overwhelmed as he walks down Fifth Avenue the next day, these feelings become so hard to cope with that everytime Holden steps off the sidewalk curb, he “[has] this feeling that [he will] never get to the other side of the street” (217). This example is perhaps the most prominent one because it proves that even Mr. Antolini, someone Holden has known for a long time, thought to be very real and caring, puts up a nicer persona for his own selfish purposes, making advances on
Holden had told his sister Phoebe that he had gotten the axe and she asked why he had done it. He answered with “It was full of phonies. And mean guys. You never saw so many mean guys in your life.
Amid the activities of normal day society, the collisions and situations conferred has fabricated the personalities and thought process of each individual human being, and thus the encounters that arbitrarily shaped today’s society and with that represents the physical embodiment of the discrete people. How the effects entwined with everyday lives can be very shocking to even the most adventurous or exploration of people. Holden’s story is nowhere near the exception of these set base of rules of environments and drastic situations changing him as a character. Take past occurrences that helped contrive Holden as a person as he is now, “[I had] old Allie’s baseball mitt. I happened to have it with me, in my suitcase, so I got it out
Oscar Wilde said : “Be yourself, everybody else is already taken.” In his book, The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger expresses this quote through the adolescent life of Holden Caulfield. The novel begins with the narrator being kicked out of his private high school for failing all of his classes but one. Leaving campus, he heads to New York City; which ironically is the city of dreams. J.D. Salinger uses symbolism in the form of a hat to represent the notion of individuality.
Sometimes I consider running away from here” I don’t know if it was the adrenaline I was feeling but I said, “Let's do it, let's get out of here. They only want us to be people we are not, they want us to pretend we are happy and willing to change our identity”. Holden smiled at me and told me to be realistic, I liked it when people didn't sugar coat anything for me. We laughed, and then were created this insane plan to leave this physiological facility.
"You are kidding! " The girl said angrily, studying him with a long gaze. "I don’t." He answered. "I can show you my mini rewards that I always carry with me."
Holden says, “I’m not kidding, the hotel was lousy with perverts. I was probably the only normal bastard in the whole place- and that isn’t saying much. [...] The trouble was, that kind of junk is sort of fascinating to watch, even if you don’t want it to be” (62). The couple
