“In listening to the silence of the mountains, I heard at last my own heart’s words and I found my voice.” This quote was on a light blue rocker that sat on the porch of the house where I was staying in Montreat, North Carolina and is representative of my experience while attending my first youth conference.
Montreat is a mountain retreat center nestled between the bucolic mountains of western North Carolina. Every year, my youth group makes the pilgrimage down south to attend the Montreat Youth Conference. It is a 12 hour van drive with 15 loud teenagers, in July, traveling through traffic, humidity, rain, sun and clouds.
While attending a small group meeting, I began to feel more confident and express myself without concern of judgement for my comments or questions. Before I knew it, I was energizing my group. I came to realize I had been living my life trying to fit in when I was meant to lead. I had been quiet when I was meant to be heard.

It was a two year commitment to develop the concepts, themes and activities of the conference. It was my hope that I could provide the same “a ha” moment I had experienced.
By working with a team comprised of people from other parts of the country and varying in age and life experience, I continued to learn and grow and learned that I could teach those more educated and older than
I was determined to learn how to play video games, I showed them I can climb to the very top of the tree, and I developed a passion for sports. And now a few years later being apart of SkillsUsa has boost my confidence level. I also believe that becoming Regional President can give me that push to be a better me and I can inspire others to become better being themselves. Being commitment to SkillsUSA for the past 2 years has been one of the greatest experiences I've had during my high school years.
I always put my mind to a goal and do my best to achieve it, and I have great moral support from many people. I have learned so much on working with people of different ethnicity, cultures, as well as with special needs students who I assist and teach and it 's such an incredible opportunity to be part of their lives. But most of all my biggest achievement is being devoted and dedicated to those things I love the most. Especially now I would love to have an accomplishment of being part of the Capital One
By volunteering at my local church and helping with local service projects, I have realized the commitment and perseverance it takes to lead by example. At my local church I continue to help with the organization of my youth group. After speaking at church staff meetings for several months we made it our goal to improve the youth group by ensuring that children and teens of all ages were included and had an opportunity to participate. I was able to create a system where teens who attended high school were paired with a middle school individual of the church. This provided a sense of inclusiveness and made the youth group more enjoyable for everyone.
I have helped on many service projects with my youth group and through Boy Scouts. Tutoring and executing my Eagle Scout project were both jobs that put me into a leadership position. Lego Robotics trained me in team building skills and inspired me to learn more about computers. Building my first computer and planning my Eagle Scout project taught me the importance of preparation to create something exceptional that will last.
I learned to not be afraid to find resources that can help me become successful. For example, when I am stuck on a math assignment in class, I will ask tutors or a teachers for help. Upward Bound has provided me with so many college opportunities.
My experience as a student senator has developed my innate leadership and challenged me to grow. It has inspired me to continue to devote my time to represent the underrepresented. I have learned
I learned how to adapt to the individual needs of students to provide them the best education. Like students with a communication disorder, many of my students would shy away from activities or tasks because of obstacles. Through these experiences, I watched my students gain the confidence to participate in activities and excel in academics to become successful individuals. As a future Speech Language Pathologist, many qualities that I possess can be improved by furthering my education.
I am able to relate to people and work hard to make the experience I am participating in rewarding for all individuals involved. Throughout my educational path, I have observed and participated in a variety of different areas involving caring for others. Each opportunity was unique and impacted me in different ways, making me the person I am today. Volunteering at a summer camp with children with muscular dystrophy taught me the importance of communicating with others and the value of patience. Interacting with patients in a hospital setting gave me the opportunity to distract patients and make their stay at the hospital more tolerable.
For instance, I found myself continually working on 3-D modeling and moviemaking projects for my high school, as well as for companies that my school was partnered with. However, I realized that if I wanted to create a community where students continue and expound upon the projects that I started, I would have to teach them. I taught incoming high schoolers in a classroom environment as a part of a transition program from middle to high school. To further my passion of teaching, I worked as a 10th Chemistry Teacher’s Assistant tutoring kids on academic material as well as preparing them for state-wide science competitions. I strongly believe that the initiative that I have taken, to learn and give back to enthusiastic students, will help me succeed in taking on the responsibility to lead the bright minds of
One of the most significant experiences I have had in recent years was when I taught myself to ride a unicycle. It was something I had wanted to learn for a long time, and I was excited to get started. I was a little concerned that it might prove too difficult to learn a new physical activity of this nature as an adult. In the end it was more challenging than I imagined, but it was also more rewarding that I ever could have hoped. Learning to ride a unicycle taught me, balance and coordination, but more importantly, it taught me to overcome obstacles, and most importantly it changed the way I approach goals.
This helped me a lot while I was involved in working with the children in the special needs school. Working within this environment has helped me gain a lot of confidence in myself this is because, it has proved to me that I can
One of the biggest impacts that became of me occurred at my interview with one of the bosses at Kiz Studios. When I emailed him he was skeptical at first however decided to give me a chance. I proceeded to the place and he showed me around. I stood in total awe, I never thought I would be standing in a position close as this. After were done checking the place he sat me down trying to figure out how much knowledge I grasped and asked to see my work.
Therefore, I learned a lot from my experience and I feel confident that I will be able to apply my skills to my personal life, academic journey and professional
I’ve known since a young age that computers hold a special sway over me- even as a child perched on my uncle’s lap, I loved watching him type programs on his boxy computer with half the memory space as the computer I program on now. The most mesmerizing aspect of computers, to me, was the way their games brought people in and how much everyone loved their stories and characters. It’s been my goal ever since I learned that, yes, people make those games, to become a software developer capable of inventing worlds within a disk. The issue with making content everyone loves, of course, is figuring out what everyone wants and sometimes even changing it. This is probably the biggest struggle I 've seen my classmates face, we 've become such a fact and skill-oriented generation that we 've overlooked being able to talk to people.
I had people who looked up to me. It meant so much to me that some of my peers saw me as an inspiration. I distinguished myself the most
