Character Analysis of Montresor Imagine getting buried alive! That’s how the vengeful character of this story gets revenge. Edgar Allen Poe wrote many incredible stories, this is a character analysis of the protagonist in the short story “The Cask of Amontillado.” Written by Edgar Allen Poe, in “The Cask of Amontillado,” the manipulative and vengeful trait of Montresor impacts the story heavily. Montresor is exquisite at manipulating others. For example, line 5 states “I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts.” said Montresor. To better explain, this line shows how Montresor tempts Fortunato to his vault. Furthermore, in line 24, he states “there were no attendants at home… I had told them that I should not return until the morning, and had given them explicit orders not to stir from the house,” this reveals how Montresor used “reverse psychology” to make sure there was no one at his palazzo. In addition, he supposes that Fortunato is engaged in something, and he is on his way to Luchresi for connoisseur services. This makes …show more content…
For instance, Montresor states at the beginning of the story, “I had borne as I best could, but when he ventures upon insult, I vowed revenge.” To better explain, if Montresor wasn’t vengeful the story would have been different and wouldn’t have happened. Furthermore, in line 47, Montresor tells Fortunato his family coat of arms shows a golden foot smashing a snake, but the snake is biting the heel of the offending foot, this image symbolically shows that someone may overpower a Montresor but the Montresors always strike back harder. In addition, he also tells Fortunato the motto in line 49 which expresses “No one attacks me with Impunity,” this indicates that Montresor’s victims are people who wronged him. This is significant because this displays that Montresor is vengeful and if he isn’t vengeful then the story would have been very
At the beginning of the story the narrator chooses the setting of Carnival. When one thinks of the carnival, the thought of joyful people, celebration and social interaction comes to mind. No one would have thought that that was the precise moment for Montresor to take revenge. The name of Fortunato itself is ironic, because the name of Fortunato means fortune in Italy. When Montresor reveals the audience that he “had fettered [Fortunato] to the granite”, the scene sends chills throughout the reader’s body (Poe 471).
“The thousands injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge.” (“Cask” 372). Montresor means that he has dealt with all of Fortunato’s wrong doings, but when he insulted him he had enough. After he has had enough, he is going to chain Fortunato and leave him to die . Likewise in “Hop-Frog” Hop-Frog also has a revengeful trait.
This foreshadows Montresor will be successful and he will bury Fortunato alive. Consequently, Poe not only uses foreshadowing but also irony to reveal the theme of revenge can lead man to unexplainable acts of
He wants to seek justice for how Fortunato has wronged him. He maintains this goal as he wants to “not only punish but punish with impunity” (Poe, 1). From Montresor’s point of view, he must enforce revenge on Fortunato, as it is what he believes is right. Ensuring that he wants to “punish with impunity” indicates his relentless pursuit of vengeance and how he must ensure that he faces no consequences for his actions. This way, Montresor reveals his underlying arrogance and belief in his superiority.
To explain, Montresor was insulted by Fortunato, the resolution to this conflict should have been as simple as confronting Fortunato with his hurt feelings. Instead, Montresor decides “[he] would be avenged” (Poe 543). Because of the dramatic way Montresor decides to resolve the conflict between himself and his friend, his character is shifted towards an unruly one. Montresor has no regards for those around him, he has no insight to anyone but himself. As a result of the way he chooses to resolve conflicts, he allows the conflicts to take control of his every action.
Due to the fact that Montresor is determined he makes Fortunato have some trust in him which allows his plan to
Montressor gains Fortunato's trust by constantly poking at him about his safety. "We will go back; your health is precious, " shows how Montressor pretends to care for him to gain his trust. Fortunato is an easily fooled person which is why he had no second thoughts when Montressor said there was a pipe of Amontillado in the catacombs. His trust
In the quote above we can see Montresour revealing a trowel/mason from under his cloak. This action from Montressour creates an ominous mood by randomly having a trowel in his cloak leaving the reader with a scene of suspicion and something bad yet to come. Next, we see him putting the trowel back into his cloak adding to the mood and suspicion. This gives the reader a hint that this will come back later in the story. Finally, we see him offering his arm trying to comfort him again to continue on towards the amontillado giving the reader a sense of wonder on why Fortunato saw this and does nothing.
However, when he made a slight noise, the old man quickly woke up. Showing that the old man had a good sense of hearing and it also showed that the narrator didn't take concern about this before approaching him. If the narrator knew that the old man was barely sleeping and that he had a good sense of hearing, he wouldn't make that kind of careless mistake. In the "Cask of Amontillado," Montresor knew all of the weaknesses of Fortunato and knew every single thing in the vaults before even approaching Fortunato. It showed how much Montresor was serious about the plan and how much work he put into
For years he has thought only of finally being able to get rid of Fortunato and his denigrate remarks. Baraban V. Elena writes in his analysis that “This is a story of a man who committed a horrible crime half a century ago.” (Elena 1). This leads people to believe even after committing the crime, Montresor was still so keen on doing it properly that the authorities couldn't piece anything together and solve the case. In another scholarly quote by Leonard W. Engel that reads “Montresor the narrator, it will be remembered unlike the narrower is in other tales who have murdered their victims and then tried to conceal their bodies, does successfully conceal his crime.”
Montresor is a grudge holder. In the beginning, Montresor, explains why he is angry with Fortunato, but didn’t come into detail of what he did to him. Evidently, Fortunato injured and insulted Montresor, who says that he has endured peacefully as Fortunato repeatedly offended him thousands of time. Fifty year ago, Fortunato use to deny what Montresor would say about, who he was or what he had done, as if it was untrue. Montresor would argue back and forth with him explaining that it was true.
In this essay I will explain how Montresor’s execution of Fortunato was carried out like an expert. I will list examples of how Montresor manipulated Fortunato, and how he enjoys his revenge. In this story Montresor, the murderer, used reverse psychology, and utilized cunning precondition to fulfill his scheme. He also used clever paronomasia to deceive Fortunato. Montresor first manipulated Fortunato when he met him at the carnival.
The description also shows how twisted and evil Montresor is as he enjoyed listening to the struggles of Fortunato. All these examples show how the author uses description to show the mood of horror and
Montresor has held a grudge against Fortunato for probably quite some time now. In the beginning of the story Montresor says, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne the best I could; but when he ventured upon insult; I vowed revenge”. Montresor wants revenge on Fortunato for what he may or may not have done. He uses foreshadowing in the very first sentence to make the readers mysteriously intrigued. Montresor explains to us that he vows revenge against Fortunato no matter what he has to do.
he!” said Fortunato thinking all of this was a joke (Poe 10). But really it was not a joke, and Montresor was planning to kill Fortunato deep inside the eerie catacombs. This foreshadowing that occurs throughout the story creates the suspense that keeps the reader on
